I've has so many soap makers spit their pacifiers out because I won't give up my recipe/s. I would say they are usually new soap makers who haven't been around long enough to 'get it' but all the same, the tantrums. The stock recipe I usually give out is: 30% Olive 30% Palm 30% Coconut 5% Cocoa butter or Shea butter 5%Castor Semi slow trace, hard bar, full lather quality and great conditioning and moisturising. I always give this one out and probably 1/4 of my own stock is the same recipe. Many of the YT soap makes use these quantities. Part of the fun of soap making is formulating your own 'holy grail' recipe but some people just don't have the patience and want it without putting the effort in, a trait that seems to be increasing as time goes not.

A nurse that worked in a nursing home with me left our facility went to work for another company and called me up and wanted me to send her a copy of our wound care protocol. I told her no and she got very angry. I had to explain to her that I probably would’ve lost my job, maybe my license and that she could have been sued. She should’ve known better. So I do not blame you for being angry. That is your property. People need to realize that they do not have to apologize for that. You have done the legwork. It is basically intellectual property.

I'm a newbie too. I'm still picking up pieces of my head. Many recipes contain exotic, expensive hard to find butters and it's usually for 3 to 5 pounds. I asked for a simple bone head (or so I thought) recipe for 1 pound of soap and the forum leader lost it. Yikes! LOL. One of the members was nice enough to give me a bonehead recipe; Olive coconut and shea, coco, mango etc in any proportion you like and run it through the lye calculator. I may be wrong but I don't think I was given a proprietary recipe. (Shrug)

Newbie here too, I've been trying out some traditional, natural soaps like Castile and after some thorough research I've tried a recipe inspired by Marseille soap just yesterday. I've tried some experimenting with some tips I got out of books and some awesome youtube videos, but even when soapmakers give an exact recipe I can't seem to follow it to the letter, always end up changing it, run it through a lye calculator and try it out, and some turn out great, others erhm... not so much. But that to me that is a big part of the fun! I love experimenting like that and learning from the mistakes I make and improving my skill for soapmaking :-) Love your videos uncle Jon! :-)

Uncle Jon's DIY and Outdoor I know this video was from a few years ago but I’m just now finding & binge watching you. I thought I’d toss my 2 cents in just in case another finds you after I did & would like the answer also. 😊 The soap making was left to women because they were the ones that rendered whatever fats the men brought in from hunting/butchering. Usually when the fats were rendered any grease from cooking was also tossed into the rendering pot. This grease was kept in a crock or other container between butcherings, whether it was a month or 6 months. The soap was made at this time. This is why it was labeled woman’s work.

Hi Jon. I wanted to thank you for this video. I have been making bath and body products for over 10 years now and I did thousands of hours to do the actual research in order to make my product. Learning about the ingredients and what they bring to the mix, to design, to FDA guidlines, labeling and Marketing....and I still continue to learn. I don't mind helping folks out with the knowldege I have acquired over the years, but the things that are my own recipe are considered Intellectual Property. It took me a very long time and a lot of hard work and my own funding to get where I am at now, so I understand completely where you are coming from. My goal is to provide my costumer the best possible product I can make with the best possible ingredients. I want my customer to keep coming back for more, and to be able to develop a great working relationship with them. Keep up the good work! Thank you for all of your hard work and being able to share your knowledge with us.

A few months ago, I decided to explore soap making. Haven't made my first batch yet, BUT, I have been studying all of the info I can find, over the last several months. I will be making my first batch next week when all of the stuff arrives. YOU, sir, have been a HUGE help along the process. I am also a newer customer and Love your bath soaps. Through all of my digging around, I have to say, there should be No Reason for stealing someone else's recipe. That's just as bad as plagiarizing someone else's music or literary work. There are Plenty of resources, online or in the Library, to help someone get started, and all the way through the soap making process, even down to usable percentage ranges of what types of oils to use and what those oils contribute to the recipe. So, that being said, I will be attempting my first batch, next week.... My Own Attempt At Making A Recipe in Soapcalc. Thank you, Jon, for all of the pointers. Wish me luck, Lol.

Hey, I purchased a recipe from another soap maker. I know how to formulate etc but I just loved her recipe after purchasing her soap. I also asked her for permission directly to sell and I will never claim it as my own. I think its a very grey area. If someone uses another person's recipe and takes all the Glory for it then they need to rethink their morals but I think if you fully respect that a recipe isn't your own, get permission from the other person, never claim that it is your own, I don't see a problem with that. I agree fully about pricing as well as you need to know about what it is you're selling. I think the bottom line is, if you're going to use another person's recipe, show some respect.

