I've had a 55,000 BTU Reddy Heater since the mid 90's and the last few winters it has been very hard to get it going, especially when it's colder outside. I would take the cover off and notice that the fan wouldn't be turning so I'd squirt some WD40 on the shaft and spin the fan by hand until I got it freed up enough that it would finally start. Then this winter that wouldn't work so I was pricing new ones and where to buy one when I was looking at vids on what to do and I found this one. I had always thought that the pump in the back was mostly for fuel and I was hesitant about tearing into it. Thanks to your video I was able to tear it apart, clean it, check for clearances, put it back together and now it works great. Thank you, thank you very much.

Nice , helpful video. As a career mechanic only advice I can give is to wear some surgical gloves when spraying brake clean or anything else. After years of neglect I noticed slight tingling when using stuff like this. Stuff gets into our hands, etc. Again, good video

Good advice in addition to doing it outside or with good forced ventilation. Most people have no clue how truly destructive that stuff is. You think you're a tough guy until you're laying in a hospital bed with tubes coming out of you & you can't support your family anymore, 40 years too early.

3:36 pencil graphite contains clay. Feels slippery on your fingers, but the clay is abrasive and is counterproductive for lubrication.

Missed the critical step. The edge of the vain's against the steel housing will cause the end of vain's to edge bur over time. So the quick fix to solve that problem of the vains sticking in the channels, it to just use some 800 sand paper to side lap the vain's to remove the edge burs/give the bearing edges a slightly chamfered edge both ends. Same goes for the channels in the back plate unit to remove any ridging that the tip of vain burs may have caused in the plate channel as well. Hence vains in the end plate, should move freely at all times, with the citrifical force of the back plate spinning causing the vane's to drop down at bottom of stroke, and the upper stroke pushing them back in. The graphite works to help them move freely to lower the friction value when spinning, but they again, vanes should be moving freely to begin with in the back plate (read knock off the edge burs). Also, the graphite will not gum up after a while if you tried to use grease or oil, and does not have an cohesion effect of the vain's to the back plate channels (so the vanes can move faster as needed). As for how the pump works, it pushes air pressure to the nozzle (no suction involved with the fuel at the back side of the pump), and the air pressure through the nozzle causes a bernoulli effect to pull the fuel up from the tank from its tube up the tube, and out the front of the nozzle so it spraying the fuel in to the burn chamber. The fan itself is just adding more air to the burn chamber to get a more efferent burn of the fuel. Hence if the nozzle does have air pressure from the pump, the air pressure has been correctly adjusted (see side plate for the needed amount of pressure for a given unit) but the nozzle is not spraying fuel, then double check for derbies that may have been pulled up from the tank tube to block the nozzle's fuel side. Note here, the fuel line does have a filter on it in the fuel tank, so step one if nozzle is not pushing fuel with air pressure from the pump to the nozzle, pull the fuel line off the nozzle to blow air through it to clean the end of tube line filter back in the tank. Also, would be a good time to pull the fuel from the tank to clean the debris out of it as well.

This unit works very well kzbin.infoUgkxl2o1MQU4aMgmFk_cMqer4nH2ptpDEM6h Considering the price I paid for this, I didn't have high expectations, but now after using it, I consider this is a well designed heater. Do be aware that doing the dry burn on the wick as recommended (or at least every two tanks) is absolutely necessary to avoid an unclean burn, fortunately it's easy enough to do. I'm burning dyed K1 kerosene and do a dry burn every two tanks and this is working great. This unit will heat a little over the 500 square feet that it is rated for depending on the temperature. On days it isn't bitter cold this heater will do a fair amount more. This makes an excellent emergency heat source, and also in my situation, it is a little more efficient than the electric heat in the teen temps and below.

I believe the aor pump creates air that blows across the venturi to draw up fuel to the nozzle and pumps air across the nozzle to create fuel vaporized. No vacuum except in nozzle itself.

The pump does not draw the fuel or spray the fuel it is a are pump. That blows air over the pick up tube and creates a fuel cyphen. Good points for showing the fix 👏

I assumed my problem was a bearing on the motor because it would hang up. I decided to watch your vid even though it had nothing to do with what I thought was my issue. I decided to follow your vid and check my pump. Turned out the centrifugal fins were gummed up and binding the pump. If I had not watched your vid I would have pulled the motor and changed the bearings. Thank you!!

