Resin pigments are expensive so thank you for this video!

This is amazing! I was about to throw out my 88 colour eyeshadow palette that I’ve only used once but saw this. I ordered my first set of resin and mould but have no pigments yet. After watching this I now have 88 colours to use!
@amethyst18264 жыл бұрын
Yup. Probably not as strong in colour as actual pigments made for resin but they are definitely a good thing to start with, and cheap enough to buy. And ask your friends for their unwanted make-up to save more money.

When I first started, I tried Kool-aid, powdered cheese, cocoa, fingernail polish, makeup. They all work as long as you don't use too much.

@@NumberOneDragon Powdered cheese? That is not one I'd have thought of. Tho I can understand Kool-Aid as I've seen people dye their hair with that stuff!

@@amethyst1826 Really anything in powdered form except gun powder. Lol. Anything affected by heat. Just can't add too much of any additives or it will change the chemical reactions.

As someone who uses makeup, lightly scraping the makeup onto a piece of paper or a tissue ahead of time would work better. As a resin artist, adding it in small increments until you get your preferred saturation would conserve your pigments. As a Dollar Tree aficionado, grabbing the loose powder eyeshadows works even better although they make fewer colors. You just pop the bottom off and instant mica powder. Glitter is glitter, whether you buy it from Dollar Tree or some expensive boutique-with the sole exception of biodegradable glitter, which is better for the planet.

They look just as good as the expensive pigments! I never buy the expensive glitter, dollar store and Michaels look exactly the same as the pricey kind, now I’ll be trying some eyeshadow too. Thanks for the info!

I've been doing this for years to either create a custom shade and/ or to get rid of eyeshadows and powder highlighters that I never use and were only going to be thrown away and wasted anyway. Most eyeshadows are mostly mica with other additives anyway so if you have some cheap, crappy or old makeup lying about that's destined for the bin don't chuck it use it in place of plain mica which can be expensive and often a pain in the butt that requires a specialty shop for hobbies, arts and crafts etc.

In the eyeshadow area there are also little containers about two inches tall, they come in Gold, Purple, Pink, While, And black. The inside is loose powder, and they work like Mica pigments.

Make-up, especially eyeshadows/powders are mica powders. They may not be as strong as the actual mica powders sold for use in resin, but they definitely save us a whole load of money when we're starting out, and you can stick to these if you prefer!! Ask your friends & family for their old make-up, buy 2nd hand online, get cheap at Superdrug and £/$ shops. Don't put in too much glitter or it will take a lot longer to cure! 😆😆

I only use eye shadows from the dollar tree in my resin projects. The loose powders are best. When using the pallets you have to be sure to crush it up good or it'll cure with chunks. I usually use a tiny mixing spoon to scrape it in...

I use eyeshadow and glitter a lot and they mix really well. Eyeshadow is mainly mica so you will get the same effect. I don't know why your glitter wasn't mixed with the eyeshadow, that looked strange. Going right back to the 1970's I used eyeshadow as paint when making cards

They came out very well. What will you do with them now? I have been making sample dots with all my various alcohol inks and colorants, using a half sphere silicon mold. I have also found a gemstone shaped silicone mold at my local craft store which I might use int he future since I can make more than 6 at a time, which is all the spheres I can do at once. I thin glue them to a piece of foam filled craft board, the kind used for science fair projects and which I cut tot he size of a notebook. They are numbered on the front, and the numbers and named of the colorant are printed out and glued to the back. Makes for a great reference when doing projects. p.s. Blue-green is usually called "teal" and brownish-red is mauve. :) Happy resining!

They are.. unless there's a color you can find in eyeshadows and you find that color of pigment online..
@ldyjewell4 жыл бұрын
‘Official’ pigments are (theoretically) certified for purity of color and amount of mica. Makeup contains less pure mica and more stuff to make it stay on skin while remaining safely non-toxic/non-absorbent. I wanna try lipstick as a colorant, personally. Loads of colors and shades there and should be a spread even at a dollar store

I have lots of leftover Holi powder, which I believe is a mix of powder pigment and cornstarch. Does anyone know if this would work in resin? Thank you.
@seventhstreetstudios55384 жыл бұрын
I believe it would. The minimal amount of cornstarch shouldn't be enough to affect the resin.
