Being able to read and understand Canada Flight Supplement (CFS) charts is crucial for drone pilots in Canada. This video provides a detailed walk-through of the structure and meaning of a typical CFS entry, including explanations of the Obstacle Clearance Circle (OCC), the various subsections, and typical acronyms you will find.

Great explanation! @17:20 you talk about the V & U letters for emergency frequencies. My take on this is it's a quick identifier for the pilot to use the VHF (121.5) or UHF (243.0) radio for emergency frequencies rather than suff an other frequency in the box.
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! Thanks, Robert, I agree that is the explanation. That said, it is this kind of short hand / jargon that increases the barrier to newcomers and/or infrequent users of the CFS data. Certainly in an emergency situation, you don't want to be stumped by a codified frequency.

about the OCC if the tallest obstacle is 1215ft (ASL) I round it up to 1300ft (ASL) Why would the OCC be 2500ft (ASL) Shouldn't it be 2300ft (ASL)?
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon! I'm glad someone is checking the math, and your sharp eyes are correct! Based on what is shown on the sketch and the defined method, the OCC should be 2300 ft ASL, not 2500. Either they have done further rounding up for some reason, or there may be particular terrain features nearby that caused them to settle on 2500 ft. Not sure. This example illustrates how tricky these charts can be to interpret even when everything should be pretty clear cut. Thanks again for watching so carefully!

Your work is very appreciated and I'm hoping to write the basic exam soon. Question though. The obstacle avoidance circle is a bit confusing. Is it located where shown or is it centred on the geometric centre of the aerodrome? I'm suspecting the latter based on dimensions.

It is centered on the aerodrome's official lat-long....but there may be exceptions (which would be annotated as such).

Thank you! I'm not sure how much more detailed I could get. There are MANY variations in the exams regarding CFS chart information. Another great video and explanation. Easy question,,,at 7:59 it is mentionned that the tower is 1215 ft ASL. If it is rounded off at the 100s, than should the math be 1300 + 1000 = 2300 ft instead of 2500 ft? I must be missing something!! 😏 Thanks
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 2 жыл бұрын
Good spotting, Joel! Your math is correct. I'm not sure why the CFS says 2500...
@EmilyTestAccount
@EmilyTestAccount 2 жыл бұрын
So, if I'm reading the caution at 19:06 right, this is referencing high traffic around the Azilda water aerodrome, and Coniston regular aerodrome, and their respective ATF frequencies - also this is the first time I'm seeing a format of City/Community. Is that uncommon?
@DonJoyce
@DonJoyce 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are interpreting the caution correctly ("extv" is short for 'extensive'....why they think they're saving time/space with abbreviations, I don't know...). And yes, many CFS listings start with a city (eg, Toronto), followed by the aerodrome name. This way nearby airports are grouped together...I guess they imagine people casually browsing through...?

@DonJoyce 3 жыл бұрын
Left hand turns provide better visibility for pilots sitting on the left side of planes. Given that TC likes to treat drones like aircraft, I'm surprised their recent new procedures for operations near airports didn't insist drones only make left turns...per 602.96 (3)(c)...and land/take-off into the wind (e)!

It's TC Math! LOL. I agree, if you follow the rules you get the number you quoted. So either there's some additional 'round up to the nearest 500 foot' rule, or there is some other obstacle that we can't see on the chart. Good spotting and checking!