Amen! Thanks for sharing That! I spent my first year of making soap only using M&P, getting as creative as possible. In the meantime I read and studied cold process, learning as much as possible before the "scarey" mixing of Lye! I finally did it, making my first batches this past August. It's people like you I respect and feel that after spending lots of time, money and a few "yucky" batches of soap that had to get thrown out, I got my basic formula just right (for now), I really don't want to give the information away. I studied the oils and their properties, I researched my additives, I put it all together, I tried and failed and tried again. So thanks for saying what you said in this video, I appreciate it!!!

I appreciate the basic recipes that have been shared so I can learn from them. I'm also giving credit to the original soap maker for the recipe as I have posted my results and when I sell those bars after they've cured. Once I've made a few more soaps with a few different recipes and see what I like and don't like, I plan to tweak them to find my own signature recipe. I agree that I need to be putting in the work to make my soap my own. It's actually part of what appeals to me in this business.

Here's a term most people don't understand, it's a legal term that factors into EVERY business. It's called "INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY". We as humans, are creatures of habit, pack animals, who like to stay in our own comfort zones, so basically it's been said that there is only 9 original ideas on any one thing, and everything else is inspired by or copied from something else. Being inspired by... Oh hey that's cool but I'm going to tweak it my way, great. Fantastic. There's plenty of room for individual expression, that being said... Copying what someone else did exactly, and selling it as your own, is basically stealing, its dishonest, and is not different from actually taking it from the person, that makes you a thief. Asking and expecting Others to do the brain work, physical work, the expense of ingredients and testing, and then to had over their knowledge, experience and intellectual property for free, is lazy, incompetent and shows they have no Personal character or integrity. It's one thing to ask about ingredients or supplies, as in, where did you get that color, scent, or mold ??? Or... I tried XYZ and I had an issue could you recommend something that would work better etc... But your ideas, your thoughts, your creativity is your intellectual property. And if someone else is getting pissy because their too lazy to figure it out, then that is on them, and they can go suck on a lemon. Sorry, I'm a bit of a vocal Babushka, I don't Sugar coat nothing. This GramMaMa, yes like Endora, had to add her 2¢ and verbally fling a slipper. I might be a day or a few years late, and a dollar short, but better late than never. ♥️🤗

I completely agree with you. There needs to be morality and honesty in ones business approach. However, such qualities have to be built over the past and one is not born with it. This either comes naturally based on your past or you have to try hard and pass lot of personal hurdles to imbibe it. Unfortunately, there are not many of such types and this species is near extinction as most want an easy way out. I love your thoughts, Sir. God bless you.

Your time and knowledge is valuable. There is a huge difference in someone doing this as a hobby or trying to make Christmas presents for people. If a person is trying to do this as a business they should have the respect the hire a person as a consultant and pay whatever your fee might be or if to high then find someone else with a lower fee. But you get what you pay. Either learn through the school of hard knocks or pay someone what they are worth for all the short cuts. Or try working six months for free as an apprentice. Being this is a trade and there aren't schools to learn this trade, it's up to those the have the wisdom to help reach because I just can't figure out the calculators. I've been pulling my hair out trying, searching internet, looking for books and it just doesn't exist so....here I am wasting a ton of money with hundreds of failed attempts because I don't know anyone to help teach me but that's ok. I realise this vid is years old, but I would like to contribute to the discussion. I recently bought a recipe on Etsy, and whilst it didn't cost a fortune I was disappointed to discover that it was just a 3 oil soap recipe that is available for free all over the Internet. To add insult to injury, on looking at that author's website, the list of ingredients she lists for her products are NOT the same recipe as the one she sells. So I would add "don't be a jerk - don't swindle people by selling publicly available information as if it was your own".

Of course all soap makers inspire each other. But inspiration is one thing, copying recipes or ideas another. Half the fun is designing recipes and styles, three quarters of the fun is experimenting. 100% of the fun is succeeding with a design or recipe. I am not sure why people copy other's recipes, maybe it's their insecurity.

Just wondering what you package your laundry soap in & does it hold the wait. We sell it in our recycle buckets that we get our aloe Vera gel, lotion base products in. But am interested in selling in smaller amounts. What about bags?
@unclejonssoap

We use tin tie coffee bags. These are the one pound coffee bags and they hold 2 pounds of laundry powder. They are also lined.

Do you recommend any of Ann-Marie's books? Soapqueen and CEO of Brambleberry? I like BB since they respond as fast as you do to social media. I hope you don't think I am riding coat tails here but I am genuinely lost and afraid to get started. But I will watch your lye safety video
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap 7 жыл бұрын
TheWhitePhoenix2 sure! Her books should be good if they are anything like her videos. I think the first thing you should probably do is find a recipe that's already done so you can just concentrate on making a few batches without worrying about figuring out how to formulate just yet. once you are comfortable with that part, then you can work on how to come up with your own recipes. 😁