I noticed the second line going from back of fan to injector and was not getting any fuel out, i was so confused what the hell was going on. I thought the pressure in the tube brought the fuel out. Until this videos i had no idea there was a graphite pump back there and sure enough all the fan blades were siezed. This video just saved me from buying another 400 diesel torpedo, thank you very very much

Thanks for the good info .... my Remington 135 fan seized up after maybe an hours use. I discovered the graphite rotor was rubbing against the top center of the housing. I couldn't have done this repair without you and a few others to lend a helpful hand with your well done videos. I see the vanes have a good amount of travel so later this coming spring I will widen the inside of the housing on my lathe to prevent any further contact.

Don't widen the housing on the lathe. There is no need. I had the same problem on my unit. The fan kept "seizing" up. You could turn it by hand, but the motor wasn't strong enough to start the heater. On mine, I removed the rotor and sanded the high spot on it (I had more than one). I also had to lay it down flat and sand it as well using a figure eight motion. It was a tad thick. I later found out that if you don't use the heater enough, the rotor can swell from summertime high humidity. Use a super fine automotive sand paper, probably 1500 to 2000 grit. Take your time and you can get it to work. I found this solution somewhere on the internet, but can't remember where. Sorry.

You are supposed to just losen the screws on the rotor housing and set the clearence with a .06 feeler gauge at the top where the fins are retracted all the way in. The why it seems like the motor is seized. DO NOT sand anything or rework it on s lathe. Your clearence is off thats all. I've had brand new units that were set wrong from the factory.

Still running fine. I did make a video on replacing the rotor, so i have changed it since making the first video, and I did have to clean it several times since I shot the video. This is because the actual fan motor is on its last leg and i have been using WD-40 to lube the motor. Since the bearings are wearing out, the WD-40 leaks into the chamber and gums up the graphite. I am trying to get the most use out of it, so i don't mind cleaning once in awhile. I've tried cleaning it and not using the graphite but it seems to not last as long without it. I'm glad the video helped!

Mine broke one of those little slider-vanes so it was easy to diagnose without a tear-down. But after I cleaned, lubed with graphite, and installed the rebuild kit, my heater would still not work. It acted like there wasn't enough fuel to sustain combustion. Eventually I diagnosed this to low air pressure. So, I dug in again but did not find anything to suggest a problem. After thinking on the problem I figured the must be an air leak. With so little air in the system a very small air leak will cause a big problem. When I reassembled the components I took extra care to be certain the pre and post air filters were not pinched in the mating surfaces. Also, I applied common grease to the rubber gasket on the pressure side of that end cap. That is all it took to fix the problem - air pressure instantly restored. I keep wondering what a coating of silicone spray would do for the pump blades? There's stuff that sprays on wet, but the solvent evaporates quickly to leave a dimensionally insignificant layer of something like Teflon on surfaces. I used to use it on various items that needed some form of lubrication, but where a traditional wet lube would just attract muck until it turned into something like grinding paste ! I had the pump apart on mine so many times before I finally got some graphite powder to lube those blades. I found the best technique was to hit all the pump parts with brake cleaner, put on some fresh rubber gloves, and rub the powder into all the surfaces of the blades, then rub the large flat faces of the pump hub with whatever was still stuck to my gloves. Once I reassembled it all it worked fine, but after about 5 or 6 hours of use I took it apart again just to check it was all still moving freely. It was, so I repeated the filthy job and (At least THAT part of) it's been perfect since. Another problem I had was that the ball bearing in the pressure valve had become rusty, and depending on how it sat on it's seat it could be letting way too much or too little air blead off. That was a pretty simple fix. I just bought a little bag of stainless bearings for next to nothing online (6.5mm IIRC). One of them fixed that problem instantly. There was an "Ease of use" mod that I've done to mine that's proved to be pretty useful, and worth sharing. It was to remove the tiny and easily clogged fuel filter, then I drill a couple of holes in the side cover that has the thermostat and power switch in it. I then fitted rubber grommets in the holes, and replaced the fuel hoses with longer ones that now come out that side. This was so I can fit inexpensive large clear plastic automotive fuel filters there. They mean I can see when the tanks running dry from a distance (The filter starts emptying), I can instantly tell when a filters getting clogged, replacing it's now literally a 20 second and relatively clean job, I can get 15 of these filters for the price of a single standard one, and if somehow any gunk DOES get past it and clogs the jet, I can just pop off the hose from the filters outlet and give the jet a blast with the compressors air gun without having to open any of the casings. If you run one of these off pure clean diesel, this modification probably isn't worth the effort, but I run mine on diesel I buy cheap from the local car scrap (Junk) yard. It's a mix of new diesel, old diesel, probably even cooking oil, people have tried running their cars in, and each serving of this stuff comes with a free helping of floaty bits of dirt, rust particles, and unidentifiable crud....... But it's half the price of easily obtainable fuel from anywhere else, and my space heater will happily drink it. 😁. I filter this diesel soup through some cloth before filling the heaters tank, but a little muck invariably get's through. The upgraded filter usually catches it though.

