Until this video, because of her body language i thought my dog was overly excited but this shows me that shes nervous and anxious. She stops when she see's car's because i stop with her and tell her no and act anxious so she copies. I stop and panic when other dogs are around, she does the same. Makes so much sense now!

Oh my gosh, my dog has been impossible to walk and impossible to have in the house. He’s always on alert and is constantly barking at his reflection trashcans, anything bigger than him etc. This past week and a half i have been using the techniques from this video. And i have seen massive improvements. Today is the first time i took him on a walk where he wasn’t tugging pulling and barking the whole time. Thank you so much for your videos I can not believe the improvement I’ve seen in just a week.

Hi Nigel, very clear and helpful video as ever. It really helped me to identify my dog as a hard line aggressive freezer when encountering other dogs......she will also try to dominate other dogs and invade their space if they meet closely which can rapidly turn into aggression as well. She has made massive progress in other areas of perceived threat mainly due to us using the techniques in your book and videos but we have hit a real road block with her around other dogs. Does the course cover specific techniques to get her to cope without resorting to the aggressive freeze and will it help us to help her to meet other dogs without her feeling the need to dominate and be aggressive?

There she is...my fearful dog displays an assertive freeze with barking...unfortunately she is doing this every time she sees a stranger and she is an intimidating 85 pounds. I have been researching local trainers (Delaware, US) and breed specific trainers (Dogo Argentino) and have been appalled at some of the suggestions I have received. Your calm, confidence-building approach is exactly what I have been seeking!

This is helpful! Our dog does the aggressive "freeze" which really looks like she wants to just go at the other dog and it's NOT fun. She's also done the attack part, sadly, though the first few times she got into it with other dogs, I don't think she was the one who "started it". So I think she became reactive after a few bad experiences with other dogs and now reacts badly to all of them.

Hello! Very helpful video. We had thought my dog lunged, barks and tried to bite people was because he thought he needed to take on the protecting family role. Our other dog who basically provided safety for us had died. So my dog thinks that he must take that role. Or so we thought. It started as we took him on a hike. He lunged at a person. It's only at other people who come near us, walk by us, or if we walk by them. We have tried avoiding humans but he still barks at them. Do you have ANY idea how we can train him not to lunge and bark at humans other than family and friends he knows?

Hello Nigel. Sometimes my dog raises its hind leg when meeting another dog, as if she wanted to pee on the other dog that is sniffing her, but never does that. I suspect it's an instance of submissive behaviour without showing her tummy, I mean without her going belly up. Have you ever seen such behaviour before?

Keep the dog's world small and introduce them very slowly whilst showing you will take care of them at each step.

Hi! Could you please help us!🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🐶 My puppy turned 4 months old today (male). He never showed any aggression neither to us nor to dogs. Today I was teaching him “leave it”. Everything went great until I started using boiled chicken head.🐔And boiled chicken meat was as a treat. He got crazy, when I told him to leave it, grin👹, started to jump on my legs, trying to bite me. My husband came to help, took the puppy up in his arms. Then the puppy bit his cheek.😵 My husband hold him, trying to settle him down. As I understand this happened because he didn’t get this chicken head in the end. (he never tried it before as well). Right?🤔 We never used negative reinforcement for him, never beat him of course. Please tell us, what should we do in such situations? Should I keep using this kind of food for “leave it”, to provoke him? Or stop using it? How to behave if he will get crazy like this again? Thank you in advance for any advice 🙏🏻😊❤️

Hi, a sentence of advice won't suffice. You need to know why he did this, his language, the rules around food, what to do if a dog's state heightens e.g do not pick them up near your face. Why do dogs get aggressive with strangers at the door, but run away from more obvious threats?

Each dog perceives different things threatening. There is not always that much logic to their decisions and perceptions. i.e some dogs are scared of paper bags or walking on different types of floors.

@@nigelreed Insecure is fear, right? When earning FEAR FREE certification they say there are now “4 F’s” of stress response in pets. Vet techs 20 years ago were taught in school, it was the old “fight or flight, then “freeze” was added. These days those at the top have added a fourth recognized behavior: “fidget” like pacing tail tucked, lifting one paw (and calming signals: yawning or licking lips etc).

I have also heard flirt is a 4th F (defence response) as the dog is trying to pacify the situation with friendliness. Add fidget to the list then there would be 5 F's. For me people are looking for words that begin with F. And so leave out other reactions that do not start with F. Yawning and licking lips demonstrates stress. However is it used to alert another dog and be submissive (i.e use a defence response) or is it a reaction to feeling stressed... Dogs lick lips and yawn when fireworks are happening so in that context it is not to be submissive (showing a defence response) to the fireworks. If the dog is staying where they are and fidgeting, they are still freezing. They are feeling insecure but not enough to run off. I think of it in human terms. If you told someone to go away. That would be assertive freeze. If you went over that i.e (invade space, tell them to **** off) it would be aggressive freeze. If you apologised, that would be submissive freeze. If you put your head down and looked stressed I would look at that as submissive too. It's all down to interpretation of course. Interesting topic though!

Hi there, To have resources and needs met is fundamental to for a dog to stay alive. So therefore EVERY dog has to question who makes the decisions & who provides for whom. Without these questions they would cease to live. By ignoring status you are in turn disregarding the different types of attachments that form with each dog and an owner. What about dogs that protect one owner but not the other? What about dogs that pull on the lead with one owner but not the other? What about dogs that try and get food from one owner but not the other? How can this behaviour be anything but a dog assuming they have/ or need to take, control in those areas with that individual? And so need to be taught by that individual. Which reflects the status of that individual. If it were just a matter of teaching the dog and not status then a trainer would be able to train a dog for a client and the behaviour would always be the same for that person. But this isn't the case. It's how the dog sees the individual in terms of authority, provider, protector, decision maker. Dogs are not socialists! Please explain those behaviours without referring to a book - which I have already read BTW. If you are open minded I suggest reading the Demon Haunted world: Science as a candle in the dark by Carl Sagan. Once you understand what constitutes science you will see holes in the author's reasoning (not science) everywhere. If you have an aggressive dog, it's better to euthanize it. Do not surrender it to a shelter becasue then the dog can end up being adopted by an unsuspecting family and the dog can harm a child.

Rescue centres generally do not give dogs to families with children. This is especially the case with aggressive dogs.

@@nigelreed I wish that was true but keep in mind that most shelters are run by animal rights advocates who are desperate to place unwanted dogs with families.

I should hope ALL shelters are run by people who advocate for animal rights. If shelters rehome a dog that hurts a child then the institution would be investigated and potentially sued, very quickly and the dog would be put down. My experience is the shelter owners are very conscientious of what happens to the dog and people.

Many tragedies had happened to unsuspecting people that in good faith adopted a dog from a shelter, believing that they were doing a good deed by saving a living being. But then that dog injured or killed a family member. Some shelters even closed their doors after that. (And no lawsuit is going to bring your child back) There are many videos of real news stories about rescued dog attacks here on youtube. The Pit Bull Victim Awareness channel is a good place to start.
