I learned this technique from you/Beckman and someone called me “heavy handed”. But it absolutely works on my Mexican Street Dog who thinks he owns the street. He has been rehomed 4 times because no one can control him..,.except me…using Beckman’s techniques. It just works. Thanks for another great video!

Unfortunately I can’t say the same with y rescued dog. Although he is getting there, slowly but steady. If I put my hands on his collar, he will fight me and turn feral. I let him loose with the leach and when needed, I yell at him and pull him out of there with the leash. He will be winning for a bit but stay put. I don’t know if he is like because he’s scared or something else. He is great with almost all dogs, but there are few big strong male or female dogs that if they look at him the wrong way, bigger then him that he just loses it and turn feral. I haven’t seen one like that here yet witch I would love to learn how to tackle that issue.

@@paulvaz5846 sounds like to me your dog is dog selective. cool with some yet suddenly aggressive and/or dominant with others. Beckman has shown this but you have to not let go of the collar until your dog basically give up. sometimes it's neccsary to flip them on there side not to be like "alpha" as many trainers thnk it is but to calm the dog down as it's most likily in a really bad mindset. for saftey you should probably have your dog in a muzzle and if you can get people with dog to interact with yours in a safe area so you can do this. some rescue dogs also have trama with handling around the neck also so that needs to be cnsidered as well. I had a rescue onuce that the prevous owner owned a fighting ring and if his dogs looses, he would hoke the dogs with a special thin wire. ik fucked up but the dog for awhile acted feral whenever someone tried to grab it's collar

@@paulvaz5846 sounds like you need to work on diversion-distraction and creating new mental connections. It's basically the "Don't think of a red bear" strategy (if you tell someone not to think about a red bear they will absolutely think about a red bear - you need to give them something else to think about whenever they are in a situation where they might think about the red bear.)

Good Joel trainings! Dominating space is an excellent way to assert your status: 'get out of my way" versus moving around them. Move their butts along by closely following them. It's a '"psyching the dog out' approach. It might feel silly, but these behaviours are so meaningful to the dog it can radically change their behaviour. These behaviours have really increased my authority with my Cane Corso and psychopath Boxer.

I wish I wasn't so far away, I'd love an appraisal of my Akita. Although, I'm pretty sure I already know what I've got: A lot of independence, a lot of dominance, some prey drive, strong protecting instincts, and being unaltered there is some sexual tension he carries as well. I've worked really hard on him, and he does pretty good, but there are some things I cannot do with him; such as dog parks. He doesn't want to have a go at every dog he sees, but even if it's 1 or 2 out of 10, that's still too much. Being 115 lbs of prime age Akita, it's just not worth the risk. The lives of other dogs and his own life should the county come for him make this all too risky to rely on psychological control. I CAN walk him off-leash and we can pass dogs while off-leash, but not all dogs. If the dog we pass is balanced, chill, ignores him, etc then he will pass right by while off-leash at my side. If it's a reactive dog going nuts at the end of their line with their owner holding that dog back, we can still pass by with him at my side off-leash, but I am likely going to have to correct him to get him to stop paying attention to that dog. However, if a dog is staring him down and is very still, he goes into a zone and my correction will not snap him out of it, at least not to the point to where I can have him off-leash. If I see such a dog approaching, I have to leash him. Is it my own concern that he's picking up on and reacting out over? Possibly, but I don't think so. I think he sees that dog as a threat and a challenge. Once he sees that, he goes red zone. I've done this enough to know ahead of time by observing the incoming dog's body language and energy to know if my Akita is going to red zone, which is good, but it is something that I haven't fixed with him. To be honest, I'm debating on whether or not I want to fix it, because I did get him because I wanted a dog that would protect the family from threats. I am not sure I completely want to subdue those instincts. What I want is for him to be very socialized to understand what is a threat or a danger and what isn't. Those dogs that are posturing up and staring him down... those dogs are ones that are more likely to be a threat as they're allowed to posture up and challenge random dogs and people. He already ignores dogs who are barking at us like crazy. He seems to understand that they're just wary and are warning us to stay away from them, they're not actually issuing a challenge. They're just loud, perhaps nervous, wary, or overly excited. He seems completely unconcerned about them.
@redwitch12
@redwitch12 Ай бұрын
From what I know of Akitas, they're extremely prone to aggression toward other dogs. They're also not the most outwardly expressive critters, so it can be difficult to catch their "tells". It sounds like you're learning your dog's cues very well, which should go a long way towards building a strong and effective partnership. Since you can't teach other people's dogs to stop posturing and challenging, your best bet is likely to teach your guy to always check in with you when he's uncertain. His instinct is going to always be to view a challenging dog as a potential threat, but from your description, you've already done an amazing job of socializing him so he doesn't see EVERY dog as a threat.
@GetFitwithDogs
@GetFitwithDogs Ай бұрын
Yes, the breed tends to be very unmanageable around other dogs, but I've put a lot of work into socialization with more balanced dogs from the moment I got them at 8 weeks. They've also been around a ton of people, so they're well acquainted with human behavior too. That's not enough, though, as you have to learn their triggers. You are correct, they tend to carry "poker faces" more than other dogs, and they can catch an unobservant person off guard if they decide to go off. I've learned to spot signs with mine, but I'm actually better spotting what energy they don't like from other dogs. I can generally - but not always - tell which dogs they'll disapprove of. I've been told my Akitas are among the most well behaved Akitas people have seen, but they still aren't dogs you can allow to roam around off leash around people and mostly other dogs.

