I was able to repair my torpedo heater - thanks to you! Your initial message of "First, understand HOW is works." was the key. I've have enjoyed many of your videos. Your sense of humor is refreshing and your practical approach (e.g. "It's not the Space Shuttle!") is exactly what I need. Typically, you don't skip important process steps and your "Mr. Cameraman" manages to show the details that are usually missed by other providers. Even though I've been repairing and maintaining an array of farm equipment for more than 30 years, your excellent videos have given me confidence to take on repairs that I might have otherwise handed over to a professional. Thanks very much!

All that talk about diesel fuel got me to thinking about bio-diesel, so I did some homework and picked up some fry oil at the local Chinese restaurant. After straining it, I started mixing it in with my fuel. I haven't come up with an exact formula yet, but it works and helps me stretch my fuel. The only drawback so far is every time I'm outside working I get a real hankering for an egg roll. :/

Taryl you're awesome! You've unlocked the secrets of these machines. I had a Dayton unit that I curb picked almost 10 years ago, but I could never figure out what the problem was or understood just how these things worked. After I watched your video, I cleaned and adjusted the plug, blew out the nozzle and saw a tiny bit of dirt come out, and did a quick check of the air pressure, Plugged it in and said THERE'S MY DINNER! Thanks so much! Winter is just around the corner and I sure will need this. If you were a woman I'd kiss ya...but your not...so I won't.

Not only are you very entertaining...you showed me a tip that no ther video showed me which helped me get my torpedo working. The gapping on the air pump was my issue and your the first to mention it. I didn’t even know it was an issue. Soon as I gapped it.. it fired up!! Thanks a bunch!!

Taryl Your a gem !!! I was gonna toss my old torpeedy heater but tomorrow I'm gonna jump on it.. FWIW.. Jet airliners have this problem and at altitude, the algae w/ water can freeze in the fuel filters and even in the fuel tanks so usually the hydraulic system heat exchangers are in one of (or all) of the tanks to keep the fuel warm enough not to gel up and freeze.. We use a product called "Prist" to dry 'em out and kill the algae.. Same crap you get at Autozone "anti gel" diesel treatment.. so throw a little in the heater every once in a while.. Blessings from Nawthrn' MS.

At first when I started this video, I thought oh boy, here we go! I stopped it and read the first review, and the review was a guy really appreciative of your video, so I went back and watched it through! I got a kick out of it, and I thought I'd probably have done the same thing in my earlier years! LOL! I really liked the croissant wrench part, and it was really informative about everything! I hope everyone starts doing it like you do! Wait, no I don't, cause then I probably would be tryin to find yours again! Right on, carry on Taryl! 😎👍

well thanks for the education master Taryl . I worked today on a 150,000 BTU Kerosene /diesel torpedo style heater by GUARDIAN i needed to use in my American friend's Garage so we can tackle his wife's Van and fix it , it was cold , found the motor and air pump were clogged up with nasty dirt and gunk like a crippled turtle trying to hide its turd on an icy lake ,also found out it's sparking , and working fine , but no fuel going in to the jet , so tomorrow I will fix that and follow your steps to his machine specs though and let you know . thanks a bunch again Master . love your videos and keep up the great work . yours : the Wacky Iraqi Bastard .

Hands down best video on "the guts" of these machines. You are mos-def right on 'nem boogers'. My newest heater had sat with 7 gals of k-1 in it for 1-1/2 yrs. it turned to total crap. I have those algae blobs in my tank and apparently they are the root cause of my dewalt 185kbtu sputtering and shooting flames every 2 seconds. Also my stored k-1 in my SHTF containers is now contaminated too. Inside my blue plastic fuel cans full of k-1 is a layer of black slime and flaky sediments. Thanks again for a great walk thru on this topic.

Y'all do some awesome videos. I'm working on one right now. Igniter lights up but don't see gas spraying. Already cleaned nozzle and checked lines and fuel filter. I'm thinking mine is the rotor. Needs to clean it up and try again. Already cleaned once but still didn't work. Anyways thanks for taking the time to make videos. Y'all do make the best ones. And taryl I do believe you can figure out a way to fix anything.

Great video! Super informative and amuzing to beat! My fan wouldn't turn, easily anyway. Moisture made its way to the pump housing where it rusted and wouldn't allow the rotor to turn. After a few hours of sanding the rust away with 600 and 1500 grit paper rust was mostly removed. Reassembled and torpedo started right up. Nice to have heat again!

PA LAWN Guy, Taryl it was nice to hear you say "If you know how it works you can fix anything" I told my students that for 40 years, but it was harder all the time to get them to believe it. The education system are coming closer all the time to strictly "rote" learning. We are in trouble for sure as a nation. The students come closer all the time to not be able to think for them selves. The statement I would hear all the time was "just tell us exactly what you want and we will give it back to you". The implication being, don't ask us to think. Are they all this way? No, a very few can.

