My own girl is a 55lb rock solid pit bull. One time we were walking, her on her leash and being well behaved when a small dog ran up barking and snarling off leash. The owner was down the block, talking on the phone ignoring the dog. The dog darted at my dog and bit her on the ankle hard enough to draw blood. My dog darted back and sternly faced the little dog with a squared stiff body. She gave me a look like "deal with it or I do". The little dog then attacked me and bit my boot, sinking a canine into the leather. I shoved it back with my foot and told it sternly no. Not a hard kick or anything, but pushed it back. It darted for my leg again. My dog stepped forward to defend me and I told her no, so she just stood watching, but would have probably grabbed and shook the dog if I made any noise of pain. The dog bit my boot again. Fortunately it was having trouble getting thru my boot so I wasnt hurt but my boot got punctured and scratched again. I shoved it harder, not hard enough to hurt it badly, but enough to knock it back a few feet to say "enoughs enough". It stood there aggressively yapping but not approaching. The owner ran up yelling about me "kicking his dog". I pointed out the blood running on my dogs leg and my punctured boot, and do we need the police here? The owner scooped up his dog and ran away, and my dog went to the vet to get her wound scrubbed out. I hate little dogs that act like maniacs. Just because they are small, people seem to think they dont need training. If I wasnt wearing work boots, I would have been bit and my dog ended up with punctures on her leg.

Yep, I used to be that owner. My family found "cute" when my mini schnauzer would misbehave, attack other dogs and people, etc. We just treated him like a spoiled child. This KZbin channel opened our eyes to understanding we were harming the dog, as he was unsocialized & he was under constant stress. We started to take training seriously, now the dog can play with other dogs, meet new people, be in unfamiliar places, etc.

@@childofcascadia you were actually within your rights to call the police and report the bite, and also demand rabies vaccination records. I learned this from my vet after my dog got bit by a raccoon - when a person or a dog is bit by another dog or wild animal, there's always a risk of rabies transmission (highly unlikely in most cases , but since it is lethal there are laws to this effect). In this case it would have taught that jerk a lesson.

Very refreshing to see a small dog owner seek help. It is so cliche that little dogs start the problems, but my experience is that more little dogs are reactive, bark and/or lunge on leash at my dog on walks than do larger dogs. Most little dog owners don’t understand the problem with that.😊

Not only owners don’t have the perception that they need to work on it, but I think also breeders care less about passing on this personality trait. Do I have any source for that claim? No. It is only from observation and can be very biased.

I have a mini poodle that was bit by a terrier and has become reactive on a leash. I am constantly training, using different methods but still 1,5 years later: some days our walks are good and some days are bad. The problem is that when I train my dog often unleashed dogs or silly people ruin our training session by coming up close to my dog, scaring it more during the training. Many dog owners and random people think they can just come up and touch/play. I had many unpleasant rude things said to me when I asked not to come closer because we were training to keep calm at a distance. So our training progress is "1 step forward and 2 steps back". I watch and love this channel and some things help a lot and my dog has improved considerably. But for now, even if my dog barks or lunges - he is always on a short leash on walks, we move away to give more space to other dogs if I feel my dog is nervous. Yet there are always people who would ignore my gestures, let their dogs come closer even on a leash, and then get annoyed that my dog barked or lunged at them.

@@bullarabcookie interesting interpretation - I saw a little dog that showed plenty of 'stillness' while experiencing lots of 'unknowns' stimulation. Seems like a normal response, in fact it is built into animals by evolution, limit movement when unsure (Lots of animals do this including humans.), did not 'flight', did not 'fight', did not 'freeze' - no indication of being overwhelmed, just a healthy level of caution and 'wait and see' mixed with a natural confidence. Yeah, confidence. If you say "chest and head held high" is a sign of 'insecurity' then every dog, including Prince, who ever faced another dog face to face with head held high was showing 'insecurity' which is simply an unmaintainable interpretation.

I wish more little dog owners would take their little dogs to be trained. It's incredibly dangerous when a little dog attacks an 80 pound dog. It will never end well for the little dog, but for sure the big dog gets blamed. Most little dog owners just pick their dog up. Doesn't that reinforce their bad behavior?
@username111511

i agree that small dog owners must train and work with their dogs too. Even though it might be bad I had to pick up my dog several times when unleashed big dogs with no recall ran up to my dog. He gets terrified/reactive if a big dog runs up to him. Once the dog kept jumping on me trying to bite my dog's face, that's how huge the dog was - the dog owner was far away and wasn't in a hurry to help, didn't even look up from his phone. So yes picking up your dog is not good, but sometimes there is no other way and it's so sad