It is that different energy along with this great advice that is hard for owners reproduce. Can I ask is the Caesar neck bite and Dog Daddy's under hip poke for the same purpose as your example here. I’m a firm but fair leader thanks to you, some dogs the treats only method works, but if you have a breed like a husky, you have to prove that you’re strong, tough and they should have a healthy respect. I’m not advocating for hitting, kicking or beating a dog.. my husky malamute knows if I shout “enough”, he has to stop whatever he’s doing or he will have a correction (collar grab, made to sit, focus on me and maybe a time out if I need time to self regulate to not make things worse).

We just got an Australian cattle dog puppy and he gets feisty like this sometimes with our older dog (she does it back too so its not just him) But when he gets to be too much we shout “hey!” And they both immediately stop and look at us and look guilty. It’s so funny. Like they know exactly why they just got corrected and they stop. And then eventually if they get too riled up again and start face nipping it happens all over again. Hoping that making and correcting at such a young age will result in him not doing it to other dogs when he’s older. But we live out in the country so it’s really hard to socialize him with other dogs. I don’t know where to find any that I trust.

Im not a trainer but I do work with packs of dogs daily and do this with the boisterous or over dominate ones, if the dog doesn't get the hint from the other dogs I step in. The problem is too many owners are too soft with their dogs inside the home so when they go outside they behave badly. I always recommend to people that pack walks are so beneficial for their dog for many reasons but sadly many want to Molly coddle them and not allow them to be dog then wonder why they have problems.

This dog is a lot like our dog (GSP/Lab mix) although our dog is arguably more athletic/quicker & has a higher prey drive. The good news is he's still a lot of puppy as he's less than two years old. We've done all of the above & even tried an e collar, but in the end about the only thing that seems to work is being around dogs that are either confident, dominant, or "tolerant" although depending on the dog he's with changes how well he listens & if one or any of the corrective methods have an effect. The problem is finding those dogs, but more so owners who are willing to have play/training dates. Dog parks are impossible. We get him 3-4 miles of walks a day & get some running/fetch in. The exercise doesn't knock much off when he meets a new dog (GSP's are a Beckman 'all day' kind of dog - there is no end to the energy/drive), but we try to meet all the new dogs (especially larger dogs) we can since we've figured it's about socialization. He's improved & is getting better with more socialization/training & just from growing up, but has a ways to go. He's good in the house and listens quite well as long as there isn't another critter within reach. I wish there was a quick 'do this then that' training solution, but we haven't found the magic combo, other than lots & lots & lots of repetition...

