Since June 1, 2019, new regulations for flying drones in Canada require drone pilots be certified by passing an online exam administered by Transport Canada. This video Study Guide provides detailed information to help you successfully pass the Basic Operations level of the exam. The material presented in this video is derived from authorized sources, but is original work not to be reproduced without permission of the author. Everything is still applicable in 2023.
** PLEASE NOTE: there is one item that is not quite correct in the video. Around the 11:00 point, I refer to the maximum altitude above buildings as being above the ground. The actual rule is that the maximum altitude is the greater of 122m or 30m above a building. The study guide material has been updated to reflect this change. Here is a video that properly explains this rule: • 2019 Canadian Drone Re... **

Just passed my basic exam with a 94%! For preparation I simply watched your video twice, took a quick look over all the referenced materials to familiarize myself with them, and then Google and Ctrl+F did the leg work. Hilarious how little of my exam had to do with drones. Seems like it would be EXTREMELY easy to fill an exam with actual useful questions for done pilots to study up on to ensure safer flying. But hey, what do we know? 🤣 Thanks a million, Don! You're an absolute legend.

After watching your video, I brushed up on a couple of things and decided to take the plunge! I PASSED! If it hadn't been for you, I wouldn't have had the courage to take it. I'm the kind person who MUST pass on the first try! This video was by far the best out there. KUDOS to you and thank you very much! It's obvious how much time and effort you put into it. And I agree with your comments on what is applicable and what is not. 80% of my questions had nothing to do with drones or the safety thereof. I'll be sure stop at the designated lines on the airport runway the next time I'm on the tarmac flying my drone!!

I have my YEAH moment too at first try!😁 Thank you Don for your excellent and instructive video. Since English is my second language, it’s harder for me to understand the questions and answers. So after viewing your video I decided to take the plunge to see what kind of questions am I expected in the exam in order to focus on what to study. What a surprise! Lot of questions are not related to the drone regulations, which I’m sure a normal drone hobbyist has no knowledge about them; for example asking the type of turbulence, how to spot a dangerous cloud. I got 3 questions related to airspace class. Throughout the exam, I use extensively Google and CAR 901 section. I Google the answers instead of the questions and I used the method of elimination for those questions that I’m not sure of the answers. I used all 90 minutes allowed for the exam, and what a surprise! I passed the exam at 77% like you! 😎 Thank you Don! For those who hesitate to take the exam, my advice is use your common sense and safety first in your mind. You’ll be okay for the test. Good luck to everyone! Let’s flying our drones😁😁😁

I used ctrl-f on the different tabs with key words from the questions and passed the exam 1st try with 85%! Appreciate the time you took to make this video. Really takes the fun away from the hobby. I will do the test but under protest. The fact that they include so much that is overkill is ridiculous. I'm glad I don't have to provide records of all the maintenance etc on all my vehicles. Honestly disgusted with entire thing. Imagine having to have in your possession on every flight a log book , maintenance schedule, and god knows what else. I suppose the upside to all this is I will be carrying a pilot license that I can laminate and wear around my neck. Better start looking for a pilot hat as well.

You'll never in a million years be asked for your registration or your license unless you're really calling attention to yourself. I'm doing mine as well, but I really give a rat's ass about it. I've reported numerous cases of seriously dangerous drone operation in the middle of downtown Toronto (all different pilots, different locations and times). It's been two years, and would you like to know how many they've looked into? Zero. We haven't got the resources to police any of this stuff, and the funds available are decreasing, not increasing. It's all quite pointless. It makes good sense to have rules, but there is no reason for a test like this other than to make money (that will be spent on anything other than drone safety).

@@DonJoyce how long have you lived in Canada Don lol? You could write them until you had carpel tunnel that someone is dropping napalm on your home with a drone, and you'd have a better chance of winning the lottery than someone paying any attention whatsoever.

I believe the rule about height restriction above building refers to if you are flying next to a 50 story building that you are able to break the maximum height limit of 400ft if you are within required distance horizontally and not beyond the height limit above that building.
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Darrin. You are correct. Please refer to my more recent video regarding height: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioeqhIJmjrCCack
@drnda2007
@drnda2007 5 жыл бұрын
50 story building is ~200m so you can fly drone up to 230m and not be further than 61m away from the building. How's one going to measure this 61m is the question. There may also be a rule how close one can fly next to a building? Was it 30m? What are the chances that there are no people around that building when you are 230m high? So this would not be really applicable to any populated area again. This can only be safely applied to some remote area (silo, tower). This rule 30m above makes sense as there is a restriction for aircraft in relation to tall objects. Not sure what is the rule but is sure more than 100m.

