The Boston Celtics have one one championship since 1986, and no titles since the 2008 super team despite frequently hanging near the top of things.
Today I examine a timeline of how that's happened over the last 15+ years.

Considered too goofy, media people like JA Adande never like him. Shaq didn't like him because of the Superman thing. Then eliminates Cavs at 2009 to ruin Kobe-LeBron matchup at Finals, Cavs won +60 games and were favorites to win the title. Eliminates Nike guy as an Adidas guy. Ruins a moment for industry/media. Then his back injuries messed with his performance. Media constantly throwing stones to him. The nail in the coffin was his fallout with Kobe in 2013. His time with Rockets was OK, but he got old and slower. Media never forgave him.
@Amm17ar
@Amm17ar 5 ай бұрын
His resume is better than a lot of NBA players who made the list.....including Damian Lillard especially. No disrespect to Dame, but his career wasnt even close to being over, had never achieved anything in the playoffs and the only thing hes ever won individually was the ROY. Dwight had and still has more All-NBA selctions, more defensive teams (obviously), 3 DPOYs, had a Championship at that point, and more All-Stars at that point. Theres no way Dwight didnt deserve a spot over him at least. He had a chance to make the next 25.....I think they did a lot of players dirty. The players who were still active in or around their peaks shouldnt have been included. Guys like Davis, Giannis, Lillard and arguably Westbrook (I understand easy to say that without taking into account his past few seasons which didnt happen when they chose the list, so hes arguable to me, I think he might have deserved a spot based on what he already had done) shouldnt have been included. They had a pretty good chance of making the 100th aniversary team. Guys like Howard, Pau, Mcgrady (arguable, he didnt achieve much team success nor individual accolades in fairness), Bosh, and Parker all deserved spots over those guys imo.
@ValentineCorp
@ValentineCorp 5 ай бұрын
@Amm17ar agreed about Howard, Westbrook and Lilard, although I’d say Giannis should still have made it even then, also Bosch too, with maybe Gasol not as I’d still put Giannis or Bosch>Gasol at that point in time

@CrazyxEnigma 5 ай бұрын
@@Amm17ar I'm not upset at Davis and Giannis being included. Shaq was put in the top 50 list despite having only been in the league for three seasons at the time and not many people argued it. Lillard though? Not deserving especially over the players listed.

The ringless gap for Boston between 1987-2007 also had a lot of interesting and unfortunate things occur. Bird's back falling apart, Len Bias dying unexpectedly, McHale and Parish aging out, Reggie Lewis dying unexpectedly, missing out on Kobe, T-Mac, and some other great draft talents, the Pitino GM and coach error, the short-lived duo of Pierce and Walker, Tony Allen's torn ACL, and probably some other things I missed.

I wouldn't feel bad for celtics fans. Mid to late 90s was bad but there were some fun teams during early pierce years. Some franchises go really long stretches without doing anything to remain competitive. Celtics for the most part have had good ownership and gm

Agreed. I think we've officially reached the point of "championship or bust" with the Celtics. If another season goes by without banner 18, then it's time to start wondering if this team is ever going to win one. As the team already locked up Brown to a long-term deal, if the team doesn't win it all this season, do they still lock Tatum to a long-term deal next summer?

Great video man. Growing up in New England, I started watching the Cs in 93, a year after Larry retired and Reggie Lewis died. I mostly watched the mediocre Celtics as a way to see other teams play, as back then there were only a couple nationally televised games a week, but soon came to love the "hometown" team. Aside from the miraculous conference finals run in 2002, it was a *very* rough stretch between 93 and 2008. The past decade has been marred by a plethora of bad breaks, freak injuries and atrocious luck, especially considering the teams mascot is named Lucky. Now I just pray that this current team stays healthy for a couple years and finally hoists a couple more banners. We certainly deserve it.

