Chorus:
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I'm begging of you please don't take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don't take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

What I love about this song is that she’s not like “fuck off you ugly bitch” she’s recognising her beauty but also expressing her insecurity about how fragile love is. It’s a very tender song but a powerful exclamation of her emotions.

@@thepcenthusiastchannel2300 never said comparing wasn't good but doing it to downgrade something else is. Mind you both versions are based on real event : Beyoncé with "Becky with the good hair" and Dolly with Jolene which is why in Dolly P from Beyoncé you hear Dolly P saying to Beyoncé that Becky reminded her someone she knew from à similar situation. The thing is Dolly is begging Jolene no to take her man cause she's just a woman who wants to have a family against the beautiful Jolene who has the beauty to take him any time while Beyoncé is warning Becky not to come again like she did or she won't live in peace like 10 years ago cause she is Beyoncé and has the ability to threat her live. Bet HAD to change it up..for one..to fit today's vernacular and two...I'm assuming she didn't wanna make it about a Becky(Dolly's description is definitely Becky) but make it general..aka ANY woman..n her being her..she wasn't n shouldn't be sayn the other jawn looked better or she can take her man .sexing him not necessarily taking him...she HAD to make it fit modern times and fit her image story..just like this one fit Dolly's story at the time.i like both versions..I'm just here cuz l forgot how it sounded..plus they BOTH gonna come up off this song...many gonna like Beyonce version(not cuz it's better just cuz they like it n can probably even relate) n BOTH her n Dolly will benefit..the changes alone I believe gives her writing credits so either way(even w/o writing credits) they both eat n it revives the original..double bubble for dolly.win win..n if we recall when her n Jay went thru whatever it was..he spoke about his infidelity and how he did what he did cuz of his issues .n how therapy helped sort that stuff out..n how she helped him by being patient knowing his issues n them work. Thru the bs..so when she says she raised him up..hey.lol

Wonderful lyrics + melody. English is not my mother tongue (i am Austrian and we speak German), and whey i first heard this in my youth i almost started crying. It immediately provoced emotions, sympathy and empathy towards a FRAGILE woman addressing her competitor who threatens here love, life and family. She does not start a littigation or fight, she openly begs the competitresse not to take her man away although she could. Straight forward, open hearted and open minded. Trying to solve a looming problem and danger without escalation.

In an interview she says that Jolene was a little girl who looks exactly like she described in the song. This girl was a fan who jumped on the stage to meet Dolly. Dolly said "You are the most beautiful thing i have ever seen. What's your name?" She said "Jolene" Then Dolly said "Oh I know! Your father's name must be Joe and they named you after him." And Jolene responded "No... Just Jolene." And Dolly said " Jolene. I will write a song about you and you will think of this if you hear it anywhere." Search it on youtube. I watched the interview. Maybe she connected Jolene's beauty to what she experiences with her husband?

Its obvious that the man is the issue, that is not the point of the song. She is probably not at the point in her life where she can accept that. The only thing she can think of is the heartbreak if he left. Avoiding that pain causes her to forsake every drop of pride she has left. I think we can all imagine her leaving that dude down the road when she realizes just how much she is worth. This is not that day.

I think the best part of this song is how she doesn't blame Jolene for anything. It's not mad at her. She's like girl you are gorgeous you could have any man you want it's just that I only want this one. And you haven't flirted with him you're not trying to take him away but he's got this hang up on you and I'm just asking you politely to make sure he knows that you're not available. We need more like that.

I'm a man and if a man has already had someone and still fall for others... That's messed up. He doesn't love you anymore. If a girl already knows that and still want him back, that girl is broken... too broken... If i ever loved another person when i have my gf who loves me to this point, i'm a terrible human being. No excuses for another girl being more beautiful or something. Honestly, he probably saved her from hell if she's still yearn for him after all of that.
