• The Chateau Diaries 04...
In todays video we tour the chateau rooms hidden from public view, and have a supernatural encounter.
Help me to keep making videos and restoring this building by visiting my patreon page.
www.patreon.com/user?u=33158583
My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle.
We film and edit everything ourselves.
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

Mrs Patmore must definitely have had some ( pretty good)Education at the primary in the Victorian era prior to become a cook as she knew the Nile is a river and it was far away. 👍 😁 I bet not many of her contemporary servant fellows would have caught what she meant to say....anyway 🧐( I wonder how many of us would know where the Nile is🤔)

That moment when you were in the attic and shown the engraving of the person's name really reminded me of the quote... "They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time.” chilling, but wonderful.

Oh my goodness. For some reason, that quote really hit me. It's probably because I don't have children so my line through time stops with me. After my nieces pass away, that's probably the last time that my name will be mentioned. God knows best so I will trust in his plan for me.

Living The Good Life Your comment resonated with me. There is only my sister and I, no children. When we pass that will be it. The concept of having someone mention your name after you die hasn’t occurred to me. It’s certainly strange. But as you say it’s all in God’s plan. And I take comfort in the billions that have gone before us who were here once and names never repeated.

Please don't be shocked, and don't laugh either. But when I was at boarding school in the UK, we had washstands by our beds, with white enamel bowls, large jugs, and enamel lidded pails underneath. Each floor had a (bigger) arrangement, similar to those in your chateau, with taps and stone sink, from which each morning we collected hot water in our jugs for washing, and then took the slop pails back, to empty them!! None of us, at the time, thought it was at all strange! It was a very nice school and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. I feel quite nostalgic seeing the rooms in your chateau. What you think is antique, would possibly have been in use, till not that long ago.

I'm glad you mentioned it. I don't believe those were bedrooms. They must have been storage rooms for linens, and all kinds of extra furniture, doodads, seasonal items like Christmas decorations or lawn chairs etc. The castle is not that big for an army of servants to be living there. If there were five or six servants that would be tops.

Little bit of trivia, it Victorian times in some caves with Stalactites ( the ones that go down ) they used to put molds Under them and they would fill up with lime scale and after a while they would demold, cameos and objects that they would mount and sell. You can still find small 'scenes' and cameos made like this ,,,, getting away from the point, ANOTHER great video Michael thank you .

Monetize with ads like Stephanie. Those who don't like click through and the rest of us click like and endure the ads to give revenue. All Stephanie had to do was mention how it works once and anyone who saw that now goes along with it happily to support.

Funny you mention this. Since Stephanie explained how it works, I've just muted the adverts and let them play through while attending to other things so she can earn a little from them. Seeing my wife and I have watched her entire series twice, and some of her episodes multiple times, I'd like to think we are helping.

I had no idea this was how it worked. I just assumed they'd get the revenue even if we skipped the ads. Thank you for letting me know about this, it's important that we support those who make the content we get to enjoy!

I.s.s.y I didn't know either until Stephanie explained it. They shouldn't be ashamed to let us know how we can contribute. There are 22 year olds buying houses from revenue off "for members only." They should be ashamed.

God bless you all for saving that beautiful chateau! It’s absolutely gorgeous! I love it when people save those beautiful historic homes! TY! I wished I lived in that area, I would make the windows for you. My father was a master carpenter and I took after him and learned a lot from him. I would love to purchase a place there however I couldn’t afford it. Great videos! Thank you for sharing! I know you’re kidding however there are spirits there. I’m an empath and I feel them even through videos. There are at least two that I could feel. They are good spirits.

Delightful and interesting tour, Michael, and presented with your refreshing directness and honesty. You also have more in common with 'Downton Abbey' than you may realise...Highclere Castle (I live next door) ALSO has leather figured wall coverings in the entrance hall! ANYTHING you can do to restore/retain the scraps thst you have left from your own property would be a very worthwhile enterprise.

What a blessing seeing one of these ancient beautiful places being restored and not left to decay and eventually be claimed by Mother Earth. It will obviously take years of hard work and dedication to put it back to its original state. But, it will all be worth it. Thank you so much for sharing. I really enjoyed watching the video. Can't wait to see it when you've completed it. If I am still alive. Hopefully.

Spectacular! I'd explore the chateau as well. ...Love the wink of a tribute to Downton Abbey thrown in there. ...Even though the servant's room was small and without heat, the view of the sunset was sublime from that vantage point. ...HA! A rather amusing ending. Michael, you're quite a natural in front of a camera. 👍🏼

Hurray for all of you! Having the whole extended family living together is a treat. I miss that I cannot see my grandchildren growing up day by day. There are so many rooms that everyone has their private sanctuary. Working on the house will be a lifelong endeavor. But you can live there comfortably and take your time fixing the chateau at your own pace. You have saved a jewel of architecture. You have my total admiration! God bless you!

Even though you are living there a while you have such excitement when you are going around the chateaux, its like you are there for the first time in some of these rooms, so lovely. It reminds me of when you find something exciting as a child and you are just bursting to share it with someone and you get all excited and happy, you have this, that is how you know you have found your place :)
