POP What an underestimated album that is. GONE, just one of the great songs from that great album.

This may sound corny, but its how I feel… It genuinely hurts my heart how the band feels about this album. They’ve distanced themselves from it almost completely at this point. To an extent I get why. I’m sure its very difficult when you introduce something as art and it gets criticized heavily. And since they have such an extensive catalog to choose from when choosing set-lists, they basically act like it doesn’t exist. But this album was so good. Gone and Please are easily two of their best live tracks. And they never play them. Please on the 1997 MTV music awards is a top-five U2 moment for me. Just absolute perfection.
@Psychoanalytix2 жыл бұрын
Agree completely. I think it was a calculated move to distance themselves from the Achtung-Zooropa-POP trilogy of great albums and reinvent themselves as dad-friendly stadium rock once more. POP was simply the scapegoat because they couldn't really dunk on Achtung or Zooropa too much (both were big hits). The sad ending to this story is that apart from one good record (All That...), they never recovered and basically became the Cranberries minus Dolores and with added obnoxiousness (Lady Gaga? iPod spam? Really?) and smoke and mirrors. POP was the last attempt at a great record these guys ever made.
@TennisLegends-ebay2 жыл бұрын
What did you think of the Pop remixes on their hits album etc?
@morkygorky2 жыл бұрын
The weird thing is that Pop has a stunning array of good songs, but it may not work as a "full album" - whereas Zooropa has an odd mix of minor songs or almost b-sides but it really works as a coherent album!! I guess they worked too long on Pop and was also pressured by a deadline.....
@alexandriaocasio-smollett50782 жыл бұрын
@@TennisLegends-ebay They’re not bad. For the most part, they just basically tweaked them to make them more radio friendly. But since those tweaks didn’t result in getting on the radio, it almost reeks of desperation. And I don’t think they really ever totally recovered from it.

@fallinginthed33p Yep. Larry finished early. Edge wanted to keep going. They crossed signals somehow. It doesn’t show it on this video, but on the behind the scenes DVD extras as soon as edge tosses and kicks his guitar, he immediately darts for Larry starts screaming at him. From what I can see he looks like he’s pointing at himself saying “you were supposed to follow me“.

This song doesn’t get its due! “Gone” may be one their most hard rock songs they ever perform! I also like how they let the song evolve throughout the years to the point where they re-recorded it on the greatest hits CD. And I must say that I kind of miss Bono playing rhythm guitar on some of these songs. It added another element of Rock & Roll to some of their songs.

Actually, The Edge had planned a solo part that the band rehearsed a few times. He for forgot to play it during the first night in Boston and figured he’d make it up during the second night in Boston. The second night in Boston is what is being used in this video. The Edge forgot to play the solo for the second night in the row. That’s why Adam looks at Larry and then the Edge before Bono sings “You’re taking steps that make you feel dizzy and then you learn to like the way it feels.” Bono heard that Edge missed his solo for a second night, but the audience was none the wiser as the band just carried on playing the song without the Edge’s recently developed solo for the song. If you notice, Edge’s guitar playing became very sloppy towards the end, as he was already very agitated and annoyed at himself. He threw the guitar down and kicked it, figuring it would be edited out from any released video. When The Edge met with his band mates and their managers, they convinced him to sign off on releasing the producers, thereby, granting them permission to include that moment in the concert DVD. They felt it helped “humanize” them a bit more to their audience.

@alexandriaocasio-smollett50782 ай бұрын
Good eye. It could be. But if I had to guess, I think it’s a sound sync issue. Considering this video is comprised of recordings mixed from 2 separate shows over 2 days(as best evidenced by Edge’s Rickenbacker alternating between black and red throughout this video😂), I think its more likely a sync issue. But I could be totally wrong and you could be right.

I feel similarly skeptical to you Edge being mad at Larry because he ended the song early doesn’t seem like the explanation. But in the behind the scenes/DVD extras it shows Edge, immediately after throwing and kicking his guitar, dart over to Larry and start screaming at him. So while I’m not absolutely convinced that’s the explanation, I do think its possible. Link in case you haven’t seen it.. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4SnaayhhdKSerssi=IHy3Qz5tOj3wTdTs

Yes. He was pissed off at Larry because he entered the outro before Edge wanted him to. In the behind the scenes DVD extras from this concert, they show him immediately after slamming and kicking his guitar dart over to Larry and start screaming at them. I’ve never seen Edge angry like that before. We’ve all seen Bono and Larry angry. Adam seems way to chill to let anything bother him. But yeah it was surprising to see Edge angry.
