Matt, I used a spare tire to carry my battery that I had to use from my 54 ford when I used to gig on the sound side of Pensacola Beach back in 1961. We also ued the battery out of my car to illuminate the light. My best friend Walter Baker he still lives in P’cola. I’m 78 and live in Myrtle Beach SC. I lived in GulfBreeze and I miss the place and would move back in a heartbeat if my grandkids didn live in SCand NC

Can I give you a lil hint Matt??? Get you a wash tub...#2 or #3 find a tire inter tub, stretch it over the bottom of the tub.....air it up and tie some paracord to the handle of the tub and the other end around you waist. You can then put your cooler, battery, and anything else you need in the tub and just pull it along behind you. Lots easier! I'm guessing now a days finding a big pool noddle would work as well.

Worst & hardest part judging size of the flounder before u gig it guess make sure there bigger than legal size by least a inch or two we've got lots of flounder here in Va but don't have water clear enough to see ''em only clears up on special wind & tide combo and in winter months an there off in deep water NC has good flounder giving but season closed SC prob one of the best states ?

Just a suggestion is take apiece of shiny tin about 6 inches above the light. Place on an angle slightly upwards away from the pole. Will keep the light shining more to the bottom and let you see better. Learned that from smelt dipping off the piers here in Michigan.

We used the same technique on Coleman lanterns when shrimping in Lemon Bay ,FL.Long dip nets off the old low roadway going out to Englewood Beach. We sometimes used aluminum foil. We would hang the lanterns on ropes about 2 feet above the water. The metal would reflect the light down more and help keep it out of your eyes. Good times.

I have flounder gigged as a kid and as an adult. New design waterproof lights with dewalt battery’s make it way easier than back in the day with a car battery and an old inner tube. The underwater lights really need a shield to block the light from your eyes. Note to anyone thinking of doing this: you need to accept sting rays and small sharks because your going to see them.

I made my own lights, using a 1,200 lumen flashlight, and building a PVC handle and flashlight housing. Just runs off 9 AAA batteries. It lasts about 4 hours. I’m pretty dead after that amount of time anyway. I also built a 3” PVC cooler float that floats behind me. I am curious as to why you gig with your left hand, when you seem to be right handed?

To me this is no difference from a hunter shining a light on deer at nite. Once u remove one of the 5 senses we creatures use for everything, it's no longer huntig but murdering. That's part of why I stopped spear fishing and I live in miami,FL. Any sport both competitors need to be at normal sensibility. U shine a light on the fish u blind it! I use that technique when I remove fish from aquariums that have abundant decor. It's faster and safer for the fish but hunting them like this is not for me period!

Looking at this as the spear hovers over the bottom, I'm thinking of a length of fluro, tied on so it's a little longer than the central spike of the spear, with a little soft lure on it... So, when your spear is hovering over the sand, any flattie you might have missed might just pop out to have a go, and at least be close to the spear and the lure... Love the video, and that taco!

When using lures like spoons or Clark spoon diamond jigs or even bucktails do you like fluro or mono? I heard fluro is better if you can afford it but what’s you’re opinion
@alexanderren1097
@alexanderren1097 19 күн бұрын
Couple things: 1) There’s been a LOT of marketing hype about Fluoro being “invisible” but it’s not. It is slightly more transparent than monofilament but not by much. Unless you’re in super clear water, mono is fine. If you’re in super clear water and fish are getting spooked every time you bring your bait in front of them, then try fluoro. But other than that, it’s not necessary for clarity 2) There are other reasons to use fluoro besides transparency and the main one is that fluoro sinks while mono floats so: 2a) If you’re planning to fish something that needs to float, like a topwater lure, then use monofilament because it’ll help you work the lure better than fluoro will. Mono also has more stiffness than fluoro so you want that stiffness in this application. 2b) If you’re planning to fish very small “finess” style lures, say a really really light jighead for a ned rig or dropshot or in saltwater very small artificial shrimp lures then fluoro will help your presentation because it’ll let the lure sink more naturally. Fluoro having a bit more flexibility than mono helps here too 3) If you’re fishing say swimbaits/paddletail jigs, spoons, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and other lures you’ve listed, then it really doesn’t matter and I would go with mono since it’s more cost effective. Hope that made sense. Good luck!

Do you know what I was thinking what about and instead of walking around with a gig spear, they just walk around with one short, casting rod or spinning rod and have like a fluke or soft swim bait and fly line or put a tiny split shot at the head use no jig head and whenever you see the fonder, you just kind of flick it by it and let it sink slowly and see if you could catch flounder with Rod and Reel just like you gig it, but every one of them you can catch big or small do you think that could work? PS I would like to see that.
