This is why I watch you, because you listen, you try and you aren't afraid to put your hands up and say you were wrong. Its refreshing and awesome to see, it only makes me respect you more as you also explain clearly and politely your opinion while still being willing to listen. More people need to be like this, its nice to see!

Welcome to the buttery side. I knew you would like it once you tried. With its high stearic acid content and its low saponification , shea butter is great for shaving soap.

Refined kokum butter has really no smell and still terrific face saving benefits. Just a heads up.
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
I figured. Just like refined shea butter. I just tend to like the unrefined better in some other products. So, I figured I would give it a shot. If it smelled too badly I would just switch to refined stuff :)

It looks like you make great shave soap. I actually only make soap but one thing I do is gear some of them specifically to being able to shave with it too. Some work better then others but the ones that work better then others at shaving is when it ALSO has grapeseed oil in it. I usually find that a combination of a carrier oil, a butter, and grapeseed work well. Grapeseed provides a slick surface. I am not actually completely sold on shea butter giving a good shave (in soap anyway. Mine is not made like yours). Cocoa butter along with a little grapeseed works. As for the smell, in soap anyway, my cocoa butter smells like a huge box of the best chocolate Hershey syrup. It can affect the soap but it has only been temporary. None of them smell like chocolate anymore. As for the benefits, I have heard your opinion before and here is my take on it. If butters do not give any benefit then that would mean other oils do not either including Pine tar. How does pine tar soap help people with excess then. I was told personally by the step father of a child that that was the first time she slept all night without scratching? I have simple bars and I have even made bars with Argon oil or Abyssinian oil. Great for natural hair conditioning by the way. Which brings up a point, "Why would these be great for hair and why does hair feel better and more conditioned". Why would your hair react to the oils and your skin doesn't? I say, I do feel a difference. Some give a feel like a natural smoothness such as lard or tallow. Some give a conditioned feeling of smooth softness like Argon, or a slick conditioning with some skin softening of cocoa butter or Olive oil (clean but less so). If you can't tell the difference with your skin then let your hair do the talking for you. Your hair will react differently to each one. For example, Shea butter feels much different then cocoa butter. And as further proof, People who have beards, such as you, have to use a beard conditioner. Many people do anyway, when you buy that stuff and look at the ingredients, it is the same as what we put in our soaps so the soap will actually do the same thing. Once I learned of this angle, I talked a co-worker into using my soap because it had the same thing. He bought a bar. His beard looked better from day one.

Yep I made some shave soap with Shea butter soap (no additives) so that I didn't have to mess with lye and it works fine though I have to say John it's a little weird seeing a fellow with a huge beard talking about shaving LOL!!

I put raw unrefined Shea on my face and like the smell. Shea scent never came through in my soaps but cocoa butter did and it did clash with lavender and rosemary EO.

Yep... I don't want the oil scents to compete with the fragrance or essential oils...lol. But, I do like some butters in my shave soaps now 😂

I'm hearing things about adding clay to bath soaps that it's supposed to be great and all. What are your thoughts on clay with soap.
@unclejonssoap4 жыл бұрын
I like some clays in some soaps. It's a diff6feeling and can help harden some bath bars up a little. Just don't add too much or the lather will suffer. Also, stay away from adding clay to any soap intended for shaving. It doesn't do much and the hardcore shave crowd won't touch it.
@joshuamedina72924 жыл бұрын
@@unclejonssoap the soaps i make contains 30oz of oils and 34 oz of water(i make small batches for myself and family) the soap logs turns out to weigh 2lbs 10oz how much clay should i add I'm planning to use bentonite clay.

Are you going to combine the shea butter with the tallow formula?
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
totalanthony yep! This recipe that I just lathered is both. Love it!
@shermdog69695 жыл бұрын
So tallow is basically the same as shea butter without the smell?
@unclejonssoap5 жыл бұрын
Well.. it's a fat that's great in soap. They're different in some aspects. Like tallow if beef fat and Shea is veggie. But, yeah.. I get no smell from the tallow in soaps. Butters can be a bit over powering in some soaps. I tend to use a combination of both now. I've come around on the butters a little because they can be nice. Just gotta keep that extra scent down...lol.

I used to make a shaving soap with bentonite clay and powdered oatmeal but I discontinued it, it just didn't seem like a real shaving soap. I been wanting to make a real shaving soap for the holidays for a the last couple of years but I just got a real good deal on the bores hair brushes so I'm doing my research and trying to find what people seem to like best in their shaving soap.

how much volume do you end up getting?
@unclejonssoap7 жыл бұрын
+Salvador Suazo not sure I understand the question. The lather builds nicely in a bowl or face lather. I think the volume depends on a bunch of factors.. type of soap, brush, water, technique... I think it pumps up really well if you used enough water. Our soaps tend to be very thirsty so there's lots of room to adjust things like volume and cushion. I hope that makes sense.
