Narnia has an interesting bit about this. “Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." [Mr Beaver said] "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion." "Safe?" said Mr Beaver. "Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”

I think there are several forms of respect. What you’re describing is respect through fear. It’s important for workplace relationships between boss and subordinate. However there is respect through admiration where one is so impressed with a person’s accomplishments that they show. There’s respect for status ie respect your elders. Using fear to motivate us often a sign of weakness. If you’re strong enough and powerful enough people realize it’s in their best interest to follow you. Ie Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. Respect for their purpose outweighs their fear of these larger than life -personalities.
@monkeyboyalcoholic
@monkeyboyalcoholic Жыл бұрын
I think it's simply human nature that the respect you are describing fades over time. Respect for one's purpose places an impossible demand on someone. People are human, they fail and make mistakes, and struggle sometimes. The notion that a partner will care for you only when you succeed is frankly very discouraging. More importantly, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos are tough acts to follow in terms of purpose driven lives. This didn't stop their partners from discarding them.

By definition, power => the capacity to do harm in some shape or form. "Harm" does not necessarily mean physical harm or active psychological abuse. A person you admire can harm you simply by ignoring you or not giving you any time or attention, so you feel rejected and unworthy. They can also choose to manipulate you for their own ends by exploiting your admiration. What would make them more worthy of respect is the knowledge that they have the capacity to do that, but choose not to.

Theres an idea during a period in Roman history known as Pax Romana, a period of relative stability and peace throughout the region. This peace was only through the war machine of the Roman Army. Without that, the region would plunge into warfare as it had centuries prior. All peace comes through war, or in the case of individuals, the potential to cause harm. Only in peace do men have the option to even want to be more loved than feared.

I think going for the fear based respect actualy gives a whole lot if power to the person you're trying to gain respect from..... if that person builds stronger self confidence (which we should all want for our "subordinates" so they can become a better and better part of the team everyday) he or she can easily grow out of the fear that he/she gets from you... I for one don't care at all if my boss slacks me, girlfriend goes away, because I feel confident I can find another job, another partner or I can easily survive without both for a while... I think competence based respect is much better for human interpersonnal relations. If someone falls for fear based respect, he/she actualy signals that they are not that self confident that they could go by without you.... I would much prefer someone that is self confident and respects me because he/she feels I'm worth to be part of the team.

I respect you enough that I listened twice before responding, but I don't fear you and I think this one was a miss (possibly by semantics/delivery rather than content, but I'm not sure) I cannot say I have ever felt what I associate as respect with anyone I have ever feared, although if you mean by respect something akin to "aware that caution and situational awareness are necessary when dealing with" then fine, but any cooperation, compliance, or support to such a person is situationally limited and transitory, and if they fail, I feel it as no loss. On the other hand, I had great respect for my grandparents, and strive to incorporate the positive things I remember of them into my life. I do not fear them, and to the extent that I ever did it was less that I feared them than that I feared my own failure to live up to their model (for my own sake, because I suspect I could have totally failed and they would have still accepted *me* while pushing me to get back up and do better). True respect is built on a desire to emulate rather than fear IMO. Having said all that, I agree that not everyone sees things the way I do, and there are certainly gaps in my understanding on this topic. For example, I have spent most of my life trying to be an unassailably benevolent harmless rock that makes things around me better, and I've had to learn the hard way how much people take advantage of that to my detriment (and I'm still discerning unsuccessfully how to maintain solid boundaries and inspire the respect of others without compromising beneficence, so there's definitely a gap in my practice). Interested in hearing your take on the above thoughts, either in response or in another video. Cheers

Respect is a personal choice one makes based on their upbringing, background, social influence, etc. Fear is imposed This is even more pronounced in relationships as respect can quickly be withdrawn
@Leoo117

Fear does not equal respect. If someone is treating you well only because they are afraid of you in some capacity, they are not respecting you. They are FEARING you. A person that truly respects you is going to respect you at ALL times, even at your weakest and most vulnerable. It's toxic to yourself to hang around those that have to fear you in order to treat you correctly. This way, it's not a paradox.

Respect, however, is an earned choice. I disagree with this one. If you ONLY base your power in this fearful respect, you create resentment and as soon as the other person can leave he/she will. Respect is also and preferably should be based mostly on competency and actions that create admiration. Example in point: I "respected" my old boss because he had a lot of power over me and made me feel very little, but as soon as six months in I was looking for another job.

What is your advice for women in the workplace with bully bosses who play mind games? They have positional power, it's not easy to find a balance when you can be fired easily. They do whatever they want with no consequences from their higher-ups. People just end up quitting or causing an increasingly toxic workplace because they can't "hiss" back and especially can't "bite" back! It's easy to say just find a new job, but how am I winning if I am forced to leave a job I wanted to keep just because I have no power over my boss or company? They could care less when people leave and will bully people more when those people hiss back.

