I’m glad you made this video, Pam. I get a mixed array of comments. Most of my viewers say dollar tree seeds are great while an occasional comment says they never germinated for them and there was hardly any seeds in the pack. I opened up some packs yesterday and I found that to be wrong. This is a good video for people to see.! 👍👍👍 Liz

Yes, I had hundreds of success stories in comments then only 3 or so comments that they failed, which told me it was more a case of something else going wrong and not that the seeds were not viable. I had only one person so far complain of the smaller amount of seeds but many considered that a plus. Knowing they have less seeds in them tells me to buy more packs and I would have to buy up to 8 packs before I even reach the cost of others. That would be another good test.

I find that a lot of people just like to complain....many of them never even bought dollar tree seeds, they just form an opinion. I personally think for the price, if you get any germination at all, you won!!!
@rootelation486

@FlowerPatchFarmhouse im so confused as to how someone can complain about how many seeds are in 4/$1.25 seed packs.....when many of the big seed companies sell literally 5, 10 or 15 seeds and gardeners are willing to pay $4....and up for those varieties. Dollar tree is a great option for gardeners just getting started or those who just need to cut costs for whatever reason. I absolutely blew my seed budget this season, ordering from 9 mail order companies and still failing to pass up the seed racks at home depot and dollar tree

I had such beautiful results last summer from dollar tree gladiola bulbs. I planted them all in a large pot (that I bought from DT for $1.25) on my patio with zero expectation. I was shocked at how gorgeous and strong they were. I did have to stake and wrap with easy simple string support. They performed better than everything else. I had one of every color! ❤❤❤

You will fall in love with Sweet William , if you haven’t grown before. They are biennials, usually blooming the second year and then, they reliably reseed themselves forever. 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸They are the best cut flower. Thank you for the mention! 💕

Yes, I love sweet williams, they grow like weeds here and self seed everywhere. That may be not desirable to everyone but I love that I can just move them. I picked up this packet as my Sweet Williams that came up last year were all one color instead of a mix. I wanted more of the darker pink so picked up more seed. I had not thought about using them as a cut flower, good to know.

Nice to find your channel! Thanks for the coco core info. I’ve never had issue with their seeds. I have had issues with ones I’ve bought at Walmart & Royal King being a lack of seeds & colors not labeled correctly. The only negative on Dollar Tree seeds is variety but the cosmos grew 7’ tall in rich soil 💚
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse

Yes, the variety is limited but it seems different dollar stores do carry different varieties so I guess it is up to each stores management as to how many they order depending on display space. I don't have many DT stores near me, all are over an hours drive away but what I do find, I am pleased with.

I have grown a lot of the Dollar Tree vegetable seeds, I haven't tried the flowers yet. I got some seed packs last spring for 10cents each pack, when they were clearing out the garden stuff for the season. I am sowing some of those now, I am happy with the growth. They don't have a lot of variety of tomatoes, but I am happy with the basics. Good video!!

When we are on a very tight budget the basics are more than enough and usually they are of the tried and true varieties that are known to grow for most. That is one truth about gardening, finding contentment in growing the simplest of flowers and veggies. The joy is in growing.

Mini blind slats are good. The sun can fade the sharpie letters but they are usually ok for one season. I know a guy who has a printing shop who uses and then recycles aluminum sheets that have one side with a white plating and these can be written on with an ordinary pencil. They will be readable for years. If you have print shops in your area they will probably give or sell you a few of these cheap. I use a scissors to cut strips to whatever size I need.

Yes, all seeds available to the public are non-GMO except for one, which most folks don't know. The only GMO seeds available to the general public are the purple cherry tomato released last spring and you can only get them from one company. And it wasn't chemicals that was added, it was a cross with snapdragons that gave the higher antioxidant levels. I tried it, it grew fine and produced lots of tomatoes but the flavor was meh so I ended up giving most of them to the chickens.

Yes to slow gardening! We are in it for the long haul , here in the UK most people wouldn't seed start til March because of the low light levels as well as the cold temperature. A serious vegetable grower would plant garlic around the Winter Solstice and start onion seeds on Boxing day. (Maybe start chilli peppers in January but only if you have a heat mat and grow lights.) It' s fun to see what other people are doing around the world, but I have to not start anything as I don't have a greenhouse or polytunnel to put seedlings in. One year I forgot to pour boiling water over my potting mix and suffered with fungus gnats in my tomato plants. Which were residing on the kitchen table and thus putting off everyone from eating there! 😂 There are plenty of seed to harvest videos out there on YT for those with short attention spans. You do you , I like your chatty plant talk it's like hanging out with a garden friend.

When is your last frost date? The reason I ask is last year (with advice from another channel) he advised starting the cold weather crops 16 weeks before last frost and getting them out in the garden 8 weeks before. It really helped define a separate growing season for me here in western WA. The brassicas did really well.

@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse 6 сағат бұрын
That's a tough one as it is dependent on your climate and since we are usually covered in snow, growing flowers during winter isn't my strong suit. Well, in my greenhouse that is a different story. I can get away with a lot in there even though it isn't insulated. I don't have any right now. It isn't only the cold but the day length that effects bloom.

Hi Pam, I have to tell you that I have stratified seeds as fast as overnite or 24 hours in the fridge. I think poppies, larkspur and foxglove. I love those pink geraniums, no wonder you are propagating it! I think that I grew Alyssa and several seeds drop the dollar stores. I agree about quality. Unless you are a floral farmer, why do you need 200 seeds?
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Күн бұрын
I was eyeing that geranium for more cuttings, I do love the color and I think a large tub or container filled with them and alyssum this summer would be an eye catcher. Thanks for the info on your stratifying, yes some say certain seeds will do better if stratified but most will grow without it even if they prefer it. Poppies, larkspur and foxglove are direct sown in Fall for me so I haven't tried in containers. The one that popped up in the geranium cutting was not stratified at all and came up great. I am usually yanking larkspur out of areas I don't want it by the fists full in Spring. It is a prolific self seeder in my garden!

Does using a heat mat make any kind of a difference - other than germination speed - as far as strength of the plant goes? e.g. coping with temperature changes? Are there any other pros for using a heat mat. I've never used them. I have two Sunflowers that came up in the Petunias I brought in from outside. Should be interesting to see what happens. The comment about quality vs. quantity is completely true. I don't need to purchase 500 seeds of something if less than 1/2 are going to germinate. Besides, If 15 of something suffices my needs, why would I need 250 or more. If you buy a small quantity of a seed and it's a "Yes" for you, then you can always purchase more. Your greenhouse just gave me an idea for extra shelving. This year I am changing and going with Potting Soil instead of seed starting mix. Love your channel.
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse
@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Күн бұрын
I have learned that using a heat mat does not necessarily affect plant strength. It only speeds germination so I wouldn't bother if you don't have one. The sunflowers that have always done the most impressive in my garden are the ones the birds planted from the bird seed I have out. They are the Black Oil Sunflower seeds. I have found the potting soil more than sufficient for seed starting.
