I don't think this was balanced at all. These were extremely basic and ignorant points. A thorough review of the topic would include, for example, the work of Robert Putnam et al from Harvard University on Social Capital, historic rates of immigration, migration sources, historic composition of countries, the definition of a nation, and, yes, even genetics. No-one said it would be comfortable. The truth rarely is. This was just pablum from guys attempting to position themselves for Sportsnet jobs. Sportsnet made a clear statement of what it's official ideology is. Note the word ideology. That's different from truth. Cherry should educate himself more on the topic before spouting off his mouth, but he's aware there is an issue. Toronto's crime rate has been consistently and dramatically over historical averages from 1900-1960 for decades now. What's the difference? If it is migration, which is an honest point of discussion, the people that are affected by the higher rates (the old stock who are the victims in this case) deserve an answer. There should be no limits to the questions asked.

No, I'm not a leftie, but I was disappointed that he singled us out. Don has had interviews in the past where he clearly showed he was anti-immigration and pretty xenophobic (prejudiced against people from other countries), so this is nothing new from him. I think everyone should be wearing poppies, including Canadian-born people. Go to any University or government building in a major city and you'll see how many people don't wear poppies. As Biz said, Don is speaking from a Toronto context too so some people took demographic fact that many Indians, Pakis and Somalians are around there and formed their own conclusions about race. Now this I disagree with, the man is no racist, he's offended Swedes and Russians more than any other group. He's just a xenophobe.

I am Canadian. Caught your pod cast for the first time. Don’t know your names but the second speaker swears a lot! Just a observation. When I was going to school we stood up in Class every morning for O Canada, Our Father and God Save the Queen. I stood with pride. That doesn’t happen now. Merry Christmas has been replaced with Happy Holidays. Cultural differences has made us change. We open our arms to immigrants. I am a supporter. As I am sure Don Cherry is. He just stood up out of respect for our veterans. Who made our country free. Anyone who feels that was offensive, should maybe think a little deeper here in Canada.

I'm a former immigrant (east Africa) and my family are very proud Canadians. I almost got into a fight with a Caucasian kid in high school because he refused to stand for the anthem while arguing with the teacher. My family always wears poppies. Go to any uni campus and government building and you will see countless Caucasians who don't wear poppies. I was a big Cherry fan, but he went over the line by saying "you people come here and enjoy our milk and honey" before explaining how these people do not appreciate "our" ways. In another interview, he even said he wished he didn't infer blame on just immigrants, and rather on all people who don't wear poppies. I like Don Cherry too, and I don't believe he's racist, but he stepped over the line. All these years my family respected the Canadian customs and traditions, and yet it's us who get called out for not appreciating Canadian culture? He should have called out everyone who doesn't wear poppies, and he admitted this himself on a different podcast

Poor choice of words - why? Because some Indian from Brampton or Muslim from Quebec got offended by it? Get over it, it's a privilege to immigrate and live here (yes, like my family did from Europe). Society doesn't owe these *people* anything for being here, and this country would get by just fine without them being here.
@brianeleighton5 жыл бұрын
@@theholodomorisnttaughtinam2796 Ummm...maybe because the Indians fought in both World Wars. There are Indian and Muslim dead buried side by side with the Canadian dead at Flanders Field...the whole reason people wear poppies in the first place. I am guessing from your screen name you have Jewish Heritage. If I am correct, Indian infantry units were slaughtered fighting against the Nazis at Monte Cassino. Monty's counteroffensive against Rommel would have ended in failure if not for Indian Engineer units clearing paths through the Nazi minefields BY HAND. Maybe you should say thank you to them and keep your xenophobia to yourself.

By the way, the Indians were forced to fight by their colonial overlords, the English. Maybe that is why they do not want to wear a token of the group that forced their ancestors to fight? @theholodomorisnttaughtinam27965 жыл бұрын
Brian Leighton beyond that, Indians from India didn’t contribute to the building of Canada as we know it today; the first immigrants from India arrived in the 1970s and 80s, hardly can anyone from that continent tell someone like, whose people have been here for 150+ years, that they’ve equally contributed to this country and that we’re all immigrants. I also liked how Biz talked about just because someone is not wearing a poppy doesn't mean they don't respect those who gave up their lives for our freedom. A lot of immigrants coming from India, especially in the Punjab region come from military families, if it wasn't their grandfathers fighting in WW1 or 2 it was their grandfathers brother fighting side by side with Canadians, so I highly doubt the absence means they're being disrespectful. Cancel culture is real. Free speech is not just a legal concept, but also a cultural one. Being displeased with what someone says and speaking against it, is not the same as head hunting someone that said something you disagree with and calling for their lives to be destroyed. Cancel culture should be condemned. We shouldn’t live in a society where people with different views are enemies that need to be destroyed. We are losing the free speech culture where we defend the rights of people to say shit that offends us. We need to fight for the rights of people to say shit that offends us and we need to fight against the people that hate free speech. People that want the lives of people that say things they disagree with destroyed are a cancer on our society. Ceding ground to these tyrants is a bad idea.
