Great discussion! I was hiking up a mountain a few years ago and hit the wall, thought I was gonna black out, so I pulled a CLIF bar out of my pocket and started nibbling it and taking sips of water and within a few minutes totally revived. It is amazing what a caloric recharge can do.

Amen. I've had experiences like that "hitting the wall."

I'm a long distance ultra light backer and have a few recommendations. The first is depending on a person's milage will really determine how many calories they need. I usually average 20 to 25 miles a day and just to maintain my weight I need about 5K calories a day. So I always take into consideration how much something weights and the calories I can get out of it. A couple of other food options that are inexpensive that you can probably find at the dollar store that are packed in calories are mac n cheese, knorr pasta and rice sides, couscous, ramen noodles, trail mix or gorp, dont laugh but pop tarts have an insane amount of calories for their weight, snickers are inexpensive power bars and always a moral booster for me, oatmeal packetss, a little bottle of olive oil that I use as a butter substitute 2 tablespoons are almost 120 calories, stuffing mix is light high in calories and high carbs, instant powdered mashed potatoes, tortillas wraps are a great substitute for bread and can be high in calories with you add things like peanut butter and honey, tuna packets, and the list goes on. Powder instant soups are also great options. To make a meal out of any of the above items you can spice it up with tuna, chicken packets, and jerky. That and you hit the nail on the head with peanut butter. Lots and lots of peanut butter :) Aftering resupplying I'll usually grab some cheese and smoked some sausage and eat that while I'm heading out of town and back on the trail. As for drinks I usually always carry things that will keep my electrolytes in check to add to my water. Propel is a great option. That and I'll carry powdered milk and in the morning grab some really cold water out of a stream and eat a bowel of cereal sometimes. It's a great way of breaking up eating the common trail food and a moral booster. I also dont use any kind if canteen or water bladders. I usually just carry 2 smart water bottles that I'll grab in a town. Drink the water and just fill them back up while in on the trail. When I resupply I throw them in a recycling bin in a town and just replace them with new ones. I even managed to carry 2 for over 400 miles and never had a problem with them breaking or leaking on me. I finally ditched them though because they were getting really gross.

Thanks for the detailed write up. I have found that people do read the comments. So you are helping them with your real-life experience. I used to carry ramen, pop tarts (often the Dollar Tree fake pop tarts) etc but recently found I am better off without the gluten. A lot of people call Pop Tarts the "Poor Man's Energy Bar." LOL!

This guy is great! Lovin this. Hey $Store has like 6 spoons for $1.25 now. Before it was 3 for a $1. Also metal tin/dog bowls great for cooking etc. Saw a hack from bushcraft survival of using a bottle opener mod on the tin to create a handle....Family Dollar has good stainless steel bush pots. Love seeing Budget Dollar Tree survival hacks! On a small budget.

LOL! The only thing I can think of is a brain short circuit between "gallon freezer bag" and "five gallon bucket."

Couldn't agree more about the Sweet Tarts. #1 thing that will kill people faster than anything is morale. Something like Sweet Tarts can raise your spirits, improve morale and the courage to keep fighting. Also, a good bit of brain sugar to help make good survival decisions. Sit down, take a minute and have a few Sweet Tarts can make all the difference. Thanks for sharing!

I don't remember you really making too many meals in the woods. More cooking / overnight camping would be enjoyable.

Good stuff Brother! I love the truth about the candy! Also, eating fatigue can set in if you eat the same old stuff. Candy is perfect to help break that up and keep your calorie intake at optimal levels. :) Also some caffine pills or gum in your pack will help you stay awake in an emergency situation. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the kind words. I'm glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching. Yes I think caffeine pills are a great idea. I almost always have those individual packets of instant coffee. If for some reason I can't heat water, I've found that they do dissolve in cold water for ice coffee. But that's what I do for caffeine.

Thanks for commenting. Good point. Yes, a person should bring familiar foods on the trail- ones that he knows he can digest well. I went over this in the 1st Dollar Tree MRE video... kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnPQk4mOq81jea8
