Lyrics:
Islands in the stream
That is what we are
No one in between
How can we be wrong
Sail away with me
To another world
And we rely on each other, huhn hah
From one lover to another, huhn hah

The love song was inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same name. I'm from Venezuela, I grew up on the beach speaking Spanish, and I once fell in love with a man who speaks English and grew up in the mountains of West Virginia, and this song makes me miss what never happened, without even having been to his place yet. hometown I already loved West Virginia because I felt it through him, and when I finally went I knew that was the life I wanted, him, the mountains, children playing in the forest, him hunting in the mornings and me waiting for him with lunch Ready, but God had different plans for both of us, and yes, sometimes I miss that life that never happened. and when I listen to this song and close my eyes it takes me for a while to that life that never happened...

One of the few fond memories of church camp, driving from Flaming Gorge back to Northern Utah. We were in a 15 passenger van with a total of 10 people in the vehicle, and our leader had a CD with this on it. All 10 people were singing this at the top of our lungs with no regard for anything else. Every time I hear it come on, I get that little boost of serotonin, and everything seems a little brighter.

It doesn't seem possible that this song was released 37 years ago. Does it? At the time that I first heard it, I was a 22-year-old college student driving home from school & it came on the radio. It made me think of a nursing student that I was seeing at the time. Now? It makes me think of my wife who can sing a pitch-perfect version of it when the mood strikes her. Which is sort of odd because she was only a year old in 1983. But her parents used to listen to a lot of Dolly while she was growing up. Anyhow, yeah, 37 years, my friends. Wow.

I just saw an interview with Kenny for the Professor of Rock. He told the story that he was in the studio trying to record it but wasn't feeling it and said to Barry Gibb (who wrote it) that he didn't even like the song anymore. Barry said in reply that they really needed Dolly Parton. As it happened, Kenny's manager had just seen Dolly downstairs so he went and got her. The song was never the same.

Dolly won the 2001 GRAMMY Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her cover of the Collective Soul song "Shine" from her album "Little Sparrow," marking her third win in that category and seventh overall. Collective Soul lead singer Ed Roland was blown away when he found out Dolly covered the group’s song, "In all honesty, the first CD, which has 'Shine' on it, basically was a songwriter's demo, trying to get a publishing deal and try to showcase songs. It's the first time ever we've had one of those songs covered, and it's an honor, and really cool... especially coming from someone who's a great songwriter. It's not necessary for her to use anyone's songs except her own."
