Very truly missed...Don Rickles. When he was first starting his comedy career, there was a show in which he was being heckled. So he gave it right back to the heckler. The audience loved it so much, that from then on, Rickles based his entire act on jabbing people.

Actually even earlier in his career when working the clubs in NYC he learned how to handle hecklers by getting heckled off the stage by another young up and coming comedian. .. Johnny Carson. " Now you know the rest of your story. " - Paul Harvey That's how I learned this, from the closing segment of Mr. Harvey's daily radio broadcast in the 80s. Of course it didn't take long for Don and Johnny to become great friends. I'm not sure if Johnny quit drinking or just had to watch himself but that must have been a sight to see ( Johnny out insulting Don ).

@@sun622 Are you sure? *All* covers a lot of different people from different walks of life. Take the first 10 years of his career--most of the places he played would not let black people into the theatre. Thus the "jokes" he makes at the start of this compilation about the woman in the front row.. He never really outgrew that, now did he? He was *not* an equal opportunity insult comic... and even when he did insult the Jews or other white people, they were in a position to laugh, since they could leave the theatre secure in their place in the social order. No so much for others from 1955 to the 1980s, when he was most popular. So don't pretend race has no bearing on this. Asking a black person to laugh at a black joke in 1960 is very different from asking a white person to laugh at a white joke at the same time.

Are there are still people that do insult humor? You wouldn't know it based on the cancel culture super sensitive world we live in. So what if the modern insult humor comics destroy people and walk away. Be thankful there are still some comedians left that have the balls to be edgy.

@@jashary15 To be fair Don Rickles used Negro and Jap. There is a compilation on KZbin showcasing his quote "most offensive insults." I agree Don was certainly not as rude as Richard Pryor or George Carlin however some people thought he went a bit too far sometimes. He did stereotypical impersonations of Asians that are considered offensive today. Jack Benny warned him "You're going to get killed" because he thought Don would end up making fun of the wrong person who happened to have ties to organized crime. Speaking of George Carlin, I think he described it best when he said crossing the line with the audience, making them uncomfortable is important in edgy comedy. The key is being able to bring them back to a comfort level. Modern edgy comedians fail to accomplish getting the audience back to comfort. You can be as nasty, rude and obscene as you want. Just don't forget to leave the audience laughing and cheering.

A joke can still be racist and offensive. Silence doesn't mean consent. People don't always complain because they don't have power to avoid consequences of speaking up. But you are right: Straight, white males were much happier not knowing (or caring) that others were offended.
@rft2001

@@humusiclab8974 Racial humor is part of our tribal identities, is most likely part of our genetic memory and is definitely part of our various cultural heritages. It's been around since humankind began. Some people are so hypersensitive and ill at ease with human nature and history these days that they go looking for things to complain about. We find different tribe's customs, dress, look, etc to be funny. Most of the great comedians did racial comedy to one extent or another. Yes a joke can be racist and offensive and I will agree that some humor can be hateful but depends on delivery and context. Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor both understood that and did racial humor. Neither of them considered Don to be racist. Neither did Whoopi. Neither did the Jewish, Italian, English, Scottish, German, Hispanic, etc people that attended his shows and were "insulted" and various comedians that knew Don. People who didn't dig Don didn't have to attend his shows. Don was part of a minority himself, he was a Jew and he made fun of Jews just like he made fun of everyone else. He picked on Italians all of the time and was beloved by Italians, even Sinatra.

@@MercifulExorcist Not surprisingly(it's fairly typical behavior), you are oversimplifying the matter and to a degree, even "whitewashing'' history. I lived during the era so I am not merely engaging in some theoretical or intellectual exercise when asserting that what you claim was, indeed, frequently _not_ the case.
