So excited to see that you'll be touching on sighthounds! :D I lure course with my Borzoi here on the East coast, and it's so much fun. My boy LIVES to chase that lure. Also, if you ever want to do a piece on Silken Windhounds (they look like small Borzoi), there are tons of them in California!
@javierrojo55966 жыл бұрын
is the Borzoi better than the greyhound?
@CuSidhe6 жыл бұрын
The Borzoi and the Greyhound are very similar in many ways, but bred for different purposes...so it really depends on what context you're referring to. I've never personally coursed with a Greyhound, so I am unfamiliar with how they would compare. :)
@dougperry93146 жыл бұрын
@@javierrojo5596 Generally Greyhounds are faster as they run 60 miles an hour on US racetracks and Russian Borzois run only 40 mph but Borzois aren't really exercised as well in the USA and West in general because their owners tend to be more interested in show than coursing and fitness. Borzois have the capability of running over 60 mph but most breeders of Borzois are into their coat(fur) than sporting. Truthfully, it's the training the hound get that determines the coursing ability of the dogs. Azawakhs owned by Berbers were measured at 55 mph and Magyar Agars are comparable to speed as Greyhounds and Azwakhs. Greyhounds slow down to 40-45 mph at the race end due to the curves in oval racing but they hit 60 mph

What do you want to know? Ive hunted small game with my grandfather using roodogs (staghounds in the usa) since childhood. I have a great working knowledge of the cross breeds used in a running dog. In Melbourne australia we have one of the most professional greyhound racing industrys and the fastest greyhounds in the world. I used to work at a 130 dog racing greyhound kennel. So fire away, sighthounds have been a huge part of my life Adam

You can get it easy. Since they are ancient type dog. Just like free to run dogs
@rbeezy9836 жыл бұрын
The reason many greyhounds don't course is that they're too fast and more prone to injurys from the course turns that are harder on them than smaller or slower breeds. We course with our whippets most weekends on the east coast for the past few years and rarely see greys. But its so fun and you really do get to see how the different breeds run. Glad you covered this!

The Azawakh is a sighthound livestock guardian breed of dog from West Africa. It is also used as a hunting dog, though relegated to a secondary function due to the lack of game in the region. With ancient origins, it is raised throughout the Sahelian zone of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. This region includes the Azawagh Valley for which the breed is named. While commonly associated with the nomadic Tuareg people, they are also bred and owned by other ethnic groups such as the Peulh, Bella, and Hausa. The Azawakah is more related to the Sloughi than it is to the Saluki.[1]

In Spain we have the spanish galgo (very, very similar to the english greyhounds, just a bit less muscular) that is still used for coursing and hunting wild rabbits. Another sighthoud breed still in use is the Ibizan hound and it's different regional varieties. They're normally used to hunt rabbits and small game, but I've heard of people using them to hunt hogs

My male borzoi is 35" at the shoulder, and within standard. Does well showing, coursing, and works in other aspects as well. Temperament and racing titles, working on show titles now that his coat is in as a mature male - they typically develop slowly. The wolves they still hunt in some countries are around 100-140# typically. You run a brace, typically two bitches and a dog is what I've seen. They've been around since the Bronze Age according to archeological finds. They weren't exactly what they are now, but they were around. Most people just know about once they were refined around 1700's and the first breed standard was developed at that time.

Most lurchers don't contain bull breeds but are greyhound or whippet or saluki x terrier and border collie. The Saluki doesn't come from Morocco but from Iran/Irak/Saoudi Arabia/Libanon. The sighthound from Morocco is called Sloughi and it's a different breed

The Irish Wolfhound (Irish: Cú Faoil, Irish pronunciation: [ˈkuː ˈfˠiːlʲ]) is a breed of domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), specifically a very large sighthound from Ireland. The name originates from its purpose-wolf hunting with dogs-rather than from its appearance. Originally developed from war hounds to one used for hunting and guarding, Irish Wolfhounds can be an imposing sight due to their formidable size.

The Illini and Saluki are a pair of passenger trains operated by Amtrak between Chicago and Carbondale, Illinois. They are part of Amtrak's Illinois Service and are primarily funded by the state of Illinois. Additional service over the route is provided by the long-distance City of New Orleans. The Illini has operated since 1973; a previous version operated in 1971-1972 between Chicago and Champaign. The Saluki debuted in 2006.

I LOVE sighthounds. I think my favorites are Spanish Galgos (which is a greyhound that is slightly smaller and is bred for endurance) and Ibizan hounds. Unfortunately, I can’t have one because my fence isn’t high enough and I have heard that some of their prey drives are so strong they may chase small dogs. I have a jack Russell cross who would love the sport. I think I’m gonna buy a pulley system for her birthday

I have a mixed-breed sight hound with whom I used to do freestyle disc. He was so good at vaulting that he'd take a squirrel off the top of our six-foot fence. I had to raise it to seven and a half after he ended up in the neighbors' yard a couple of times. I'd love to get him into lure coursing now that we're getting too old for vaulting.

Gotta do a video on Greyhounds! The ultimate Sighthound in my opinion, but I'm a little biased as I work with them and own one myself! Just make sure you find someone that's not an anti when it comes to racing because you'll be told a load of lies and nonsense. Ideally get in contact with a trainer or someone who has retired dog's.