I'm surprised that you skipped over the 12-3 record the Celtics had in the 2019 season without Kyrie. The team looked GREAT in that stretch. Tatum, Brown, Horford, Hayward, Rozier, and Smart all were putting up better numbers on better efficiency with the ball popping on offense and great rotations on defense. It would have been really interesting if the Celtics just shut Kyrie down at that point knowing that he was going to leave. It might have helped them retain Horford in the offseason and give them a better chance against the Bucks in 2019.

Then to pull it off consistently, which is even harder. I feel there’s a lot to knock Lebron for, but his playoff record isn’t it.

I think young hoop fans don’t understand how good that 08 Celtics and 09 Celtics teams were. They didn’t come up short, they were hindered by injury. It was the first time you could say the team had legitimately a top 10 player on the roster KG that could win MVP for a long time. Thats why that title is celebrated by the fans and group. Being young during that period you probably wouldn’t appreciate it and look at it through contrasted lens. In short Bostons lack of a title in 36 years isn’t because they didn’t try or complete ineptitude by the franchise. They lacked the talent or lost the talent (bias and Lewis literally dying) to injury. Also for what it’s worth being a fan since the last title and only having to sit through a year without the playoffs is commendable and other organisations would probably envy. I also thought this vid would start from the last chip in the 80s and progress to 08 and then to present but I can respect that it’s more of a lived fandom than documentary of such. Great video Dom hope to see way more in the future.

Man 2019 made me sick. Still til this day, we had all that talent and it was pissed away cause Kyrie couldn’t lead the young guys. Hayward’s injury made room for Tatum & Brown to rapidly grow tho so it wasn’t so bad. However I believe in the Jay’s, especially Tatum. He’s grown so much and improved vastly. That’s not talked about enough, just his failures. Been just as successful as Luka in terms of accomplishments in the league

This video did put in perspective how early JB and JT rose into playing postseason basketball. It feels like so many lost opportunities but they have barely been recognized as matured players up until the '22 run. I have had faith in this team no matter how many rings they seem to let slip away. But not winning it this year here (barring injury) would make me question the validity of the Jays as a championship duo.
@felipeb.9321
@felipeb.9321 Ай бұрын
JT was a 19-yr-old rookie averaging 18 points per game in his first ECF; JB, underused as a rookie, was in his 2nd year. Every single year they've been together they've made it to the playoffs: one 1st round exit, one semifinals, four ECFs & the infamous Finals appearance. only now are they really coming into their peak, and JT has just turned 26 (not even 4 weeks ago). everyone loves to forget that most greats don't win a chip before being 7 or 8 years in the league: MJ, Bron, KD were all 28; Giannis got his first at 26, so did Steph (but Steph didn't make MVP until 2022, Iguodala was finals MVP for Steph's first ring). Only the rarest of talents have won it much earlier, like 'Magic' Johnson, 20 and a few months and Finals MVP.

I give a lot of credit to the celtics in the 90s mostly for the fact that two of the players meant to lead the team literally died. Like you can't do much as a franchise when that happens. The late 90s celtics under pitino really set them up for failure in the early 00s

That's why I think people see the Lakers as the greatest franchise ever, because let's be honest..outside the 50s to 70's where the Celtics won 13 of their 17 rings. In the modern NBA the Celtics won only 4 rings and as soon as the late 1980's expansion happened and that there's more teams in the league, they won 1 title and for most of the 90's, 2000's and 2010 they weren't that dominant outside of now ( 2020's) and the 3 years stretch of 2008-2010

To be fair Boston isn't a place that's guaruntee to attract top free agents. It's bigger than a small market, but it's not like LA, NYC or Miami, where dudes are chomping at the bit to go to. With that in mind they've done incredibly well. One of the better managed teams in the league over the past 20 years.

Drafting Tatum was a sliding doors moment for the Celtics. In the sense that history kind of repeated itself. Bill Russell was drafted to the st Louis Hawks and then traded to the Celtics. Tatum is from st Louis. Tatum and brown will be for the Celtics what bias and Lewis should have been.
