I am no big follower of ballet. I grew up knowing some things about it (sisters and cousins), watched the Baryshnikov Nutcracker on tv every year, and knew some of the composers. But lately, I have been playing this and Swan Lake (from the same production companies) about once a week. Television is a vast wasteland. KZbin has saved my brain.

Teatro alla Scala’s version of Don Quixote was interpreted by two Russian great artists Natalia and Leonid. Teatro alla Scala is a world-class ballet company. We watched their wonderful performance at QPAC in Brisbane. The performance of the "Don Quixote" was extremely successful and full of charm!

Excelentes balilarines y producción maravillosa. Ahora, el mejor Don Quijote que he visto es sin duda el del Ballet Nacional de Cuba. La figura del Quijote tiene cierto destaque, cosa que en este practicamente no aparece. Reveo está versión y realmente no puedo afirmar cual es mejor. Ésta es la versión de Nutejev e los bailarinez son extraordinarios.

Uma excelente produção resgatando a versão do ballet criada por Rudolf Nureyev em 1966 sobre o original de M.Petipa e A.Gorsky. Para este trabalho, na época, Nureyev conversou com o maestro John Lanchbery (Royal Opera), sugerindo a elaboração de novos arranjos que vieram enriquecer a música de L.Minkus. Natalia Osipova e Leonid Sarafanov formam um par de bailarinos impecáveis, acompanhados de um formidável trabalho dos solistas e corpo de baile. Entretanto, no meu entendimento, houve pequenos equívocos na captação das imagens pelas câmeras em determinados momentos do ballet como não registrar o momento certo de início do "fouetté" de Natalia Osipova no pas de deux final (2:09:06). Porém, fora isso, nada que comprometa a qualidade do trabalho dos artistas "ao vivo". BRAVO !!!

Yes! I've noticed the same thing. Her pointe shoes always look like they are about ready to die. I saw her comment in an interview that she hates spending time prepping her pointe shoes. Maybe she tries to dance in them as long as possible so that she can put off having to prep a new pair. Or maybe she just prefers a soft shoe with minimal support. She must have exceptionally strong feet.

The camera work spoilt the production and made it difficult to appreciate. The camera must have been on some sort of timer to constantly keep changing the view. Repeated overhead shots were especially irritating, as were close up of feet. Several times the camera zoomed in on some little feature and when returned to full stage view; the stage was suddenly full of core dancers. The principal dancers were great as expected, but even Osipova looked a trifle bored by the music though. Another thing and I know this theatre is not unique here: The lines on the stage give the appearance that it is being staged in a gymnasium.

It must have been a televion camera man. No one wants to see an overhead view of the ballet. We want to see the whole picture and their feet!!!

I love the ballet and the production. But as a composer myself, I’m totally against the so called “improvements” to the original score and the orchestration. I agree that the original Minkus score is somewhat cliché and basically harmonized and orchestrated. But it also offers a certain directness and rawness, something that’s completely missing in this “revision” of the score.

The two hugely talented principals are not served well by this production. The musical arrangement is saccharine and lachrymose, and Osipova’s first act costume was ghastly, also the choreography of the grand pas de deux was dreary in the extreme, no spice or fire, much prefer the Bolshoi production with Krysanova and Chudin.

La façon de filmer est horrible, il y a des gros zoom sur la tête des danseurs alors qu'il faut montrer tous le corps, on rate ainsi d'importants moments. Les danseurs, quant à eux sont magnifiques bien évidemment.

I guess you’ve listened to this on CDs with a full orchestra and stufio acoustics. You can’t exactly fit a full symphony orchestra into a theatre pit. Concessions just have to be made.

@@dunnedigby4957 Don Quixote usually has an orchestra of sixty to seventy musicians, and the La Scala pit can take a Wagner orchestra, so that is not the reason. This orchestration is at fault, limp and sugary, a disservice to the artists and the ballet !

This is the most terrible production of Don Quixote of all that we have seen: both the soloists and the corps de ballet do what they can, the tempo of the music is absolutely not the same as that of the score, Osipova has always been an anti-musical dancer, but here she has surpassed herself: everyone reproached the beat!

It's just terrible: Osipova, as usual, is not musical, does not hear music, and everything is outside the musical rhythm and tempo, terrible crooked legs, rough, disgusting looks. Everything else is top notch!

Ждали от Ла Скала большего. Все костюмы в одинаковой красной гамме, причем сцену заливают еще и красным светом зачем-то. Съемки просто ужасные. Танец Китри - показывают плечи Осиповой, знаменитое 36 фуэте - камера уходит на партнера, который в это время просто ходит по сцене. Белая пачка постоянно липла к спине, Осиповой ее приходилось поправлять. Дон Кихот ужасен, дайте ему галапередольчик. Посмотрю лучше вариант Мариинки с Васильевым.