@Jmacdonald2386
@Jmacdonald2386 Жыл бұрын
It could be a paradox, there are many things in life that are paradoxical. However, in this case there really is no alternative. The idea of having the “capacity to cause harm” I think is a simplification of the core message. Which I think essentially should say “have the capacity to be capable”. In this way it doesn’t assume physical capabilities, or fighting capabilities necessarily. I believe it refers to being capable in general. Whether that is capable in your thoughts and actions, having the ability to be resolute in your speech and to speak with integrity. Or it could mean being capable as a husband or father, which to me means one simple thing…taking responsibility for someone ahead of yourself. That makes you a “capable and dependable person”. Anyway, that’s how I think of the whole idea. Because the opposite of those things wound be someone that is incapable of being depended on. Or someone that nobody trusts to keep their word because they haven’t built themselves the integrity and character to keep their own word. A person who does something as simple as always keeping their word, we all know someone like that, those types of people are incredibly capable, and looked up to by others to handle whatever life throws at them. The other idea was caring for others, being able to put another person’s needs before our own makes a person incredibly capable, and builds character as well. The opposite of that would be someone that everyone knows will always choose themselves first, the type who never sacrifices, always the first to make everything about them. I guess what I mean is what choice do any of us really have in life but to at least try to not be the opposite of capable. The thought of what that looks like is terrifying

@trueomen5017 *"If I have a capacity to cause harm just to chose not to do it, then how do other people believe that I can cause harm for them to have a respect for me>?"* This is only a problem in theory, because in practice it resolves itself sooner or later in various situations. 1. Your supposed "harmlessness" is put to the test by some bully who harasses, threatens or otherwise mistreats you. You defend yourself against him in effective ways, be it with words or physical violence. 2. Your inner willingness to represent or even assert your interests is reflected in your body language, facial expressions, words and actions. 3. Your relationship partner or employer wants you to do something that you don't want to do and/or that you are not contractually obliged to do. They want to impose their will, intimidate you, blackmail you (also emotionally) and *you leave the relationship, never come back and look for and find* a new relationship partner or employer. Now they have the damage.

That's a question that's probably too big to answer in a comment. So perhaps I'll make a follow up video on the subject. However, a good rule of thumb is, in any relationship, the one who needs the other less has more power. So, if you're having difficulties with your family, a good first move (if you haven't done so already) is to make yourself as self-sufficient and independent as possible. If you don't "need" your family for anything (i.e., money, love, support), then it becomes more of an "at will" relationship, in which it becomes easier to assert and maintain appropriate boundaries.

I do not respect those who value having the power to hurt me... that's awful... If you enjoy being bad... it's probably because of those who are good being willing to help those that need it most... so you're given attention for being a brat...

Of course, most people would agree that we should have more respect for those that choose to be harmless out of their desire to help others and to do right by them. That’s exactly what the basis of the idea comes down to, it’s the person who makes the decision to be a decent, moral human being because it is the right thing to do. However, it’s important to take note of the way that some people will trick you. They may even genuinely and truthfully believe that they really are decent, moral and treating people right because it is the decent thing to do. However, if that person has not done the work throughout their lives to build their own sense of personal integrity, their own sense of values, their own code of ethics, and their own sense of responsibility to put others before themselves, in other words if they didn’t make the effort to become a person of true character. What we end up seeing is that they are incredibly weak minded individuals underneath a facade of doing actions that make them seem decent and caring to others. This type of illusion can go on for decades in some people, believing they are virtuous, decent and that they choose to be that way. The problem is that sometimes incredible hardship or threat to life will affect that person for the first time in their lives which is when we they discover that they were never actually “making the choice” to be decent and harmless. In fact, they were never capable all along of the integrity and morality necessary to do the right thing when it truly counts, which is in the face of hardship. That type of person was basically putting on a show but lacked the ability to truly put others before themselves when times got tough. The world is sadly full of people like this who are absolutely not “choosing” to be decent and to never hurt people because in reality they weren’t actually capable of it at all, the truth always comes out eventually, we see it in modern times with what they call “virtue signaling”. The propensity for a person to constantly talk about how they are charitable, or kind, or helpful to others, or that they empathize with people suffering. All the while, that person doesn’t possess any of those qualities they claim to and instead their actions show a completely opposite, person with integrity, character or virtues.

Your comment makes no sense. If someone CANT harm, then obviously they didn’t CHOOSE not to be that way. I don’t think you’ve thought about this concept much.

" There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment (some versions say punishment) The one who fears is not made perfect in love." 1 John 4:18 if we truly love, and are truly loved, there is no fear present. This is the way we are called to love each other, not to seek power over each other. " Cultivate that side of yourself that has the potential to do real harm to others" you say, this is straight out of Satan's notebook. The advice you give is the thin end of an evil wedge.

These are all lovely quotes, but this episode is about respect -- not love. Those are two different things. Like in the Ecclesiastes quote, the basis of respecting the commandments is the fear of divine justice. If God did not have the power to judge, who would obey? Perhaps some would, out of a love of the good. But many others would not. The same is true secularly. Many people respect the laws of society because they fear the consequences of breaking them. This is the basis of social order.

Who shall we fear of? If you have the fear of God in your heart, which is a good kind of fear, I would rather call it respect, you have nothing to fear of, because you have God at your back. Your only fear should be, loosing it. If you loose it, you can fear of everything, especially the definite death, the death of the soul. This is why Saint Paul says:"Do not be afraid of those, who can kill your body, fear of those who can kill your body and soul aswell". Because if the soul goes astray, the body goes astray with it. You can only serve one master.

Is fear truly the basis for respect? I respect Martin Luther King, but I don't fear him. Where does fear fit into that equation?

No, I agree with the about 90% of everything you’ve ever said I absolutely disagree with this one. I’ve been teaching the difference between commanding respect and demanding respect, half my life, and you got this absolutely wrong possibility of violence is demanding respect which doesn’t always work fearlessness encourage in the face of dangerous Creates respect in all aspects of life

Does not seem to make sense. You have all these followers and clients who respect you and listen to what you have to say. Yet I doubt most fear you or that you could cause harm to them. Also when you have been in an accident and unable to leave your bed it means nobody would respect you anymore as you are in no position to harm them.

"Command" respect? More loads of crap. There are hierarchies in every relationship and social setting. People, you had better understand where you stand in relation to others before you try and "command" respect, or you just might end up fired from your job, or punched in the face.