@Beckman's Dog training. I have a 9 month old female Lab. Since she was a puppy, she fixates on other dogs. Not from aggression but in a way that I found unhealthy. We managed to train a lot of the fixation away on leash but when she plays with other dogs she will run along side them and just obsessively lick the side of their mouths. She is not dominant or bad in any way but she annoys every dog she meets. Can this be praydrive along with submissive behaviour? I realize that she is still a young dog and it can get better when she matures but I would like to be able to break her obsessiveness. Is the "go get method" the best way to go for this type of behaviour? Would really appreciate any tip you might give me. Thank you! Greeting from Germany.

One of the issues I have when my pup plays with other dogs is when the dog is unleashed. If it gets a little too much and I try to calm/correct my dog, the unleashed dog goes after mine and it keeps going. All while the other owner just lets it keep happening

It's so difficult to try to find dogs to help your dog when they have these issues. Liability issues make the risk not worth it. Nobody wants to set other people's dogs up to be chew toys for their dog who has issues, when those other dogs can get real injuries. That's why dogs like Prince and trainers like Joel are so special and unique. I wouldn't trust anybody else to not totally freak out when dogs start going at each other. Most people just don't know what they're looking at or when to intervene.

I have two husky mixes, brother and sister. They are big, strong dogs with crazy prey drive. They have dug dozens of deep holes on my backyard and they act just like this husky with each other and other dogs at the dog park. They fight with one another and it’s impossible to separate them. I’m not sure how to handle these behaviors given they are always together.

Joel I have a question about people..... I posted a video of my dogs threshold manners and how it is a vital part of training. I had a comment ... "Can you explain why please" Is this kind of question the reason for the way that you speak to people? ! Lol

I am a little embarrassed to ask and hope this question gets thru. I have a 3 month old German Shepherd that seems to view me as a chew toy. I got her at two months. She is also very stubborn and wants to do things her way. I been told that German Shepherd puppies can be very mouthy. I am not blaming the dog as much as I want to be doing the right things for her. I have a lot of chew toys and use treats to reinforce positive behavior. I give her plenty of exercise, which I can because I am retired. Most of our contact is her mouthing my ankles, hands, pants and shirts. I have her on a short leash so I can give her corrections but that does not seem to work. I have a crate she sleeps in at night by my bed and she does pretty well in that. I realize this is a lot of info. But after watching some of your videos there are a lot of factors that can be at play. Anyway, this is a long message and may require a long response. Thank you so much for your insightful videos. Stephen, put your hand infront of your puppy, let it bite your hand. Everytime it does, press your thumb hard on its tongoue like you are a cactus. It will learn to interract with you without biting. You can also say "NO" as a marker and do that if you wanna correct your puppy biting ur ankles/cloths. Also ur puppy is really young. Focus on potty training. Good luck!

I have to ask. How do you not get bitten by some of these dogs. I’ve learnt so much from you but I’ve always wondered how no dog seems to react. I train dogs (not certified) under another trainer and we get some highly strung dogs. If I were to take one by the collar, I think I’d get snapped.

Jesus! How hard could she have hit that other dog? When you said she is obsessed with Prince I started thinking it might be because he's a Doberman. It sounds weird, I know. But I've had no less than 4 people who live in my condo complex tell me that my Doberman is the only dog their dog will play with. They said if they take their dogs to the park, it avoids other dogs. If they visit friends or relatives who have dogs, their dog doesn't play with the other dogs. My Doberman is the only dog they like to be around.

@@Krapvag E-collar is a great tool when you know what you are doing. If you know what you are doing you don't appear in such videos. If you use e-collar and don't know what you are doing you only make things worse. You don't need e-collar to establish borders and hierarchy.

E-collar have their place but not here and not in most people's hands tbh. I think a lot of people think of them as this "magical fix" but in reality are going to f*ck their dog up trying. A lot of "trainers" use them and do the same. There are other ways to help not just reach fry the dog or.on the other end of the spectrum stuff it full.of treats til in can't walk it so far and sick lol. This dog likely wouldn't be treat motivated anyways

I see dogs like this all the time in daycare and it seems like I'm being rough but if I don't grab them and exert a little bit of strength (I'm 5'2, these dogs could easily overpower me especially these huge high energy doodle mixes, please stop making doodles PLEASE!), they terrorize everyone and everything and it eventually escalates into fights because the energy gets too high and no one is in their thinking mind (including me lmao)
