I just wanted to clarify, the point that RGs aren’t stable or sturdy really only applies to older Real Grade kits. Anything after the RG Unicorn is incredibly solid, sturdy, and much less finicky. Great video!
@AggroNoobs2 күн бұрын
The comment on the Grade being the experience from the kit instead of the experience from the person is pretty spot on. I tend to stick to MG as I enjoy the mechanics, size and detail *and* all that gives me for customizing later. BUT I am not a stranger to just picking up a HG or even EG on the cheap and just relaxing with a little 40 minute, no nipper snap fest while chatting with buddies. With MG, I love that "woah" every time you see a limb come together and you can see the engineering come to life to make it articulate. With EG, I just wanna get cozy with some plastic and get in touch with my inner kinex/lego kid. And to anyone new to this side of the hobby reading this, welcome and have fun. That's what plamo's really all about. You can get some cheap side cutters, slap one together and be happy or you can go full on month long paint, decal, scribing, metal, detail up and modification job. Just find your fun with it and enjoy.

Probably worth noting that the newer Real Grade kits are WORLDS better experiences than the older ones. I started off with an RG RX-78-2 and it's exactly like you said; super fiddly, prone to falling apart and the joints are very loose. I just recently built the RG Epyon as my 2nd kit and the difference is night and day.
@canuckchuck88362 күн бұрын
100% The perfect grades are all about the build experience. So much of the detail is hidden under the armor. You have to get one of the 1:48 scale kits if you have not already. Not super-detailed but freaking huge! The mega-size Unicorn beam rifle will not fit in 90% of the regular kit boxes.

Another Gundam series I'd recommend, also available for free here on KZbin, is The 08th MS Team. Not only does it give you a glimpse into the lives of soldiers on both sides of the war, and people caught in the middle, it also gives you a taste of just how far the higher-ups are willing to go to win it. It's my favorite UC story (Universal Century, the main Gundam storyline) and I recently finished my first Master Grade, the Ez8 from that series.
@davidchristie12002 күн бұрын
Really nice video - with Real Grades, the early ones suffered from bandai making use of the MS frame sprue - the inner frame of the suit molded onto a single frame, which is an engineering marvel but suffers in stability and wear and tear, Recent RG's are now like mini master grades (unicorn Gundam onwards) and have ditched the MS frame sprue for a more traditional buildable inner frame, the Hi Nu Gundam RG is widely regarded as one of the best kits Bandai has produced - so maybe give that a go - or they have just released the RX78-2 2.0 which is worth looking at.

" *Postwar Confessions* " That's one of the best understandings I've seen of the oft-overlooked aspects of these 1980's anime. Parallels of the Axis, the Allies. Of surrender, societal changes and fighting against a power structure, as a young rebel no less. From Starblazers to Zeta Gundam.. I should have started with an "A" anime I guess. I always correlated the Grade, with the scale of the model. HG being my favorite at 1/144.

Personal tip from someone who just got into the hobby. Get a Witch From Mercury (TWFM)gunpla. Some of the older kits have terrible build problems and they degrade over time. (Emphasis on the SOME). I think its because of the polly caps degrading over time, even if they are not yet built. TWFM sets dont use polly caps and thay are sturdy for people who want to pose their sets doing battle.

@Cheesebread422 күн бұрын
@6:40 I wouldn't refer to Witch From Mercury etc. as "soft reboots" rather they're "Alternate Universe" AUs or Alternate Timelines, You can watch them entirely on they're own but not canonically meant to 'replace' anything that comes before. This also goes for other AUs like Gundam Wing, Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Gundam SEED, Gundam 00, etc. etc. etc.; the oldest and original 'timeline' is the Universal Century, that Mobile Suit Gundam is based on. Turn A Gundam and the "Dark Timeline" narrative try to tie it all together, over an unfathomably long span of time, but I wouldn't get hung up on that. Witch From Mercury is still an awesome place to jump on. As are any of the other AUs, like Gundam 00 or Gundam SEED, it's just about what appeals to you. This took me a long time to figure out after watching Gundam SEED which felt like a Reboot of the original, but in general, it's not, and the original show is well worth watching and has some really classic vibes. If the animation of the original is 'too old' for folks, then Gundam Unicorn (OVA ver.) is the best jumping in point for Universal Century that I have found, or "Gundam the Origin," though there's a lot of controversy over how much of The Origin is canon (meh, enjoy it).

