Wikipedia-When O'Riordan was auditioned as the lead singer for the band, she wrote the lyrics, turning it into a song of regret based on an experience with a 17-year-old soldier she once fell in love with. Drummer Fergal Lawler recalled the process in an interview, saying: It was a Sunday afternoon. She arrived with a keyboard under her arm, just set it up and played a few songs. We couldn't really hear her because she was singing through a guitar amp or something. I gave her a lift up to the bus stop and I was saying, 'Will we see you next week?' We gave her a tape of the music for 'Linger', which she took with her. The following week she came back, and she had lyrics written out and melodies and she sang along to what we were playing, and it was like, 'Oh, my God. She's great'. In the documentary '99 Love Life & Rock 'n' Roll, O'Riordan says that the song is about her first serious kiss.

The first song she wrote for the Cranberries. They gave her a melody and asked her to write some lyrics as part of her audition. Song about a boy who was her first kiss and first boyfriend. Sometime after that they broke up. He was military.

I heard it was more that she was really into him, but he wasn’t as into her and when he kissed her, he lingered, which made her completely fall in love. I could be wrong, but I’m interested to know.

@robertboyd4220 I have heard it a couple of ways...the one you mentioned also included that the same guy she kissed was seen hanging out with one of Dolores's friends showing her more attention. This left her out. The interview I saw with her detailed the boyfriend and first kiss.

Dolores O' Riordan was only 18 when she joined The Cranberries in 1989... She died at age 46 in 2018 😪 Her voice was instantly recognizable and she could yodel, sing in soprano and sing rock music w/ force. The Cranberries' debut album "Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we" was released in 1993 and took a year to sell w/ massive singles - 'Dreams'... and 'Linger'... the album sold 5x platinum in the US... 'Dreams' is still used in movies and commercials. 2nd album 'No need to argue' was released in 1994 and it sold 7x platinum in the US (17 million copies worldwide) w/ major hits like - 'Zombie'... 'Ode to my family' ... "I can't be with you"... 🔥🔥 The Cranberries' 3rd album 'To the faithfully departed' in 1996 charted at #4 in the US but took some of the backlash against 90's alternative rock... it sold 2x platinum w/ hits like "When you're gone" ... 'Salvation'. 4th album 'Bury the hatchet' sold gold in the US (half million copies) in 1999... 5th album 'Wake up and smell the coffee' in 2001 failed commercially selling 170K units in the US... The Cranberries broke up soon after. Dolores O' Riordan released 2 solo albums in 2007 and 2009... neither were commercially successful. She finally reunited w/ The Cranberries to tour in 2009 and recorded new music ... Unfortunately, she had personal problems... divorced in 2014... arrested after an episode... diagnosed w/ bi-polar disorder in 2015... She was struggling in 2017 w/ back problems as she worked on a new Cranberries album. Dolores O' Riordan died drowning in her hotel bathtub from alcohol intoxication in early 2018... (R.I.P.) She was due to put her vocals on a cover of 'Zombie' by the band Bad Wolves (The cover single was released in her honor) In 2019, The Cranberries released their 8th and final album 'In the end' w/ Dolores' vocals and announced that the band was over without her.

TLDR: Songs to check out include ... • Wicked Game (Chris Isaak) • No Ordinary Love (Sade) • Colorblind (Counting Crows) • Pretty (Cranberries) • Round Here (Counting Crows) • The Great Gig In the Sky (Pink Floyd) When I was a youngin', many moons ago, I was friend zoned for the first time. During those times that were the worst to endure emotionally, I would listen to a mixtape I made that included No Ordinary Love by Sade, Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, Linger by Cranberries, and Round Here by Counting Crows. Very cathartic. 😋 The other songs above are also emotional. The Pink Floyd tune, in particular, is unparalleled. It features wordless vocals by a woman named Clare Torry, who was just told to improvise to the music in a way that expresses what it might feel like to die and transition to an afterlife. What you hear on the studio recording was done in just two takes and can shake you to your core. The live performances are decent, but it's never Clare, and no one has ever come close to matching what she originally did.
