AL I’ll make a suggestion: lay you 4 pieces of chain link fence or some kind of fencing at least 1.5’ wide on the ground around all four sides of the coop base outside. This will keep raccoons 🦝 and skunks from digging under the coop. This way you can move the pieces of fence each time U move the coop. Because they will dig under the coop at night if they’re hungry enough.
@samvalentine3206
@samvalentine3206 2 жыл бұрын
Good idea, CC. I can imagine it wouldn't be too hard for a critter to dig under an edge to gain access, and that would be bad. Anything that can be done to inhibit their entry would be good. With some roofing panels to back up the tarp from bear push-in, it would be fairly stout to resist predator ingress. (we hope!) Of course, this video was shot earlier this week - we hope the test chickens made it and didn't become predator meals!

@@brianharries no it won’t, move the coop and lay 4 pieces of wire on the ground around all four sides ! It’ll take 1 minute or less. This keeps Predators from digging under the cage. I don’t see why you say it would be hard to do a 2 foot wide piece of wire the length of that cage and four pieces of it and just lay it down on the ground beside the cage that’s not very hard to do. 🤷🏻‍♂️😏
@wanderervii
@wanderervii 2 жыл бұрын
@@brianharries you don't think AL can drag 4 pieces of fencing 20 feet across the ground when it is time to move the chicken tractor? I could do that and I'm 5 months pregnant 😅

Poly wire hasn’t failed me yet. I use it for the meat birds. I have a chickshaw for egg birds and I don’t protect that with electricity. It seems to keep the birds safe. I see predators on trip cameras in there area too.

Just a word of advice, you need to have some hardware cloth underneath the tarp. The raccoons can climb up and tear right through the tarp I have just learned this from experience.
@kristab7900
@kristab7900 2 жыл бұрын
Also wrap some poultry net or hardware cloth around the bottom sides of the coup. Raccoons will pull the chickens through the holes in the sides and snack on your chickens that way.

Yes! I'm a little worried about the top being a vulnerable point, too, with just a tarp and no metal to keep out the critters. AL: Maybe if you could surround the coop with a portable electric fence, that would add the needed protection from predators.
@robertlamb5105
@robertlamb5105 2 жыл бұрын
They're right. A bear would rip through that tarp in two seconds.

I like the look of the portable chicken pen. I, like others, am concerned about small predator critters digging under the walls of the pen. Hopefully those brave test hens will survive. Once you get your shop and welder up and running I'm sure you can build an improved version of something similar. Glad that Gina is recovering nicely, it just takes time. Thanks for sharing this with us.

My uncle uses a mobile connect camera since he lives 3 hours away from his hunting property. Make sure to have a heavy duty latch that is racoon proof. They can open lift latches. You may also want to get cattle panels to protect tarp area on the roof in case a predator tears it. A secondary perimeter with a movable electric fence is handy too.
@jangrahame4891

Glad to hear things are progressing! Might I suggest surrounding the coop with some electric mesh about 5 or 6 feet around it to train predators to stay away. I've seen coyotes slam against the mesh repeatedly to panic the birds closer to the other side, where another one can bite at the birds. Also have seen a bear peel a car open to get at food. The electric fence also works around the garden with bears too.

Love the new coop. I am worried though about bears ripping the top. Also agree with CC Rider, you need some chain link on the ground around the coop so critters can't dig under. Otherwise, it looks like a wonderful sturdy coop and since it will hold so many birds, you will only be having to move one coop of meat birds and that will be a real time saver for you. I am so happy to hear Gina is recovering as expected in the right time frame. Y'all have a Blessed day.

The new outdoor chicken coop looks good, I trust it will be as robber safe as it needs to be. The tarpaulin roof does not sound totally proof against all comers. We know you have an interesting collection of threats, just waiting for a chance to attack. I guess you could always add wire netting to further beef up any protection if it looks like being needed. Smaller animals might just want to burrow under the edges to get breakfast, lunch or supper according to the time of day. Do you have plans for any other protection measures?

The bear took out the neighbors bee hives. Coyotes left, well, they left evidence of a sad moment for someone’s pet. You will need a sturdy roof. And you will need chain link barriers along the base edges. Raccoons dig well. Best wishes for success. Sorry to be so dismal. I hope it goes well.

You have more predator pressure than I do and they can tear through the tarps. I have 2 huge LGDs now and so I don't have to worry. I love the term chicken tractor on steroids. I first heard in from Billy on Perma Pastures Farm, but he uses it for the technique he has learned to get chickens to grow and even lay without using grain while they make yards of compost for him. I am so delighted to see you putting out this video about homesteading. I have missed your farming videos. What a wonderful thing for you to do.

Gina is going through so much. Bless her heart. I’m sure it seems long. Healthy nourishment will help her recover faster. So she’s lucky to have many good foods from the farm. Herbal teas are good too but check with contractions to anesthesia drugs. Very important. Hugs as you see chickens moving to the farm already! And goat fence next. Exciting times!

I had to chuckle when you flipped that box down and were about to open it. I said to myself, "I could never do that. My OCD would make me flip it so the top is up before opening it." Then you went ahead and did just that. LOL

Thanks for Gina’s update. Will be praying she gets more rest and that the coming up visit will prove useful for removal of the urinary catheter. She is so brave to have been able to find and trust her excellent physicians about the medical plans to eradicate and end her urinary and bowel problems all at once!! Al’s obvious love and support is a very helpful part of Gina’s healing journey. Really hope you plan on hardware cloth or really heavy chicken wire over that tarp roofing and as a preventative perimeter all around on the ground as raccoons could be through that tarp or under that lower edge easily SO easily.

Small predators like Weasels, Possums, Raccoons, Fox, Bobcat, and Coyotes will find it very easy to get into/under your chicken tractor. Of course if the bears want them, they will tear the whole thing apart to get them. Good Luck.

I see others suggesting improvements to the coop. I’ve seen others use ridged hog or cattle panels around the bottom perimeter to stop the diggers. They fold up and can clip to the sides for moving and then fold back down. Keep up the great work, looking fantastic.

We had chickens for thirty years and thought we had Fort Knox. Two weeks ago, raccoons got in (dug under railroad ties ) and got 13 of our chicks. They are relentless. We now have added an electric fence. So far so good.

Looks like predators will burrow right under that pronto. Wire mesh needed around the base for sure. Electric fence like premier 1 too around whole thing before chickens or goats come IMO. Good luck Al..

Rope/string was great idea Al. I know myself I put 3 tie straps on everything because plastic gets brittle in the sun and cold and the snap off easily over a short period of time. I'm going with rope from now on! I also can't wait to see how great the grass will look after a few seansons. Grass farmer Al!

one more little suggestion: insert some long narrow branches for the birds to roost upon. Branches can be harvested from the trees you have trimmed. If the branches are up high enough, and any predetor sneeks in, they can get up off the ground. Love the new "Coop" and glad that Gina is doing well!

Continued prayers! Don’t cheat on lifting Gina! I had an incision from my sternum to the pelvic bone and I was very careful…until I lifted too much without thinking and popped a huge ventral hernia. That resulted in another surgery. Also, think about the pups too. Coyotes are smart and they will lure your dogs in play then the pack will attack. We fenced the area off our back porch so our border collie could go potty without being attacked. Just a thought!