Good video , again. I got 2 of these Dyna-Glo ones, model KFA 50 H. And, i cleaned, checked, everything. Photocell, the air pump assembly / wipers, adjusted it to 1/5,000 at the top. Assembled all.... no go. FUSE , a small one, on circuit board, checked good. So, is there a replacement control board, or is it some other sensor....? Thanks, tanks alot for any info / education.

I had 2 of those to work on, a Dakon and a Sears, neither used the spark plug, but had the adjustable electrodes. Dakon had been out of business and the sears was old and the transformer had gone bad. We had a plumbing place across the alley and one of the guys there helped me keep them working with furnace parts. That was 25 or more years ago, the fuel must have had more additives in it, because I never did have any trouble with the "boogers", good video.

Love the video! I have a question, I have a Master 135K BTU unit that burps with a flame every few seconds. Otherwise, it works fine. I've cleaned out most of what was on the video and repaired an air hose at the air pump. I'm trying to figger out how to get to the nozzle to blow it down as per the manual...it's different than the vid. And I will be cleaning fuel filter next. Also, since I've completed what I've done, I've kicked her back on and the pump seems to running much higher (supposed to be 5.5 psig but now at 6.9 psig). I'm gonna try the screw adjustment but didn't seem to help last night. Otherwise, this is running okay but the burping flame is spookin' the strippers.

check your air pressure, even if it is set to specs, adjust up/down - it should get worse in one direction and better in the other. Check for air flow blockage, check for proper fan speed (I don't know how - replace the motor). Replace the fuel nozzle.

hey be very careful with that heater with paint fumes and paint thinner, you should see the heating dome at the end might seem like its getting extra red or even see flames coming out of the end a inch or 2 as it pumps air mixed with the paint fumes and inside a house after about 3 hours of running if you feel light headed, dude, stop and open windows to air it out, you can carbon monoxide yourself. you should know the light head feeling and it may affect your thinking ability. so just watch out you no go boom and no dinner or any more dessert for you. if you see flames coming out the end while your painting, this is the fumes burning in the air it is pumping, you might go extra large on the boom and need to paint a new house for some one.

Great and entertaining video Taryl! I fixed a cracked fuel line in a Dyno flo heater and its working great (output looks perfect) except for a small amount of fuel that appears at the end (output) of the heater after it runs for a few minutes. I checked the pressure ~4 psi and removed the nozzle and blew it out but the problem persists. Have you ever seen this? My guess is the nozzle is bad where it might spit fuel that is not ignited when running but its damn tricky to observe.

Taryl. I have a real problem with a 100k Reddy Heater. It spits flames and you can hear it like miss when it does this. I have cleaned the nozzle, cleaned and gapped the spark plug, cleaned the electric eye, replaced the fuel and air lines. I have rebuilt the pump assembly and have way more than required air pressure. I have purchased new fuel and run the heater directly out of the fresh fuel can. I have cleaned the fan as well as the whole heater. I do not know where to go next to look for the problem. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you so much.

Awesome and very instructional video 👍👍 New subscriber here! I have the one with a spark plug. And it says "Add Gasoline". So, it is not a diesel/Kerosene unit. Just got it from my Father in Law, who had not used in years! Just settin' in a pike of other stuff. It's a Toro Porta-Heat. It is Not igniting. Now I know to check the back of the motor, since that is the pump that appears to be the "Heart" of that darn thing! Also it doesn't have the Photo Cell doohickey, but does have something that looks like one of them "Ant Traps" with two wires connected ed to it. I presume it does a similar thing to ensure there's a flame or something? Can you tell me what that is? And if that is something I can clean?

Any idea why a brand new Flame Out Control (circuit breaker) would fry the second time it was tripped? Dang things are over $60 (and non-returnable of course), so I'm hesitant to shell out another $60 for a new one. The original Flame Out fried also. What would cause that?

Who would one reduce the heat output of one of these? I have a protemp45 and would like to have it output less heat. My guess is lowering the pressure and putting a smaller nozzle in. Are those nozzles universal fitting? Or do I need to get one from protemp who, I would guess, don't make smaller nozzles as I already have since the 45 model is already the smallest.

Reddy torpedo heater blows out small flames and also blows out puffs of smoke while running. Checked pump pressure and looks to be okay per unit specs. What to do?

My heater starts to make a fast clicking noise, then shuts off. Most of the time it does not do it, just once in a while. Have you heard of this issue? Thanks for the great vid!

My Remington won't stay running with the top ON. It has a hood style cover with a hinge. It runs perfect with the lid open, but literally shuts off when you put the lid down. You can hear the motor pitch change like the air flow is restricted. I checked and cleaned everything, but it still does that. It's weird.
