Passed the advanced exam on my second attempt thanks to your videos. I'm a commercial pilot, manned aviation and I must say I've struggled with some of the questions and before clicking finish I was very unsure about my results. The test is hard and even with aviation background preparation is required.

Congratulations on passing your Advanced exam, Paris!! Quite an achievement. The fact that a commercial pilot struggles with some of the questions casts a doubt on the suitability of the exam for drone pilots. I have a video coming up addressing this topic.

However, to date have not actually flown the drone due to so much uncertainty about where we can and cannot fly. As I researched our options, I stumbled across your videos and immediately subscribed after watching the first one. I'm now a few videos in and your channel is the best one out there in support of the Canadian drone pilot. Subsequently, I've purchased your app for iPhone and all I have to say is THANK YOU! Took two tries, but in the end, all the studying paid off and passed thanks a lot in part to watching Don's videos and learning what I needed to study. For those of you thinking of taking it... don't be deflated if you fail. I don't know anyone who passed the first time so you'll be in good company :) Each time you take the test it's different but if a question looks easy, be careful and read it over carefully... they can be extremely sneaky. That all being said - yes it's ridiculous and yes, 90% has nothing to do with operating a drone safely... but operating within the airspace is considered a privilege in the eyes of those who control it so I guess we just have to suck it up and play along... and who knows? Perhaps you'll be flying somewhere on vacation and the pilot(s) pass out from hypoxia and you'll need to land a 747 full of passengers on an arctic runway experiencing 200KT winds... you'll know how to land safely!

One of the major differences between a brushed and brushless motor. Is the sensitivity to ferros dust particles. Magnetic dust. A brushless motor can collect sand, dust or otherwise on the magnets in the rotor housing and SEVERLY impair operation. This is a thing in some areas, where you may have accidentally collected particles. Near mines in particular, but even your garage at home. Crunchy stuff. Brushed motors are unlikely to run into this problem.

Interesting and surprising. I would have thought that both types of motors have more or less the same amount of magnetic attraction.

Although some of the questions and content of the exam has nothing to do at all, with operating a drone. What they are doing with the information that is passively connected to drones, is to make YOU aware how air plane or helicopter pilots navigate, control their craft or communicate etc. I am actually a supporter of Canada's attempt to limit the morons out with drones. A $1000 fine at minimum is nothing compared to bringing down a manned aircraft with your toy and causing not only damages, but possibly death. Not even maliciously, but because you "didn't know" how close you are to aircraft, air space or what effects your drone could have on air traffic. Thank you for these videos they are a MUST before one even gets started with training. You outline key points and make a huge task manageable.
@DonJoyce Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Dan. Unfortunately, the real result of having exams that don't relate to drone safety is that many people are just not doing them....and so get NO safety related knowledge. This is the number one focus of the Drone Pilot Association of Canada.

@@DonJoyce very true, but then at least they are legally liable and can be prosecuted to the full extent of the law on a speed trial. Versus there just being lax laws and then you have to find out who is guilty how and what not. No different than gun laws. Only law abiding citizens that are good and reasonable people will follow the crumb trail. Evil doers take the shortcut, both parties can posses guns. I too have operated drones "illegally", but was responsible enough to know the law and respect boundaries, taking my chances. Now I am getting my full certification to show that I care and have the knowledge that goes past common sense.

@@palpillai6508 I would suggest starting with printing off the Knowledge Requirements for the advanced exam. Then start by reviewing Don's advanced exam video and each associated Module (1-8). I made my own pdf document from each of those videos or you can purchase his PDF document. Know section 901 from CARs thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with the AIM document, how to lookup information in that document. Know how to use Google, I can't overstate that enough, you need to know how to google concepts and terms very efficiently. Create a document of all maximum and minimum values for various flights pertaining to advanced flying. Air law section is 14 marks (not 10), so again thoroughly memorize all of those knowledge points, it will save significant time for harder questions that you may not be sure about. When writing the test have a piece of paper ready with two columns, one column for questions you completely guessed at and another for ones you are confident in but need a second look, then during review after answering all questions first go back and review the questions you thought you got right first and then if time permits the ones you guessed at. Human factors (aviation), type that into KZbin there are videos that will help with that section. If there are questions you completely guessed at, make note of them on paper. If you fail the first attempt as I did, review the sections you got wrong and retake the exam within 48hrs while the information is still fresh. Best of luck!

Being an RC flyer and an Advanced grade radio amateur (a VE for Industry Canada at one time), the basic was fairly easy. Can’t say the same about the advanced test, though, and I can’t thank you enough for your “must watch” videos! Great job on your videos! I went through the trauma of studying for and barely passing the FAA Part 107 certification (commercial) on first try here in the U.S. That's when I found out I should have studied and practiced more on the Navigational and Sectional chart...lol. We had to report to an FAA authorized testing facility with only scrape paper, pencil and memory, and if we failed we lost our $150 and would have to wait 14-days to take it again and plop down another $150! So I was definitely sweating it. So much of what you talk about sounds familiar and may be similar as far as general aviation knowledge. Being a dual US/Canadian citizen I'll be buying your study guide in support of the efforts you put forth in producing these fine videos as I study for the RPAS Advance test and look forward to the opportunity of flying my Mavic Pro later this summer in B.C...hopefully...lol.

Interesting comparison! Did you find the FAA questions "tough but fair", in the sense that they related to drone flying? So many of the TC exam questions are quite unrelated, or at best peripheral to safe flying. Hypoxia being everyone's favorite!
@Apachewolf5 жыл бұрын
@@DonJoyce Well lets put it this way, I though after taking the test I should have gotten my 1st Class pilot license and flown off in a fixed wing! Lol! I was surprised on how much I had to know about airport runway and taxiway markings, aerodynamics of fixed wing flying, so what that has to do with Mavic Pro I'm not sure. Trying to learn about how to read a Sectional chart was the toughest when one is new to aviation, aviation communication frequencies, then the weather portion would also apply to drone flying so those were necessary to learn. If one passes the TC advance exam, I think they will have a head start in preparing for the Part 107, and visa versa especially with the General Aviation parts.

Hi Don, Attempted the advanced Exam yesterday and FAILED, 78 was my score, one question short lol. It has been a year since I finished my UAV ground school and Basic radio course so I could get a standing SFOC (restricted) as I use an Autel XStAR for my crash reconstruction work and it is not an approved UAV by TC. I am going to watch your video, do some refresher studying, rewrite and then book a flight test, I am not sure if there is a tester yet in NB as some emails I sent out have not been answered. But at some point before June I will get that done. And it looks like there is a DJI love Hate relationship in my future. Hey Don , just had a question related to the new rpas drone laws. I ve bee using your resource materials and have found them very informative so please keep up the great work, I love the fact you are constantly adding new in depth material. My first question is , If say you are successful at completing the advanced operations drone exam are you immediately able to fly basic operations, 2 how long do you have to complete a flight review for the advanced portion , and 3 ) are sfoc's event specific or once aquired gives you the ability to fly at such events? I ask these questions as I am currently working towards a career as a first responder and would be a great addition to my resume thanks so much
@DonJoyce5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Answers: 1) Yes, you can use your Advanced exam pass for basic operations. 2) There is no specific time limit between the advanced exam and the flight review, but you need to have proof of recency within 2 years. After 2 years, you would need to pass an exam again (even the basic) or have some other form of recency (a video one day will explain this). 3) SFOCs are usually event specific. They used to have 'standing SFOCs', but that was under the old rules, and I don't think they have a mechanism for that any more.
