Dolly Parton is a very multi-talented artist. Not only is she an incredible singer and songwriter, she's a very smart business woman. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock & Roll himself, wanted to record her hit song "I Will Always Love You". To any songwriter that would be a dream come true, but Dolly had to say no because he also wanted to take some of the publishing money. Thankfully, the song got another incredible recording when several years later Whitney Houston recorded it and made it her own while still sending the checks to Dolly.

Dolly Parton is currently ( March 2022 ) on the Rock n Roll Hall of fame pre-ballot. To make it to the final ballot she has to be among the top five vote-getters. Theres about a dozen on the pre-ballot and Parton is fourth. That's way too close to falling off the ballot. I'm going to the rock hall website to vote for her now. All you need is a valid email address and you can vote also. To me it's a no-brainer to elect her but apparently not enough people feel the same way. Shes had over 100 songs on the country charts and 25 of those on the pop charts. This particular song was number one 3 times in three different decades. In 74 and 82 for Dolly and 92 for Whitney Houston. By the way I was born and raised in the city and know less country music than most other forms of popular music. But I like to think I have good taste in music and I know when I hear someone special and Dolly is special.

Most of the people don’t even know she’s the author of the original song... and she don't give a fuck. Dolly’s genius is that she made millions of dollars from selling the rights to the song, but that song really stays hers forever. Because what comes from you. From your soul. From your heart. From your mind. It can't be someone else's. It will always be just a "HUGE multi-platinum" copy.

I am impressed with Ms. Parton's realism and humility. Personally, Ms. Parton's is my favorite version. Sure, Whitney Houston's has what I call "vocal gymnastics". For me personally, with Ms. Houston's version, my attention is drawn to the vocal gymnastics. WIth Ms. Parton's version, my attention is drawn to the underlying feelings of the song, and the feelings and message of the song fit EXACTLY to a particular episode of my life. I could not ask for a song to be more fitting. So for me, Ms. Parton's version is far more impactful and fitting.