If i remember correctly the center has a t shape to it . Make sure it is in the slot correctly. If you replaced the part make sure it is the correct thickness.

Hey I have a heatstar 35000 btu heater and recently it's not been having a high flame output even though my propane tank is on high? Most of the time I can turn the propane knob barely and the flame will get super big. Now its running on super low mode

Not really sure how those run, however if it has propane there is probably a regulator on the line that attaches to the propane tank and that can be the problem. I also had a problem with a new line i had for a grill and the tread area that went into the take was too long and kept the fitting from seating in the propane tank. So i had to grind some of the treads on the new line and that worked for me. Just trying to give you a few ideas. Let me know if any of them worked or if you solved the problem.

You know guys that's exactly what goes wrong with about 90% of them the little pump fingers don't slide down after they get dirty I like to use a little bit of Scotch-Brite in between all the teeth and then I sand the teeth all down a little bit and man my pump runs red hot in the front no stink runs perfect

Mine also was shutting down every now and then but now it won't even kick back on, I use Kerosene and the fluid is spraying out of the front with motor running but no flame. Took it apart and found two of the rubber hose were completely dry-rotted and riddled with cracks...I'll replace those and try this cleaning he's doing and see if it works

One of the neighboring tenants said that he has a torpedo heater that he can't get to work. He said the glow plug is burning bright but he can't figure out why it won't induct the fuel. Great video. Helped me fix my heater pretty easily. I will add that the orientation of the little fins seemed to matter at least in my case, they seemed to move more freely when placed in there a certain way. I agree with Dean below the graphite didn't seem to help.

Thanks for sharing the placement of the blades! I may have gotten lucky. It didn't word for me without the graphite. I first tried shaving graphite from a pencil and that didn't work. It worked when i used lube in a tube. I dont think the parts are made from graphite. I do believe they are a carbon fiber. However i do believe that everyone's case is going to be different and i appreciate your comments.

2:20 Correction. It doesn't pump, it blows. Just pull the hose off and blow through it and fuel will come out of the nozzle. As long as you can blow you will have heat. lol.

Thank you! I heard that and paused to see if anyone else caught it. It is not a vacuum pump, it is a blower and it uses a venturi to create the suction to bring fuel up, it is the safest way. Works just like an air-powered paint sprayer. His first test should have been to pull the hose off and blow, if fuel came out then the blower is not blowing, if no fuel, then the blower hose is clogged, then no need to pull the blower apart.

I tried looking for this part and unfortunately i found that the manufacturer no longer makes this part and there is no substitute. It appears that they are right, there doesn't seem to be one. The only thing I can think of is to find someone that has one for parts.

Sounds like something is getting pinched or grounded out in someway. If the fan stops running as well it has to be a short of some kind. If the flame goes out and the fan keeps running then I would think it is and air flow problem or a line is getting pinched or a wire for a sensor is grounding out.

Thanks for this video. I have taken these types of heaters apart in the past, sometimes I can fix them, sometimes not. But I've never seen one torn down as far as you did, with the four little fingers in the grooves. Also have a couple of questions. What about spray can graphite? Also, can I burn different types of fuel? My latest one is about 3 years old, and it will burn kerosene or any kind of diesel fuel. The older ones, from the 80s or 90s, say kerosene only. What is the difference?

I'm not 100 percent sure what the difference is. I think it has something to do with the nozzle. Its like converting regular gas to propane, you have to change the little brass nozzles. As for the spray, what ever you use needs to be dry. Anything i have tried like oil lubricants , have gummed up and i had to take them apart and clean them again. There can't be any moisture in that chamber or it will gum up rather quickly.

Tell me, how did dry graphite prove itself in business? I tried to apply graphite from an aerosol "liquid" hour the rotor worked and stuck together)))) I had to disassemble and clean. I haven't applied dry graphite yet, I plan to do it.

I fixed many of these.Vanes on pump stuck same issue. This is an air pump not a vacuum. Air pressure goes into the ejector sucking fuel and sprays out of nozzles. Other common issues are: CAD( electric eye which verifies fire in chamber pointing at flame) cell dirty causes unit to shut off in a few seconds if no flame.You can clean off and aim it at flame. Cracked dry rotted fuel hoses no fuel to nozzle. Screw with ball and spring sets air pressure 5-10psi to adjust fuel delivery. If out of adjustment unit won't work correctly. Factory has spec on pressure.

Also it should be noted that graphite is not required, the air pump just needs to be cleaned thoroughly or replaced.

