Hi there Mr. Kilmer I have been wanting to get a sports/muscle car and I like the V8's. I've tried the mustang and the ergonomics just aren't for me and I don't particularly like the Camaro because of its usability is non-existent so that leaves me with the Challenger. I'm wondering if a manual Challenger RT (5.7l) is a decent vehicle? I'm looking at 2015 models and up. And I ask this because I know how you feel about FCA which I have to agree with you on many points.

So, Scotty. You've been at this for 51 years. I got started late, so when I retired, I'd only been at it (professionally) for 46 years. I've now watched a LOT of your videos, and I have to say, I agree fully with at least 99% of your wise counsel. What a public service you are performing. Nothing like being in the trenches forever to lock in the right way of doing things. All but 6 years of my service work was done in Houston or the surrounding area. Different eco-system than the time in Phoenix. My progression was from Volvo to Mercedes Benz to Lincoln/Mercury to industrial pressure washer repair in Pasadena! Ownership largely followed that same track but veered off when I came to my senses and started buying Toyotas! My wife's RX350 Lexus is the pinnacle of car ownership for us, SWEET ride, for two tall, old people with bad knees. And it's safe from hurricanes up here in Georgetown. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK and take care of that tuxedo cat who does the cameos in your productions.

Because a lawnmower gets wrecked pretty quickly by the elements, maybe if you tarped it or something, a car doesn't. Also, lawn mowers sitting out look trashy, a car in a driveway doesn't. And most people trade in or sell their vehicles by the time their clear coats are worn down anyways.

For the past 20 years I have followed what Scotty has recommended in this video in the care of my 2000 Toyota Corolla. Keeping the car clean and polished (waxed) makes a huge difference in how it will present. I remember once taking this car in to the mechanic for an oil change recently and the one mechanic called his buddy over saying "Look at this." Both we're pretty impressed with how a 20 year-old Corolla can look. Wish I could say I have held up as well. Great learning experience on the auto paint process!

Ceramic coatings do work- good name brands like Carpro or Gyeon are great! The prep work is the most important part of it- you have to have it clayed, polished, stripped of waxes, and have almost perfect paint for them to get the best results. If you do this, yes, they work. If you don't, they won't be able to cure and bond properly. If you dont have the time, money, or dont really care about having completely perfect paint, then ceramic coatings arent worth it for you. Just wax your paint with a cleaner wax to give it a nice coat of protection and a light polish all at the same time. Just my 2 cents

He's probably referring to the average Joe here, and also just his own opinion. Great that you have a wax that's still there two years later, are you saying you've not done any polishing/waxing/etc since? Or is it significantly, as in showing to someone who knows nothing about cars, so much better in color and shine than what the factory can give you? Chances are, no. You're still likely having to maintain with a minimum of washes but chances are waxing/polishing as well, you're still having to take care of it, and the traditional stuff works about as well, has similar end-results, easier and more likely for the average person to do, and costs a fraction of the cost. It just might need to be applied more often; yet if it requires far less prep to begin with, seems like it's a wash at that point. It's just like the oil debate. Sure, some $50 a jug special oil may be a little better, but chances are it's really not for most, has to be in the right circumstances for it to actually be better, and for the average person is an unnecessary expense vs just maintaining properly at normal intervals using traditional tried-and-true practices and products.

I have a suggestion that nobody else seems to mention for keeping your car looking good if it is not always garaged. Just buy a car cover that has a protective layer against the sun. When I was driving my car to work I kept a big plastic bag in the trunk to use when you get caught in the rain. It has worked great for me and I save time not having to clean the car as often.

I usually do a clay bar treatment on July 1st and then wax the vehicle immediately afterward, but the white wax usually remains in some nooks and crannies, but this clear NuFinish looks a lot easier! Lots of good advice here from Scotty, I love videos that advise on how to make your car last longer. I notice that a lot of comments say not to use automatic car wash, but some people due to where they live have no real choice. I'd say that using a good quality automatic car wash is much better than not washing you car, and if you polish it 3 or 4 times a year then it will be protected from mircoscratches anyway.. That's my opinion, interested to know what others think.

Previously had a 2001 Nissan Pulsar with metallic paint. Never washed it, or waxed it. I used Meguirars Dry Ultimate Detailer, which is a mist spray, you simply wipe off the car with micro fibre cloths. It removes dust and does not in any way scratch the paint, providing you do not apply pressure to the cloths, and wipe in an horizontal pattern, so as to avoid swirls. The shine is incredible, and after 17 years, the paint was immaculate. Takes about 5 minutes to do your whole car, unless it is a US barge. This product also locks in the paint color, against fading. I now use it on my new Suzuki Swift Sport. Costs $32 in Australia. It is the ideal product product for people who live in apartments, and don't have access to a hose. I began using it when there were summer water restrictions, and never change back to water, which helps rust your car.

Tip - it's ok parking a car under a tree, EXCEPT when: a) it's a lime tree, which will deposit its sticky sap all over the car; b) if other cars parked under a tree or the ground below is covered in bird droppings, as it's obviously a busy meeting/sleeping place for your local feathered friends, and they don't car if they cr@p on your car! Additionally, when there's a poorly-fitted roof gutter, toilet cistern or water tank overflow above the car that, like with the birds, shows evidence that it has been emptying its contents of late - especially for owners of older cars or convertables that are more susceptible to water ingress. My 13yo car found this out the hard way, and ruined the nice cardboard box my new tyre footpump which I'd left in the boot (trunk) of the car.