Went to a park with my lab mix, she adores little dogs which was a bit of a problem when a Pomeranian wiggled out its yard under the fence ran up to us tried to bite her feet. All my dog did was go into play mode, when the Pom realized it wasn’t gonna get anywhere with her it came towards me, before my Lab realized what was happening, I called her back turned towards the Pom and tried to shoo it away with my foot. Much like how some of these dogs he trains are so unaware of their surroundings and are so focused on getting their “target” it was standing over my foot and when I tried to shoo it away I accidentally tossed it a couple feet. It was fine and all no harm done, just ran back into its yard, but that was one of the craziest little dogs I’ve encountered and it really is ridiculous how many owners don’t bother to train little dogs just because it’s “cute” or it’s “too tiny to do any real harm” like that’s not the point. You’re just a bad owner avoiding responsibility for your dog, I don’t even wanna know how some of them raise their own children

Here's a scenario that might be similar: one of my dogs bit another dog's ear while she was boarding - it's a playcare boarding place. The dog that got bit was older, but also partially deaf and partially blind. The owner/manager thought that the old dog was approaching my dog and didn't pick up on cues my dog was giving to stay away or slow down - and I also think it was a similar situation in that my dog really didn't have a lot of experience being around other dogs, so the other dog's behavior freaked her out. So yeah in this situation it could be any number of factors or just a perfect storm of some sort.

So awesome to see a small dog owner caring about her dog’s inappropriate behavior and wanting to fix it. There’s a huge problem in the small dog community with not caring or thinking it’s important to train their dogs. In my neighborhood there are at least 6 houses with small dogs that are all reactive or worse. I mean barking and lunging wildly for 20-30 mins while the owner just keeps gardening like they are deaf or doesn’t even come outside. Or the demon chihuahua Cocoa down the street who has charged my 2 dogs (pit and an AM bully type) twice off leash in the past week alone. My teen daughter had to give him a little nudge away with her foot bc he was charging up on her and our brand new rescue American bully/mastiff mix. We didn’t know his history or him well enough yet to be positive he wouldn’t make a snack out of bite sized cocoa if he made it close enough to bite at Bowser’s legs or nose. The same dog has charged me at night while I was unloading groceries (he lives like 10 houses down mind you) and charges numerous other people that walk their dogs in the field behind my house on a regular basis. He is NEVER on leash and all the owner does is yell his name from 30-40ft away. They are the type of owners that will not learn their lesson until they lose their dog in the most horrible manner when he runs up on the wrong dog one day. It’s sad because in someone else’s hands Cocoa could be a good normal dog.

I like it when your "dogs are animals and are allowed to NOT BE ROBOTS" side comes out. So many trainers and vastly many owners treat their dogs as if they should be robotic in behaviour. It is incredibly unfair and frankly unintelligent. Dog owners need to be reminded to be kind and gentle and REASONABLE in their expectations of their dogs and in how we interpret their 'problem' behaviours/moments.

This behaviour is actually explained well in Temple Grandin's "animals make us human", the "wolfier" the dog is in appearance the more submissive traits they'll show. Small, cute "unwolfy" like dogs LACK submissive traits entirely and will try and dominate everything they come across. 100% dominant behaviour from wolves would mean constant fighting and no established hierarchy, the oldest and most experienced wolves are in charge and wolves who went against the leaders were killed in fighting or ostracised. We have bred submissiveness out of these tiny dogs!

Maybe it was just a personality conflict. Happens with people and dogs. Puppy is young still learning not to do that. Or maybe older dog said something in dog language not nice that caused the reaction. I was at a farmers market the other day with my 3 yr lab mix. I asked if the other dog is friendly, yes. The owner was shocked when his dog reacted to my dog. He apologized and walk away but felt so bad about it that he came back and apologized again (I felt so sorry for him). Personality conflict is what I attributed it to.

I can almost guarantee he attacked the other dog because of something on the floor that he was territorial of. my small shihpoo is exactly the same personality as this brown dog. She freezes up and nips/bites if another dog sniffs her. She was properly socialized as a puppy but started getting dog aggresive at about a year. So yes exposing the small dog to other dogs is good, but my dog is the same if put in this situation, just ignores other dogs, she wont attack them. HOWEVER, if there is a spot she is sniffing, if there is a crumb of bread on the floor, a dead worm even and she starts sniffing it, and another dog comes to sniff what she is sniffing, it turns into a full blown attack! So i guarantee this brown dog will attack another dog again (happened to me) its hard to change them because its such a specific bad habit that happens so quickly. So the best thing to do is to be proactive. I now tell other people if they bring their dog over, please dont throw treats/food on the ground around my dog because she will attack other dogs for it. Also, if my dog is getting petted by someone and another dog approaches to get pets, she will attack, So now if i notice the other dog coming towards me as im petting mine, i stand up and immediatly tell my dog to leave before the other dog approaches and then i can happily pet the other dog. You just have to kind of foresee what will make them tick and remove them from the situation before it escalates sometimes.