I'm surprised you didn't check the air line first. I have fixed a few of these for having the same problem. And each time, I found that the air line becomes old and brittle. As a result, they crack and break, or loose a seal around the fitting where it attaches causing an air leak. Good video.

@@Doityourselfwithjoe for one the fuel line and air lines was broken and rotted I cleaned the photocell then I noticed the screw to turn up air pump had backed out a good bit so I adjusted that and now it runs great

Not sure. You can apply some and see if it works. Just cleaning the fins may be all it needs. Nothing can be wet because it will gum up and you will have to take it apart again.

it could be. Try taking the siphon hose off and send compressed air through as it is starting. Dont set the pressure to high. If the heater keeps running, then that is your problem.

Any idea why my heater only runs if it’s tilted? If I pick up the front end and set up on a block or something, it will run, ( or the back end)otherwise it won’t if it’s sitting flat!

I want to say it has something to do with the pickup tube in the tank. It doesn't make sense, front or back though.

I have one that the fan won't spin? When I spin it by hand it has a tight spot where the fan stops. I can force it past it but when I plug it in it just stops?

The fan is shot. You can take the fan apart and try to lube the shaft with WD40 or oil. and let it sit for a couple of hours. That might help and give you another season. You might be able to order one online or get one from Grainger.

If you have a compressor turn the pressure down to about 50 psi. Take the hose that comes from the back and stick the air nozzle into the hose. Start the machine. once its ready to start blow compressed air into the line. If it keeps running then something is wrong with the pump. I have a master heater that I run diesel in. iv only had it a year and don't use it very often. just when I'm working in the garage. I plug my heater in and it trys to start but wont... I can try it 10 times in a row and it still wont start. I walk away for 10 minutes and come back and it fires up right away. any idea what my issue could be. haven't taken anything apart yet.

I'm so glad I found you on this repair that was just what was wrong with mine blower. I had no idea how I was going to fix it. I'm in ga. An for a year I could not fine anyone that can repair these heater . I had Asked a friend and he has had 7 and couldn't fine anyone also. I just want to say think you so very much on that repair. before you take it apart again, and if you have access to compressed air, turn the machine on then take an air hose and shoot compressed air into the line. If it fires up then the problem is in the rotor area. Then i would take the cover off the rotor and by hand make sure the blades drop into place. If that is working fine you may have to hook up a pressure gauge and turn the adjustment screw that controls the pressure.

That’s a rotary vane pump use very light oil. Don’t put graphite on the vanes. Graphite removes material like sandpaper.

My heater seems to spray to much when it is running (which sometimes it doesn't start and blows smoke) it send out droplets in the heat when it is running. You see a little kerosene on the bottom of the front that is not burning. Any ideas

There could be something in the nozzle that is causing it not to spray a mist or its possible the pressure is to high.

I don't know much about this model. I would need more information. Does it do anything at all? I think these are the models that flashes trouble code. Is it giving a code? If the green light is on we know it is getting power. Does it hum? Does the fan turn on? Does it have a fuse?

Thanks for the vid, love the scaffolding repurpose into workbench trick. After replacing filters with new and adjusting PSI to 3.5, I get fuel and spark into the burn chamber, but it takes forever to fire and mimics engine flooding. Before I replaced filters it fired instantly. I replaced them because they were falling apart. Anything to troubleshoot for this?

I learned today that it will fire right off if I remove the hood. Leave hood on, no fire, flooding. 02 not getting to the fire when hood on. Hoping to learn more this week. I got sidetracked while converting an old television cabinet to a hardware bin, hence the scaffolding comment above. Love it.

not much left to replace. I'm not sure if there is an over heat sensor or not. Try to run the heater with and air hose and see if it still shuts off. If you have a compressor, turn down the air. Then take the hose off the pump and stick the compressor air nozzel in the hose from the air pump. See if that works. I have a video on how to do that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIfRqIekjLmCibM. If it still act up then you will have eliminated the air pump. After that i can't imagine what might be wrong because of what you've already replaced. If you do get it fixed please post back here on what it was. It may help others with the same problem.

The only thing I would do different is put on some nitrile gloves!! Spraying carb clean or brake clean all over your hands is not good in the long run. That stuff can cause nerve problems. Also graphite isn't easy to get off. Good video other than that.

I figured it out why the fan wasn't spinning. Someone along the line had put the black carbon thing in backwards. So what in the world would cause the heater not to light when you can see fuel spraying in and the glow plug lighting? Even double checked to make sure it was 1-k kerosene. It is getting air from the pump. Sprayed out the nozzle and can blow fuel thru the line into the tank.
