Disclaimer!!! I'm a complete novice at bodywork. Now that's out of the way.....you mentioned how nicely the bonnet fits into its aperture. If you were to brace between each upright with more box section. You could incorporate a reference for where the bonnet should sit, plus give you more structure to build off to create a much more comprehensive jig with many different references. Apologise if you thinks this is a pointless comment. Absolutely loved the rebirth of the Ranalah....seeing it there in your workshop waiting to be finished is such a nice (almost) conclusion to the journey.
@totalutternutter2 жыл бұрын
I'd join them together with a brace just to counter any wiggle room in the bolt holes in case you have to unbolt them during the process.
@DominicChineas2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m planning on that, then the bonnet aperture can come from that
@colinhiggins14122 жыл бұрын
Yes I was thinking the same thing. Any movement in the bolt holes will be exaggerated at the headlamp aperture. Joining them together would be much better and then to get the bonnet aperture from that brace is a great idea.
@billmartindale44472 жыл бұрын
I'd of used countersink bolts too fix the plates too the jig/frame plus the bracing as mentioned by others.

I think you'll find the new panels will be a slightly different shape and size from the originals and won't line up anyway. When these cars were new they probably weren't built to within a 1/4 of an inch
@vintagetinrandykehler48242 жыл бұрын
@Gee Bram I was thinking the same thing. It's great to have starting points, and one can always alter the new parts to fit as well as possible. I've rebuilt many cars in my 40 years as an autobody specialist so having the car fixtured is number 1, but in the end it'll come down to getting the door to body fitment, then work forward and back from there. Measure, measure, measure!! 🙂👍👍

Hello Dom, I like the templates. Interesting to read the comments posted already, good info being shared. I wanted to thank you for the comment that we should focus on positive progress, however small. Long term projects take guts and sheer determination to see through. It is easy to get hung up on what is not going so well, or massive amounts to still do. I try and do a bit every day, and not come back in until I feel I have moved the job along, even if just a bit. Sometimes just working out how to go about the next bit is enough. Watching with interest, Mart in Solihull.

Great job. 2 comments 1) you might consider putting a bar between them at the level of the bumper brackets, if you are going to remove the entire front clip. The headlights are good locator positions but you’ll want some good positive connection to hold the front clip as you graft it back. 2) I think you should dip it. The liquid will get placed you won’t be opening up and think that will preserve the car for longer, since a car like that doesn’t have owners, it has care takers. Great work Dom! I look forward to seeing more progress.

Hi Dom, great job! I was a vehicle body repairer for Porsche and Rolls Royce in the late 80’s early 90’s. All their cars had to be repaired on a Celette dedicated jig which you have. There were very similar brackets supplied from Celette to the ones you have made for the entire model range, they usually bolted to the end of the chassis leg into the bumper bracket holes, this was fantastic if you were fitting new parts (bolted securely into position whilst they were welded). I don’t normally watch car repair videos because my wife doesn’t like me shouting at the IPad! but I’ve subscribed. Good luck with your project, few people realise the time that a job like this takes.

I think you are going about this the correct way. If I recall this car has a racing pedigree so it may have had a rough life and be a little off true anyway. Some years ago I restored a rather rusty Camaro, where its structural integrity was compromised, and using a lot of Chinese panels I had a devil of a job getting the car straight and the panels to fit. I even measured three other, what I thought were good straight cars, and was amazed how these differed too. I don't know about Porsche production of the period but I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot of variation in dimensions.

You could add extra bars that can be used as datum points for the cut outs for front indicators plus where bonnet aperture is and take lots of measurements before cutting and scan a drawing or photo of it and put the measurements on the pics as then you know it’ll fit. Can never have enough measurements when restoring cars as they move once cut it’s also why bracing is important on body shell if cutting floors etc out. The ranalah be getting some use making repairs for the Porsche over next year or two

You could build a complete wire frame around the whole body, then cut away the unwanted metal, you could then tack the new panels in place to the frame before welding up. a completely new concept in bodywork repair, then the template would become a fantastic sculpture to adorn the Foyer of a Porsche main dealership, Could be sold to the highest bidder for a fortune, or am I dreaming out load, you decide Dom..

I think a keyed "bolt in" crosser between the two headlight mounts with similar "placement jig" for the front of the bonnet aperature. I only say bolt in so that it can be removed and not be in the way during assembly and fitting, but accurately placed for final setting. Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