Only a few dozen Real Grade kits have been made over the history of the line so far. They are all numbered. The oldest kit is the OG gundam, the RX-78-2 -- don't get this or some of the older kits, in fact I have been told to avoid the RGs made before an including the RG unicorn, because they are quite fragile and have a tendency to 'hand grenade' losing bits everywhere. The absolute king of RG right now is the newly released RX-78-2 Ver. 2.0, which lo and behold, is a complete redo of the 1st RG kit, from the ground up, it's a true beast, it's really like having a 1/144 scale perfect grade unleashed, and the kit truly represents the state of the art, everyone in the hobby should try this kit out. Some of the other more recent RG kits like Epyon, God Gundam and Shining Gundam (coming soon), are also well recommended. The Entry Grade Strike Gundam in my opinion is a fantastic first kit for someone to try, and there are entry grade option parts you can buy for it as well (its special weapon loadouts)

1/100 is the best kits to get into I think if you get into gunpla, MG, Ver Ka., Full Mechanics, and even a couple third party kits that make 1/100 are pretty decent too. RG was way to underwhelming for how small they are, the mechanics and articulation in them are top notch though. HG's are great for getting a kit for a mobile suit that isn't available in other grades. For anyone wanting to build a PG for the first time I would definitely recommend an older RX-78(not pgu) or Zaku. They are eye opening for what to expect from a perfect grade. I have several that I am slightly intimidated to attempt after building the RX-78, the bigger kit also means bigger nubs to cut and refine to look good. Great video, really chill and informative.

It's worth noting that earlier models in a grade/line can tend to be less poseable/detailed compared to their later counterparts which can sometimes end up with HGs being equally or more detailed than their MG counterpart. So that's something to watch out for. Some MGs and RGs (MG Gelgoog 2.0 and RG Zaku II for example) can also be more complex compared to some of their HG counterparts but the complexity can sometimes feel a bit overdone like it's just there for complexity's sake to check off a box. Overall some of my favourite HG lines are the Revive line and Gundam The Origin line. Imo the best RG, bar none, is the Zeong.

Unfortunately that moving statue is no longer a thing, but the statue is now part of their Gundam Next Future project where it exists as a solar panel array in a static pose. As far as the real grades go, valid critique. I am wondering if you tried any of the newer ones from the past couple of years, as the B frame has largely been omitted in favor of a more master grade like inner frame.

But ironically I bought my little nephew two of the beginner gunpla's... and then the Canada Post strike happened and now they are stuck in an airport and most likely wont be delivered for Christmas or afterwards since talks are breaking down again.

There was backlash indeed! But my most successful video ever is also a Gundam one! Baha

Bonus tip: gunpla technology has advanced a lot in the 21st century. I tried a Gundam Wing kit from the late '90s, and it was not nearly as slick and enjoyable.

Sorry to disappoint, but the 1:1 animated Gundam was retired back in March 2024. For wargamers, I recommend Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. I also unironically enjoy Mobile Build Fighters because it's not about angsty pilots - it's about people you build and play wargames with their GunPla! 🤖🤖🤖

For Real Grades, they’ve had a pretty bad name in the fiddliness of the early ones (Zaku that you’ve built). This line has gone through pretty much a revolution since. I’d encourage to give it another chance-the recent reboot of the RG RX-78-2 2.0 is a fantastic kit, though my favourites along that line are the Sazabi, Hi-Nu/Nu and Zeong.

I can suggest Iron Blooded Orphans, one of the best series and one of the most brutal. (also free on youtube on gundaminfo) In a way cheaper universe there is the new Bandai model kit line called 30 Minute Missions, easy kit to build (in 30 minute missions) often easier than an High Grade, cheap (here in Italy but with so few parts can be cheap everywhere), with option amors, option weapons, decal and interchangeability between kits, even high grade and are like Lego Bionocle... rip wallet Master Grade ver Ka are different version than a normal MG, it stands for "Version Katoki", Hajime Katoki is a god-like designer who rework some gunplas,often older kits to get a renew version of it like a recent Gundam Z. Some MGs have also a treatment like 1.5,2.0 and 3.0 like Grandaddy RX-78-2, with more complex version, but "less anime accurate" with the 3.0 that was ispired by the other Giant Gundam they did some years ago. As you can image, i like Master Grades. If i can suggest one MG, the Barbatos one is awesome, after watching IBO, of course.

If you want to game with your Gundam models, there are a few rule sets out there that are quite entertaining.

6:15 - The only thing I remember from it was in the first episode where the MC told that girl he wanted to kill her after she greeted him nicely, which I thought at the time was incredibly silly. Beyond that it didn't leave much of an impression on younger me. I did give the Witch From Mercury a shot, but it couldn't hold my interest past a few episodes. I do remember there was a more grounded Gundam ('realistic') show I liked, but I can't remember what it was. This might all be my preference for Battletech style big stompy robots coming out, although I do like Robotech, so...

That's the first episode of Gundam Wing. Unfortunately, the dub suffers very heavily from being 'sanitized' for acceptability by censors of the time. The grounded one you may have enjoyed might be 08th MS Team, which is set in the Universal Century timeline - the 'original' Gundam timeline - and focuses primarily on ground-based combat with mobile suits.

Its important to note that Bandai and their Designers DO get better over time. This is very noticeable in the RG and PG, line so try to find newer kits in those grades. also use DALONG to check.
