You can respect veterans without using them as a pretext to bash immigrants. Quietly supporting programs that provide them with things like housing assistance and trauma counseling is more respectful than wearing a red piece of plastic once a year and driving around with a yellow ribbon bumper sticker on your car while blaming 'immigrants' for the sun not setting.

As an immigrant to Canada myself, Don's comment never mentioned creed or colour. He said "you people new to Canada". I myself am a Veteran of 13 years service, with 7 combat tours to my name. A few years ago my family and I had the privilege to meet Don Cherry in Trenton for the unveiling ceremony of the "Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial". I think he is the most sincere "Canadian Patriot" I've ever met, as well as being an avid supporter of our "Canadian troops". I have been an active participant of the "Royal Canadian Legion" Poppy Campaign for the last 15 years. In his defense, I've witnessed 1st hand the lack of knowledge and understanding of what the wearing of the "Poppy" represents. He might not be PC, but he calls it as it is. I will willingly shake his hand again and say "thank you for your support", from my "Brothers & Sisters" past, present & future. God Bless you sir.... CPL C.A BAYLEY - 33 ROYAL ENGINEERS (RET)

@Troll Hunter That really isn't the point. Cherry didn't say anything that wasn't factually true, didn't mention race in any way shape or form. Maybe those groups have good reasons for not wearing a poppy. I don't even live in Canada and am just hearing about this tradition myself. If I had just moved there and heard that commentary, I would have thought, "Hmm, I didn't know about the poppies, maybe I should take a look into it." That is how a mature adult would handle it. I'd take it as an invitation to learn more about this great country I just chose to immigrate to. I certainly wouldn't go into a frenzy like this Twitter mob did, trying to get him fired for doing nothing more than speaking the truth. And I guarantee the immigrants here aren't nearly as offended as the SJWs who have nothing to do with their pathetic lives than virtue signal and get "offended" on other people's behalf. Perhaps Cherry was a little presumptuous with his statement but to call it racist is totally out of line.

Here's my take: He characterized an entire group of people (immigrants) as unable to appreciate "our" great Canadian way of life solely by seeing people walking down a sidewalk without Poppies on. If you want a more factual statement I would say that a great majority of Canadians of all origins don't appreciate what Canada gives them -just look at your kids or your friends or your coworkers. If anything I would venture that immigrants as a group are likely far more appreciative than those who know no different than that which they have grown up in and are complacent and dismissive of how amazing this country is. @trueblue62014 жыл бұрын
It is about the implications of what he said. He said immigrants to Canada do not respect the sacrifice soldiers if they do not buy a poppy. Because Canada (save for Aboriginal cultures) is almost entirely made of immigrants, he discriminated against everyone who had ancestry outside Canada with this comment. This is easily understood as him saying that immigrants do not respect the sacrifice of soldiers. For immigrants that have served or have family members that served, he is implying they did not make a sacrifice or show the proper respect to soldiers. That is why it is an issue about coloured people serving in addition to anyone else who served or honoured the sacrifice of soldiers.
@stevenjanjicek4 жыл бұрын
true blue don’t speak for other people since I’m a Canadian with immigrant ancestry with every male since my great grandfather has fought for an army which isn’t Canada and even fought against Canada in some cases, we all wear Popeyes in my family and respect the tradition because without those fighters Canada wouldn’t be the free country it is for us to immigrate here. People who on purposely don’t buy the poppy are stating that they do not respect the fighters that fought for Canada which is the country that gave all immigrants a chance at new life.
@trueblue62014 жыл бұрын
@@stevenjanjicek You do realize Don Cherry is speaking for other people when he is implying that it is immigrants who are not respecting the sacrifice of soldiers by wearing poppies? While a poppy may be the most visible way to show respect for the sacrifice of soldiers, there are others ways to do it that can have as much or more value than a poppy. Donations, charities, improved health care for veterans, better mental healthcare, etec. These are done year round unlike poppies which for most people are only done for roughly a week a year. So just because they do not have a poppy does not mean they are not respecting the soldier's sacrifice. As well as you have proven immigrants do wear the poppy and support the soldiers sacrifice which is not what Don Cherry implied. Because of how Don Cherry worded it, the issue moved from general people not wearing poppies to specifically just immigrants not wearing poppies. This is why he is in trouble. He did not make it about people but "those" people. While I agree supporting the sacrifice of soldiers is important, that does not mean it is immigrants who are solely disrespecting that sacrifice which is what Don cherry's words implied.
@stevenjanjicek4 жыл бұрын
true blue sounds like to me that you don’t know that when you buy a poppy for like 2-3 dollars you are literally donating to war veterans. I’m pretty sure people donating to those types of charities aren’t forgetting to wear Poppy’s on purpose. There are many people from Asia that do not want to wear Poppy’s because Canada in the last 20 years has been fighting in those countries and they simply don’t want to show support for that. You’re talking as if these people secretly donate when you know yourself that’s not what happens. Don said “ you people” as in Immigrants that came to Canada and don’t want to support the Veterans. It’s not about the 2 dollars it’s about something bigger. I don’t know too much about this guy but with this statement they absolutely twisted his words, he didn’t talk about colour or a specific race or religion. I do agree that there are many people who are Canadians that don’t wear Poppy’s, but there are also many immigrants that are purposely not trying to support the veterans. And I think people who like to live in Canada and who have been given a better chance because of Canada which is in case of probably 90% of the population since we’re all immigrants, should all wear Poppy’s.

