Don was a great dealmaker with that opportunity. He was in a good place, Germany and talking to the right people. it helped that he was a triple threat, guitar, vocals, songwriting. This was still around the time before they were really signing LA strip bands. People don't realize that Van Halen was not an immediate signing frenzy. He got that record out in Europe and it worked like the Ratt and Motley Crue EPs to create label or management interest in the States.

Dokken always had the best musicianship of any of the LA-based Hair-Metal bands, and Don always had the best voice. It was that strong European influence that they had started-out with.

Disagree. The thing that stood out to me about George Lynch's playing what's the effects that he used on his rig, sounded like he was using a power soak and an octave splitter and an Overdrive. That with Warren, I didn't hear the effects so much as I did his sweet melodic sound. Call it a matter of preference but I always preferred warranty Martini Over just about any other guitarist that came out of La during this era with the possible inclusion of Mark Kendall from Great White.

Sorry bruh but Dokken was not even close to having the best musicianship . Eg Racer X or Ozzy or Van Halen or White Lion .. even Ratt . Lynch had a good tone but really wasn’t any more technical than demartini for example . Actually Quiet Riot with Cavazo had better musicianship all around than Dokken

I became a fan with Tooth And Nail. Jez, I was in 5th grade, had a paper route that paid roughly $100/month + $30 on a good month in tips. Comic books & LPs! I did go back to to by buy Breaking The Chains too. I had no idea about Juan & Warren being in Dokken either. Thanks for another good interview story!

These stories are always so interesting. I love Dokken, but Breaking the Chains was never a favorite of mine. Something about it sounded like it was still on the cusp of 70s rock with a hint of 80s metal that was to come. Tooth and Nail is a huge upgrade, but still crazy raw when you listen to it now. Under Lock and Key, production wise, might be the best sounding album I've heard. Still to this day, that album is so damn impressive. Just a perfect mix.

I hate the fact that even 30 years later we have to be subjected to, 'I can't get into it' or 'I don't wanna say' , ect. If you're willing to talk about a situation, don't give us half of the story or 75% of it!! We didn't have the internet back then, so hearing news about your favorite bands came in drops or 3 months behind in a magazine! These guys should feel GRATEFUL that their fans still even care at all!! Just give us the story! Or, how you saw it at least. (I don't mean 'full in bloom'. Your interviews are amongst the best! I'm taking about the bands themselves).

@@HyperInflation2020 sometimes when jamming I'll play something that sounds a little "lynchish,," and it makes me feel good. When I worked at Guitar Center Santa Ana I would set the gsp21 rack mount processor on the lynch presets and usually have the George Lynch instructional video on the TV. Heck, I even sent away for the esp catalog. I wanted the tan camo kamikaze till I saw the price. Blows my mind that pedals are still around and there's more companies making even smaller sized ones. Back then amps were just that. No built-in tuners, effects etc.

Don’t know whose ego caused more friction, Don or George, but I ran across Don about 10 or 11 years ago. I was sitting at the bar in an upscale sushi restaurant with my girlfriend, and one chair over was Don Dokken. He was wearing a sleeveless jean jacket like it was the 80’s. Nobody recognized him and he was just making conversation with a busboy. He must have noticed me looking in his direction, so he leaned back in his chair stretching, and said loudly “well, this old rock star’s gotta get himself home.” Ugh. Only guy in my book that can get away with that level of douchiness is Diamond Dave.

A great vocalist, an awesome band… Pity he and George have never truly gotten along… few know that the original European release featured Juan’s brother Tom on bass. There are so many talented guitarists within the genre, for me Robbin was always the better Ratt guitarist, but then there’s the bluesy guys like Mark Kendall and Tom Keifer, the list goes in for me.

I didn't know about Warren Either. I only heard about John Crocier, having to choose between being in Ratt or Dokken. Both George, warren, and Randy Rhoads were my favorite guitarists. But, even Zakk Wyld, on the Ozzy No More Tears was very good. As soon as I heard, Mamma, I'm coming home on the radio I was looking to buy that album. Sometimes one song is enough to know you want the album just by the quality of one song. A lot of bands now you hear the best song the have in the radio and then the other songs don't come close. Back in the 80's the entire album for metal is good all the way through.
