I saw him a few times and knew where he insulted the audience so sat in one of the two areas he targeted. He had me get up and go to the back of the theatre and when I was far enough away he proceeded to hit on my girlfriend. The other area was in the middle section, right side near the isle, 2nd or 3rd row, he’d get volunteers from that area to join him on stage. My plan was to get in that section the next time he was in town but sadly he passed away. So much fun.

His comedy was based on what everyone else was thinking and feeling inside. Exposing those fears in the manner he did, eased an awful lot of tension in the 60's and 70's. Gone are the days. It's like having a relentless Uncles bust your balls at every BBQ the family throws. Love the guy. r.i.p.

Sometimes it’s not that the audience is too “thin-skinned”, it’s that the joke wasn’t very good. Whether it be the timing, the delivery, or the context. His joke about Mexicans really seemed like it was just to elicit shock and for me it seemed like lukewarm race humour. No comedian is safe from bombing, even legends like Don Rickles. You’re living in a fantasy world if you think a man can do no wrong, if you wanna know the truth. Accept that he can tell flat jokes so that the legendary jokes really are legendary.

Rickles smiling at Leno at the very end says it all. The respect was there. Two professional comedians trying their best to entertain and Leno was happy to let comedic insult master Rickles take center stage. Too many people here thinking there was all this underlying animosity with Rickles hating Leno, etc. If Rickles hated Leno, he would not have gone on his show.

I don't have any special place for Leno, but out of all of his late night talk show appearances I feel like Leno fought back the most. I don't know how Rickles felt towards Hosts that fought back or hosts that took it all. I will say, though I don't see the disdain, that being said Rickles jived the most with Carson and did good with Letterman. I feel like on Leno and 90's Conan, his appearances were hindered with hosts trying to find their place...

Asking Jay Leno to go toe-to-toe with Don Rickles is like asking a toddler to hold back a hurricane. The chin never stood a chance. Also, Rickles for me is proof of the axiom, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone". I'm so bummed that I didn't figure out who Rickles was until after he died, and I grew up watching Carson! People who say this is racism clearly don't know the definition of racism. Is it offensive to some people? Yes, so watch something that doesn't offend you. The KKK is racist, Neo- Nazis are racist. Don Rickles wasn't racist, he is a comedian making fun of stereotypes.
@soundmiami6 жыл бұрын
I had the chance to work for both of these guys on several different occasions and off stage they were both two of the nicest people I ever got to work for. Perfect gentlemen to the staff, crew and fans. But yes on stage Don could be brutal and was even more so in his prime. His mind was like a steel trap. Here he is falling back on some old stereotypical bits. After all he is 85 but he is still pretty quick. The weird part was back in the day people would pay a big premium to get front row seats because it was widely known he did his caustic ad libs only about the people sitting in the front row. They paid extra to be publicly humiliated by Don? I never understood that part. But for the crew who had to do 8 shows a week we loved Don because it was a different show every night.. Jay is what you see is exactly what you get.. very generous as he is here, feeding Don the set up and taking the hits.
@karsten98956 жыл бұрын
Interesting background information. Thank you.
@krusyaldabaoth95646 жыл бұрын
Well to be fair, this isn't Don at his most brutal. It was obvious that Jay was making sure he was being the wing man to Rickles' humor that was why by the time the so called band had to play some music and Rickles was building up momentum - the crowd of the time could accept the sensitive jokes but Jay didn't have to take any hits at all. You should see the talk show wars when Kimmel was on Leno. That was Leno taking hits. Jay just introduced the audience here to a comedian that poked fun at the audience. That's my hypothesis why you pay Don to be publicly humiliated. He was never a brutal comedian so when you hear his jokes it was like you were paying to be roasted for free. There was little malice on his part. All his so called brutal jokes don't come off like he has an agenda against you. It was good fun unlike the more modern comedians who'll really try to get at you just to create these big laughs at the expense of a person's belief.

You can literally see the softening of society. In the 60s and 70s, his ethnic jokes would've killed. Here he is in the 90s and the ethnic jokes are landing about 50/50. Nowadays, forget about it. Lisa Lampanelli was the last to pull it off.

@@dontayedaniels5710 Yes but his style is a little different. He always circles back around to a self-deprecating theme. Rickles and Lampanelli, however, made the ethicity-based "cut" the core of the joke. But the ethnicity in question could laugh at themselves along with everyone else. It takes skill to carefully craft and word a joke in the just right way to accomplish that.