What he said stemmed from a good place, however the way he targeted immigrants in saying “you people” and these things is wrong. Yes Canada is a great country, the veterans deserve remembrance and respect for their bravery and valour in defending this land, however many immigrant countries fought in those wars as well (i.e Sikh soldiers fought with Canadian soldiers and were instrumental in holding France during WW2) also immigrants contribute a great deal to the Canadian economy, without them Canada would be no where near as prosperous. The attack should be on all people who are not participating in remembrance day, not singling out immigrants. If anything maybe these people need better education on the matter. No one should be fired, just please let’s be more compassionate for one another.

Jotunn Dovregubben this is the uneducated part... and j see it in my closest friends, sadly (hurts me.) Canada’s aging population (and the promised pensions to them) require tax money... problem is....? People are having less and less children. It’s like an upside down pyramid getting smaller and smaller... you need a foundation for the bottom. Thus the immigration. Immigration policies in Canada are VERY strict (however not perfect.) Canada obviously has a better quality of life, but this whole Christian-White dominant attitude... I doubt that helps immigrants be more patriotic, just feels isolated and unwelcomed in what they were promised to be their new home where that had freedom and were welcome. Be a part of the solution, not the problem.
@shaokhan44214 жыл бұрын
Jotunn Dovregubben not ALL immigrants take advantage of the system (but SOME do... you’re right, and that is the governments fault / they should have bette systems in place to prevent this.) but to the ones who don’t, saying stuff like that can be offensive, lets just all be nice to one another!

To be fair he was referring to recent immigrants. And a way of determining that would be their skin color, also accent. Not perfect of course, their are recent white immigrants from Eastern Europe and 3rd gen Indians/Chinese. But over all. He probably did notice a lot more poppy wearing among whites than non-whites. And extrapolated from that somewhat accurately that recent immigrants do not wear them as much. I don't think anyone is surprised by that. But so much of this story is missing the point. I am 5th gen white Canadian and I did not wear one. I do not think anyone is obligated to wear one. That really is the point here. That should be the correct response to his comments. My father is an Arab- Canadian physician born and raised in Calgary Alberta. He has always been a vocal supporter of the poppy campaign and always makes rather substantial donations to the Royal Canadian legion poppy fund around remembrance day. a few years ago he was on a telemedecine video call with a patient and his wife out of province who were apparently under the impression that the audio connection did not run two ways, and proceeded to deride my father as though he couldn’t hear them, making several racial jabs, commenting that the hospital couldn’t even get them a white doctor despite the fact that my father is EXTREMELY well regarded in his field. They garnished their blatantly racist tirade with the editorial- “ he’s not even wearing a poppy “ ( his poppy was pinned to his jacket at the time, which he had taken off ). The fact of the matter is, if you’re not a person of colour, you most likely lack the touchstone to understand what it feels like to walk through a world that’s constantly expecting you to prove that you’re one of “ the good ones “, I’m not offended by don cherry, or by the hordes who echo his sentiment, nor do I believe they should be censored, but I absolutely will continue to exercise my right as a second generation Canadian who loves this country to, whenever possible, refrain from associating with such small minded and petulant atavists and their delusions of entitlement that freedom belongs to them and not me.

I never see these people wearing a poppy, have you? He wasn't generalizing, he spoke what many are thinking about the leaches on our generous social system. It's no wonder Canada is in so much debt. Don Cherry has my full support! Grapes just tell it like it is, that being the truth! Don is a good honest man, he's a great Canadian in my opinion!! Keep speaking out Don, a lot of people died so you can have freedom of speech! It's loony Liberals that see racism around every corner!! God Bless You Grapes!!

It's good to remember that Don Cherry was 5 years old when WW2 started. He is emotionally on another level of "respect the vets" as younger generations.

The whole world has become too pussified. Unbelievable. When a country like Canada has fired Don Cherry. God help us all. Smh.
