Chorus:
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

What I love about this song is that she’s not like “fuck off you ugly bitch” she’s recognising her beauty but also expressing her insecurity about how fragile love is. It’s a very tender song but a powerful exclamation of her emotions.

I'm an old guy, and it's amazing how the younger people analyze this song, and don't understand the ethos of the time and place it was written. The Judaeo-Christian ethic permeated the entire culture then. Divorce was seen as a tragedy. Marriage meant children. And women accepted the idea of one man for each woman. The narrator is appealing to Jolene to do the right thing, and not use her beauty and allure for evil....breaking another woman's heart, and breaking up her home. She reminds Jolene that Jolene will have no problem finding the right man, and that HER man is not him. She doesn't threaten or scold Jolene, but appeals to her sense of dignity and conscience.....and allows Jolene to meditate on that.....and the karma that could return to her if she continues in this direction. It's an incredible song, telling a multi-layered song in only 132 words.....
@REDNOVA1
@REDNOVA1 Күн бұрын
So you mean, let’s say she told her husband that she didn’t think that cause the time in that era was like, fucked, and then everybody was like, Jolene… don’t you go there girl! And they she was in a jam as she’d have to decide which way things should go? Like that?

I think the best part of this song is how she doesn't blame Jolene for anything. It's not mad at her. She's like girl you are gorgeous you could have any man you want it's just that I only want this one. And you haven't flirted with him you're not trying to take him away but he's got this hang up on you and I'm just asking you politely to make sure he knows that you're not available. We need more like that.

It's a real shame that the vast majority have no idea of her talent as a songwriter and performer. When she was a rising star, the media did everything they could to belittle her. She was mocked and degraded because of the shape of her body. For every wonderful thing she did they found an equal number of ways to tear her down and portray her as nothing but a sex symbol. Disgusting. I hope she gets her true due someday.

My grandad absolutely adored this woman. What a voice and such a sad yet beautiful song written in the moment she almost lost her man. My grandad lost his woman to another man and was left to pick up the pieces and I like to think he found a lot of security and common ground with this song. Or maybe he wished he had that love in return. I'd love to know how he felt and what he was thinking while listening to this song. He deserved someone who loved him as much as Dolly loved her husband. I Love this song it reminds me so much of my grandad and it's a really genuine and lovely song. I Think about you everyday grandad. Even more when I listen to your Dolly. Love you.

The thing is Dolly is begging Jolene no to take her man cause she's just a woman who wants to have a family against the beautiful Jolene who has the beauty to take him any time while Beyoncé is warning Becky not to come again like she did or she won't live in peace like 10 years ago cause she is Beyoncé and has the ability to threat her live. My puppy, Jolyne Kujo, died earlier this morning. The worst part is that we don't even know the real reason why she died and I was powerless against the pain she was feeling while she was on the verge of death all because we couldn't go to the vet for pandemic reasons. Last night, my brother and I cried so hard while we watched her last moments alive. I held her little paw on my hand and I told her quietly that it's okay to go. If that's how it is... I'm okay with it. I'll see you when the universe resets, my sweet Jolyne.

Love how this song beautifully depicts how deeply dolly understands Jolenes appeal. It’s not that she’s in love with her (as some have asserted) but when your in love with someone who is in love with someone else- they haunt you. This song is a reflection of that jealousy that all woman can feel when a more beautiful women is a threat. She’s a women obsessed, defeated, desperate. Such a wonderful song that gives goosebumps especially that 🪘 beat…. Mimicking a racing heart… the urgency and desperation she’s feeling.

+C Cornwall It actually is based on true events. The inspiration for the song was from when Dolly met a little girl who fit the physical description of Jolene in the song and the girl said her name was Jolene. Also, the whole stealing her man was a woman who went after Dolly's husband. So it is partially true

Dolly Parton, this song is the 1 that shook me down into how a real song so well composed is what was my reason to do music, as a child. It cemented my mind on what a true great sounding song can make everybody pause, stop talking and listen to it, with reverence. Like a really great inspirational hymnal, Welsh of course😂❤ But cutesome voice, and no way could anyone ever be as great as the lady who penned this, I love you sweets .