Could correcting a dog while she is interacting with another dog result in decreased confidence around dogs in the future ? Great questions. I see that any dog should have the right to self defense as much (or slightly more ) aggression she was met with. Correcting a dog while they are interacting is the very best (possibly only) time to make corrections. It will likely not make her less confident but will make her less bold to misbehave. It sounds like she needs to be around other dogs under scrutinized supervision to draw out any reactivity that is unwanted. Joel has a whole class of students about to hit the streets soon.

@@krystalsnider457 The leashes the woman has in the video. They retract out to a certain length and can run open or locked. They can be very dangerous. I've personally never owned one but I saw someone's dog just wonder while their owner was looking at their phone and it almost got hit by a car. In another case I watch a guy let out the leash to it's full 20' and the dog still keeps pulling him.

Retractable or flexi leashes are awesome in the hands of a knowledgeable handler with a well behaved dog. I have total control mentally of my 140 pound LGD and don’t need an ecollar or prong or gentle leader I walk him every day on a 26foot flexi allowing him an extra 50 ft to roam and jog and sniff. 2 famous trainers who agree with me are 2 time world champion 12 time national champion IGP Ivan Balabanov and Jay Jack well known for doing seminars for years with Larry Krohn. They are a disaster when used by average dog owners who don’t have any control over their dogs.

Would it make sense to position and hold this small dog and allow other dogs to come up to sniff his backside?

On my walk with my 75lb pittbull terrier 3 small barking unleashed dogs like these came charging across the street toward us. The owner was yelling frantically at her dogs. They were at my dogs heel by the time we got to the other side of the street. Thankfully my dog dosen’t react aggressively. He just freezes and let other dogs sniff him. So I'm trying to remain calm and trying to pull my dog along and calling him to continue our walk but he’s like a no budge boulder. I read that you shouldn't pull on the leash but I also understood the owner of those dogs concern and I finally get him moving thankfully. I never see the owner, she just kept calling her dogs. Mostly little ones run to him so my dog is pretty much used to it. It's the owners who be panicking. I've have said leave it many times before. I'm still learning how best to handle these situations.

Watching the first meeting between Price and this dog. I observe Beckman calling the little guy "bold" for doing nothing more than standing there while Price rudely sniffs his face and looms over him. I observe Beckman does not recognize Prince is being rude and blames the small dog for protecting his space. What I see is Beckman repeatedly not understanding the situation and blaming a small dog for protecting his space. He is wrong to claim it is normal for dogs to sniff each others' faces: this is rude in the dog world. Sniffing butts and legs is NORMAL. The more Beckman videos I watch, the more convinced I am that Beckman is 100% clueless about dog training and dog body language. Stop letting Prince bully other dogs and pretending you're helping them.

And you are wrong to think your comments are welcome, warranted or necessary and will go unchecked just as the little dog acting jerky for no reason. The whole world is not the dogs space to not know how to act just as this space is not yours. You don't have to be here, the X is in the corner of the screen. I have an idea...Go help a dog or someone with a problem dog, make a video and maybe you can change the world for the better since you have the solutions so well. Show us please, Almighty GREAT ONE.

Man, every once in a while I'm recommended this channel, and i get reminded just how incompetent Joel is with body language (and everything else lmao). This little poodle has every right to correct other dogs he doesn't like getting in his face. He didn't go to bite even once, just showed teeth and growled a bit. That's great communication. Maybe he went at the other dog because he felt like he didn't have a chance for flight. Great dog, nothing to correct with him.

@underduress5761
@underduress5761 Ай бұрын
Well you should watch more of his training videos. He uses a balanced approach Most people that come to him are there to have unwanted behavior corrected and that's mostly aggression or reactivity. If someone just went around punching or beating other people up, unprovoked, do you think that the police should never arrest them but instead give the assailant a treat whenever they didn't beat someone up?
@mikelazure7462
@mikelazure7462 Ай бұрын
Well, maybe watch more, maybe listen to his reasoning - he does not want to take a long time to change problem behaviours when this will cost his clients MUCH more money - his ethics are that if he can change a behaviour in one or two sessions with minimal and short term negative impact on the dog then he will do so - rather than expect a client to pay a few thousand dollars in training fees to get the same result over months of training. He learned his training first with Orca's - as in an animal you cannot "punish" - all training was 'positive only' - he KNOWS that stuff inside out and has intelligent reasons why he uses a wider range of methods with dogs. If you want to see positive only training methods then watch someone else.

No one is against positive reinforcement training we all use it so that is a false question. That dog just seems like a no nonsense dog not really looking for friends and puts out signals for others not to cross. I'm thinking the other dog was at fault and didn't respect boundaries. It's one of those situations where I'd need to see how my off lead dog acts. It's likely he'd just respect it's wishes and ignore it and they wouldn't even care to meet.
