This is LITERALLY the only Drop Video I like on all of YT. It's the only one that teaches an association to reward and better things, instead of just a Trade/Swap like LITERALLY all other trainers do. This video deserves WAY more credit than it gets.

Been struggling to teach my 9 week old Rottie to understand the concept of 'DROP' as he bites everything & I'm continuosly saying drop and opening his mouth. Then I came across your video, ran to Sainsbury's, got some chicken peices & within 30 mins my pup has got it. Now he is doing it with & without me dropping chicken on the floor, even when he is overly excited the moment I say drop he lets got instantly. Noticed it works with his biting too. You are truly a God send. Thank you so much.

Chirag, great video! Someone just brought it to my attention and I love it! I especially like how you demonstrate making the 'drop' highly reinforcing rather than just putting a tiny piece of kibble in the dog's mouth and then wondering why it doesn't work! I will be sure to guide clients to this as many have a tendency to be stingy with reinforcement.

This is a great idea! I've got a 14 week old shepherd, and playing can sometimes be tiresome because "drop" usually turns in to a tug of war...something which I never intend to initiate with him. I'll give this a try. Thanks for the video! :)

This is an excellent video. My dog is possessive of his toys and absolutely will not relent. I always manage to distract him by using a squeaker toy in my pocket but I never know if I'm doing everything in the right sequence. Thankfully I know exactly what I need to do now in order for him to get the hang of drop. Can't wait to try this out tomorrow :)

Awesome technique. I managed to teach my 3 month old Lab/German Shepherd puppy to drop her toys after just three days (about an hour of conditioning each day). It really helps to use a treat that the dog finds particularly attractive. And, even though she's already figured it out, I still give her a treat every now and then for performing the drop just for reinforcement.

This is a great. TY! For folks who aren't savvy about differential reinforcement or conditioning--the concept of primary/secondary reinforcement needs explanation. Fading is what people are asking about--what to do if dog doesn't have food motivation. Please explain the process of fading (and a session on fading would be great)for other people. People completely lose the success they gain because they do not understand the basic (unless you remember psych 101 or u are an ABA person) concepts.

@NotToImply Hi good question! The dog is not been rewarded for the action of picking up the object for chewing yes. Also I believe that this is best done one trial per session (max 3 per session) which i believe would counter the dog learning to pick up the object so he can be asked to drop it.

@CanisHR You can use whatever words you want! That's the joy of training your own dog. You can use the word "pizza" if you'd like - it just depends what that word means to your dog once you've trained the behaviour. :) Chirag is just getting a conditioned response here. Have you tried this? I use this method exclusively now and am in love with it. Works like a charm.

This way of teaching drop makes sense and looks like it could work very well! I've tried it today with my puppy, unfortunately she is too much focused on the food. She smells if I carry chicken around and sits patiently there, looking at me in order to get it. If nothing happens she starts crying, jumping etc.. Should carry treats around the whole day in order to teach it?

Thanks! I waited until Cody was looking for treats I had not yet dropped after saying "drop". I then did a few sessions of drop as he was walking towards an object I had put on the floor & finally when he had lower value items in his mouth then higher value ones. When I did the first few reps of higher value items I threw cubes of cheese over the floor the first couple of times after I said the word regardless of his behaviour, but found that he had spat out the item in anticipation...

well with a very protective of things, or items dog.. .traditional ways, or even swapping.. this develops the strong association with the word drop.. , and safer.. as swapping requires you reach.. however if you condition the response.. drop MEANS other reward.. the dog drops the item and starts looking in anticipation for the reward.. change the emotional response.. then the dog has no need to feel threatened or anxious.. you would want to work this a LOT away from items of value.. till it becomes habit :)

I like this method in theory...but what do you do with those dogs who have something really high value, and look at you intently when you say the cue, however, continue to hold the object in their mouth. they can then see what youre working with and choose to continue with what they have if it's more motivating. how do you work with these situations? great video. good for you for using a science based, positive method :)

Did you watch the whole video? They show it with food. Food should be one of the later things trained so your dog knows the game and is set up for success. and start with low value food items. Thanks DM. I haven't tried this method but will have a play with my dog later!

This is how you train it, once the dog understands and was properly set up for success and then has had variable rate of enforcement you can reward with other things the dog finds rewarding, even if you don't carry chicken with you at that particular moment, because you've set up the dog to associate only positive outcomes when s/he hears that 'Drop' it, s/he won't feel that they have to wolf it down or run away from you, etc.

Great video. Is there any way of progressing this on to my dog dropping stuff without the use of treats?
@Lucinka584 жыл бұрын
why wouldn't you want to reward your dog for dropping something? Especially if it is something that he might have found on a walk or stole in the house and you really need him to drop it? It is like if you went to work without getting paid.... But ..... as he said, you can always reward with a toy or a game, doesn't always have to be a treat...

Drop What? He is teaching the dog to be interested in somthing else when he says the key word, a bonus of this is him dropping what ever he has in his mouth, or from being distracted from somthing he is going to take in his mouth. Dogs dont understand english, you could use haddock as the keyword if you wanted! Drop is for us, not the dog. The dog associates the inflection of "drop" to a treat being on the floor. Basic Pavlovian training! Ill be using this with our new puppy :-)