@@Dr.Westside No, lime trees are real (in the UK at least) which produce large quantities of sap that drip onto the ground (or cars) below. Not sure about pin trees though - it's just that lime tree sap problems are real - I know as the stuff got on my car at a former workplace.

Pine tree! I bought a new Audi when I was getting out of the navy. I parked it at my moms under a pine tree and put a car tarp over it. I went back and was processed out and two weeks later the sap had been baked on somehow and ate at the clear coat. Car was never the same.

Hey Scotty, Any suggestions for those of us who have no choice but to park our cars in the beating hot sun all day (I'm in NorCal, so similar to Texas where the sun is unrelenting during the summer, and our parking lot doesn't have shade). I mean will waxing/polishing even more often assist with prevention of UV radiation? I do also use the Nu Finish (although only once or twice a year), and my current car is fine as it's newer, I'm just trying to avoid what happened to my old Civic which had it's clear-coat obliterated after a little over 10 years from sitting in the sun (and you can tell it's UV that wrecked it because it's on the side the sun would always hit it in the parking lot, the other side's clear-coat was fine).

Says not to buy into marketing hype, buys Nu Finish. I would not use Nu Finish on any paint I care about. Nu Finish is an abrasive, the elbow grease bit should clue you in. It works so well because it grinds down a fine layer of the clear coat so that once the paint protestants are gone you still have some clear coat to save you. Use a real quality wax, you won't use elbow grease and it won't damage you're paint in the process.

Nu Finish isn't meant to be used all the time. The point of Nu Finish is to remove all the oxidation. You can do this with a buffer, but many people lack the skill to use one properly; so this is a decent substitute.

As a painter by trade, I can tell you that the quality of paint on a vehicle is directly proportional to the cost of the vehicle. Actually, a good hand painter can do a better job than a machine. The biggest difference is in the paint. A top quality auto paint can run from $600-$2000 a gallon. Nobody uses that in body shops, which is why a repaint never looks as good or lasts as long. If you really want a good paint job (say you have a classic car) find an individual pro like Charlie Hutton.

Scotty, I love your videos but your comments about Ceramic Coatings are a bit off. Yes, you're probably right that there's a lot of cheap/rip off coatings that really aren't that great and just use hype marketing terms. But if you do the prep work, and get the proper brand, your car can look amazing, and stay looking amazing for a long time with less work to keep it clean for a long time.
@Jaker788
@Jaker788 5 жыл бұрын
With the benefit of scratches being on the ceramic coatings as long as their not the seep kind that would go to the pain anyways. Then you can just polish it all off and reapply and the paint looks brand new again. Without the risk of eventually going through all your clear coat. It's a lot of fucking prep work though...

@@thisismagacountry1318 I put Blackfires coating on a new black Avalon earlier this year. Even though it was new it did need a light claying, then a light polishing and body prep wipe down. The car looks like a black diamond and dirt really can n ot stick to the ultra slick surface. Plenty of other brands out there too but you have to be sure you get the existing finish corrected and squeeky clean for it to work. These coatings actually bond to the paint surface and will not work if there is any existing material on the paint. Do a Google search and there are many forums on the various brands...they are all good but remember the paint has to be properly polished and cleaned for the coating to work.

As a auto body repair & paint tech with over 10+yrs experience, Scotty is spot on. Protect your clearcoat and you’ll have a nice shiny car for years to come. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where an explanation of how destructive bird poop is, isn’t nearly as effective as when it gets cleaned off to reveal a cluster of craters. Also, the condition of Scotty’s wife 17yr old Lexus is impressive since Toyota’s reliability doesn’t extend to its paint factory finish.

Scotty, I love your stuff and this video is no exception (mostly). But: 1) Though Nu Finish calls itself a polish, it's not technically just a polish. Nu Finish is a polish and a polymer coating and it's pretty good stuff. I know Consumers' Union rated it #1 in their testing. The reason I bring it up is there are technically polishes you can buy that are JUST polishes. When you use those you use them as part of a multi-step process, where polishing is followed up by "waxing". Waxing could including an actual real wax or a polymer sealant. The sealants are said to last a little longer. Nu Finish is a time-saving combination product. Probably not a bad way to go unless you have all day long to do a ridiculous multi-step process. 2) Parking under a tree to avoid the sun? I agree that sun is bad for your car, but trees usually drip all kinds of horrible stuff on your car. I'm not sure which would be worse, but I'm thinking it would be the tree sap. It might depend on your location, though. I'm up in Washington and our sun isn't as intense as down in Texas. Thanks for the video!

I've used Meguiar's line of products on my cars for the last 25 years and I've been very satisfied with the results. I started using their stuff on a Porsche that I had in the early 90s to early 2000s and I was able to maintain that car in near showroom condition. I just got a new 370Z and I'm using their stuff on it. Their scratch removal polishes, like Scratch-X 2.0, works terrifically if you are careful in using a good foam rubber applicator pad and use proper polishing technique.
