Best part of this story is that her and Porter Wagner, whom she wrote this song for, had a falling out afterward and he was pretty terrible to her. Years later he was in major financial trouble and the IRS seized all his property, including his entire song catalogue. Dolly went to the IRS auction and purchased the entire catalogue, then gave it back to him for free. Shows that she truly meant every word of this song!

She wrote this for Porter Wagoner. She didn't know how to tell him she was leaving the show, so instead, she sang it to him in his office. Throughout the years, he sued her, to which she just responded by giving him a million dollars and continued to care for him. He blew all the money by partying, and tried to sue her again for a catalogue of music she owned. Instead of getting mad and fighting it, Dolly just said, "You can have it all for free". She took care of that man for decades, despite how awful he was to her, and she even went to his death bed and sang to him, holding his hand and keeping him company. This is the essence of unconditional love and the story of her great character. When she said, "I Will Always Love You", she meant it. No matter what he did, no matter how much he failed, she continued to love him until his dying day. Dolly Parton is an incredibly wonderful person.

I didn't know this song was from Dolly Parton until today... In my opinion, Witney sings this song with passion and power, wich is great because shows her vocals strenght, and thus makes the song more remarkable, but on the other hand, Dolly sings with such tenderness that made the lyrics go much deeper. I never really cared for the lyrics at all, just to the way Witney sings them, but listening to Dolly almost made me cry! I love Witney, but this is another level right here...

I think Whitney did it better, as you can tell by the sells. Whitney made it famous. Clearly Whitney's version has way more vocals and is also way harder to sing so I would say no one can sing this song like Whitney. Dolly even said that.

+Slay Queen That is just another opinion, nothing more. Justin Bieber sold a crap ton of records but his music is cheap pop garbage. Sales number do no automatically reflect the quality of music. They are usually a result of popularity, which is a result of which artists are chosen by the record companies to get the most airtime. That is how it typically works in the industry.

I love both versions equally - they're both interpreted in such different ways they feel like two different songs. Whitney's version is almost a bold proclamation with confidence while Dolly's feels more personal and vulnerable - like someone broken. How amazing that we have two amazing versions by two incredible women to represent different emotions depending on where we all are at a specific time in our lives. We should just be grateful rather than bitch about whose is better.
@arabellainterstellar83217 жыл бұрын
Kate C I agree. You can't compare two emotions. Whitney's is supposed to be empowering, and Dolly's is all about exposing and vulnerability. Its like comparing Pasta with Pizza and George RR Martin with Tolkein. Both extremely good in what they're doing and very different works.
@eightball80087 жыл бұрын
that is true.. but whitney's version is too powerful she unleashes her voice on us and it's overwhelming.. i like the point about the interpretation. whitney's version is much more declarative like she's asserting her love.. whereas dolly's is softer and is either a fading reminder to someone who forgot.. or an almost painful elegy to her beloved :'( fucking beautiful