Very good and insightful review of the test and what to expect. At 11:00, I think we interpret flying OVER buildings differently. If the top of a building is considered "ground level" then I think they intend to allow you to fly 30m (100 feet) above that level as long as you stay within 61m (200 feet) of that building. Otherwise, the criteria would be "Altitude NEAR buildings" and not "Altitude OVER buildings". Logically, manned aircraft are probably restricted from flying closer that 100 feet OVER a building and at least 200 feet way. Your thoughts?
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 5 жыл бұрын
Gary, I think you are correct. 901.25 (1b) says "100 feet (30 m) above any building or structure" which is different than the 901.25 (1a) statement about maximum altitude being "400 feet (122 m) AGL". Thank you for spotting this! I will correct the wording in the Study Guide PDF material and clarify in my upcoming walk through of all the "901"s. (ugh....that's going to be another long one!)
@Apachewolf
@Apachewolf 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought the same thing. I know here in the U.S. we can fly up to 400 feet about a structure within 400 feet of the structure. In Canada it looks like up to 100 feet above building within 200 feet, am I reading this right? I wonder if that's for any structure or just building?

Great Video! I was excited that you had put this all together for us, but then..... I'm a US Citizen, and before I prepared to take the Transport Canada Drone Cert Test I thought I'd register my drone first. While filling out the registration form, I came to "Foreign residents are not eligible to register or operate a drone in Canada. If you are a foreign resident and wish to operate a drone in Canada, you must 1. apply for a Special Flight Operations Certificate. (SFOC)" "Extra rules apply if you're a foreign operator (you are not Canadian and you fly in Canadian airspace). You must have an approved certificate to fly a drone for work or research " It appears Canada assumes if your not from Canada your not flying for recreation. 2. The SFOC requires non-Canadian citizens to go to an approved Canadian Flight School 3. Send the form and documents to the Civil Aviation regional office in the region where you intend to fly 4. I imagine insurance requirements will be next, etc. Such a shame for us hobbyists and Canadian tourism. I hope someday Transport Canada will become more reasonable.

Yes liability insurance is required for an SFOC. This has always been the case. Flight school isn't necessary as far as i know but training approved by TC is. This can be an online training as long as the certificate is recognized by TC. Some of these only cost around $200 CAD.

It is much harder than one would think, I did it last week and passed with 82% but there was a point where I thought I may not pass, question ranging from aeronautical maps to aerodynamics. In short, prepare before you take the exam. it is ridiculously complicated and unnecessary for 90% of the casual drone users.

So true! I did it last night - took about an hour and was "googling" the entire time. I was shocked at the complexity of the questions and the lack of relevancy - and even more shocked that I passed!

Another stupid law brought in to make criminals out of a lot of law abiding Canadians. We as Canadians should have refused to do any of this. The trouble with stupid nonsensical laws is they ensure non-compliance, don't make anyone safer and will destroy the RC hobby. There is no way my fleet of ageing RC planes will ever be registered, I still have one from the 70's. Imagine having to report everytime you repair a model? I'v seen trainers pranged and repaired numerous times on the same day. What difference does it make ? None? This bunch of regulations and the stupid politicians who dreamed them up need to be flushed down the nearest toilet as soon as possible.

I really think you are wrong. Drone in the wrong hands could possibly take down a plane and invading people's privacy and a lot of other things that you think are stupid nonsensical laws. What if your whole family was on the plane and died because of RC drone that was not registered.
@carson7947
@carson7947 3 жыл бұрын
@@charlesvigneau3701 that was already illegal. Existing laws already prohibited those things. Btw filming people on their private property is totally legal, as long as you are in public,and as long as they arent naked or in a washroom.

@Proton1 No. The drone laws themselves have been in development for years. In fact my understanding is they started work on them as far back as 2006. They started off being directed at commercial UAV and hobbyist use but when the mass produced consumer market started to take off around 2010 with increasingly rapid growth and a whole new plethora of emerging issues, it delayed coming up with final regulations until now. Even now, it's still being worked on in some areas. And no doubt, as with any government regulations, tweaks and changes will be an ongoing thing.

Hi Don, good video. But am I the only one who thinks the Liberals and their bureaucrats are out of touch with reality. Half the questions have nothing to do with drones or drone safety. I'm not opposed to drone safety, testing for a License, and registering my drone. At least all my boater exam questions pertained to boating. I already know who I'm not voting for this fall.
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, 4dino! I think you'll find you are not alone. That said, the political party of the day probably had little influence on the regulations. I suggest we direct constructive suggestions towards Transport Canada and see if anything evolves.

@@DonJoyce what really concerns me is how unorganized the study materials are. There aren't any governmental approved web sites or easy to use references. I'm comparing to the rules in Australlia of course, similar things and you have to pay annually for the registration. Furthermore they're also updating things so that you'd have to be accredited: www.casa.gov.au/about-us/news-article/drone-registration-and-accreditation-scheme-update www.casa.gov.au/aircraft/landing-page/flying-drones-australia

Thanks, Aram. Yes, I believe it is a combination of timing (they were pressed to get it out after Gatwick) and budget. What actually worries me more is that there are actually factual errors on the TC Drone Safety site. If you read their information about aerodromes and airports, it is wrong! Scary! (And yes, I have let them know in a constructive manner.)
