The caller Elizabeth thinking she can earn 80K as a newly graduated entry level hire at any Interiors firm is pure fantasy. Someone fresh out of Interior Design school will commonly be hired as a lowly Intern charged with very basic tasks to assist the more senior designer staff. If she moves to a state where Interior Designer is a licensed professional, she will have to start a formal Internship and work a few years before she can take the qualifying examination that allows her to use the title "Interior Designer". She will likely be earning a starting salary anywhere between 35K - 55K at an Interior Design firm. Maybe a bit more in cities where the cost of living is high.

George is probably my favorite personality too! But I have to call him out on one topic in today’s show. He was talking about taking social security right at 62 and investing the amount for compound interest. I thought that once you took ss, you are limited on how much you can work and earn. My reading is that there is a $17,000 annual cap. This is why many people postpone taking ss until 65 or 70, because they are higher wage earners and make way more than $17,000 plus the ss check. So George, unless the person is semi-retired and can live mostly off their investments, your plan might not work. Most of us need the ss check, some work, and some investment income to maintain lifestyle. I had a big issue with Jade and Rachel giving out blatantly incorrect info about financing long term care last week. And feel also that this advice today is not fully incorrect, but missing a very important caveat. The personalities are great on budgeting, baby steps, etc. But really need to be careful to not put out false info to millions of viewers.
@nekojamesp9 ай бұрын
George and Jade were wrong on several points. Once you reach full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want and not have SS penalized. BUT it's going to be taxed at a higher rate since you're adding to your income, cutting into any potential gain from investing it in stocks. Taking SS at 62 while still working makes no sense. And that's just one factual error - another is that you only get back what you pay into SS. Not true.

Loved the "Tacky" or "Hacky" segment in this video. Very insightful!
@Trustbutverify26519 ай бұрын
Liked the segment on Hacky vs Tacky.😀 If you split an entree, however, be generous with the tip. For the two of us, getting one take out entree and splitting it at home (with no bother cooking or clean up) can be just about as cheap as cooking because we are Seniors with smaller appetites and we can usually split one entree and even have some left for a light lunch the next day. But personally we don't split entrees if we go out to a restaurant because we don't want to short the server from what could have been a larger tip while taking up just as much of his or her time and effort. I have often told others trying to get out of debt to order an appetizer and ice water - they can still be with their friends for a lot less money. (They're usually the ones who are thinner, too...) Absolutely NO splitting checks!!! Usually the people who propose this are the ones who are benefitting. Treating another couple is a different matter - that's a gift. True story: I had a teacher in my department who moved to Florida with her husband and they were back within a year. She couldn't find a teaching job and so she worked as a server in a restaurant. She said the Senior citizens would come in, split an entree, drink ice water, leave a dollar tip, and then strip the table of everything that wasn't nailed down on the table (napkins, Sweet and Low, ketchup packs, etc.) She couldn't make any money there and swears there are whole rooms in apartments in Florida full of nothing but what has been grabbed off the tables! No, personally we don't take the extras. We feel like if you need to do that, you should eat at home. My daughter worked as a server and got so frustrated with people who would have 3 or 4 drinks and then leave a miserly (or no) tip. Couldn't they cut back ONE drink and leave a better tip?
@BeeDee-qs9so9 ай бұрын
Interesting! My father would have never allowed us to even take the soap from a hotel room. If we weren’t using the item “at the time and in place,” it wasn’t ours to take home as a freebie. I enjoyed that segment too. George and Rachel do segments such as these quite often on their Smart Money Happy Hour, and I find them fun when I get a chance to watch.

@nekojamesp9 ай бұрын
Exactly right. Some of George and Jade's SS advice was alarmist. I sent this to George: As one Boston guy to another, I hope you'll reconsider some of your recent advice on SS. We both agree that it is NOT a retirement plan, and may be unstable in the future, but I'm not sure your advice to take it at 62 and invest the payments in the stock market is wise for many people. For one, if you're working full-time, there's going to be a big tax hit (tacking social security onto an existing income), cutting sharply into returns. Also, someone between 62 and 70 likely shouldn't be fully exposed to the possibility of bad market year or two at that stage of life. A more conservative portfolio, as most advisors would recommend, is not going to reap a 10% annual gain. In addition, I think Jade said social security has a 2.8% annual return. Not so - it's more like 8%. And you do not get back only what you paid into it. Depending on your lifespan, you can reap much more. Again, SS is not something to rely on, but it can be an important part of an income stream. Please don't tell people to collect it at 62 and invest it in the stock market. That is too risky for most. Otherwise, you're doing a swell job! I'm a Massachusetts liberal who can filter out the religious/Trump-leaning sentiments of some Ramsey content and appreciate the common sense approach to getting out of debt. And yes, I am debt free, with or without a scream. Thanks.

Not $56k! There’s a much lower limit until you’re full retirement. Income limit below full retirement age (67+ for most who aren’t collecting yet) is $22,340 in earned income for 2024.
@rheedo18 ай бұрын
George, I’d love to see the figures in your fuzzy math. You’re assuming that you invest the SS payments and never touch it till age 80, it will add up to $1,450,000. That’s a huge assumption. Not too many people can do that. Taking SS early at 62 while still working is penalized and taxed, especially if you’re a high earner. Your social security check is reduced again when you turn 65 because they deduct your monthly Medicare payment. That “extra money” you’re receiving to invest is therefore reduced even more, but does increase again when you hit full retirement age if you’re still working, 67 for me, because the penalty for working while receiving SS is removed. There are two reasons why the average SS payment is so low, you stated $1700/month, they opted to receive SS early and/or they didn’t earn a lot. Personally, I’m going to bet on myself and wait till I’m 70 to receive SS and work beyond the age of 70. For every year I delay SS, my payment is approximately 8% more. I enjoy what I do, yet still have the flexibility to take time off as needed. The break even point of delaying SS versus taking it early is age 80. I’m expected to receive $4873/month in SS at age 70 and my genetics suggest I’m to live till I’m 90. I’m dependent on SS. For me, it’s not “social insecurity”. I hope to have my retirement plan payout $4000/month. As far as having benefits reduced by 20% in 2034 is an assumption. The republicans are considering cuts to social security, that’s a political death penalty. The baby boomers will vote them out of office. Congress will increase the SS tax to cover any shortfall.

To add to this, if you are working full time and start drawing social security at 62, you are going to be subject to an earnings limit. For 2024, there is a $1 reduction in your SS benefits for every $2 you earn over $22,320. At that point, not only are you locking yourself into the early withdrawal rate on your base Social Security but in the following year your SS would be decreased and you would not have the same amount to invest. As a hypothetical, using the average SS of $1700 at age 62 that was cited in the episode, a person working full time making $50,000 would have their monthly SS check reduced by $1,153/MO the following year, leaving only $547/MO to invest. With you on that point @nekojamesp!

If you make over 100k you won’t get social security at 62. They reduce your benefits until you are at full retirement age, while you are still working. You will not be able to invest the Social security if you’re not eligible to receive it based on earned income. The idea to invest the full SS benefits while still working will not work because you make too much money. They reduce the benefit by one dollar for every two dollars of your benefit. If you make three times what your benefit is at 62, you make too much money to qualify for the benefit. You all had made this argument before. Most earners working at 62 can’t qualify for SS if they make 6 figures.

I wouldn't be so sure - there is a lot more to consider than this duo is telling you, and choices also impact the spouse (greatly, I might add.) Keep in mind that all the "personalities" except Dave are quite young. Not every Senior on social security would give the same advice. I have yet to meet a Senior who didn't wish he or she had waited until 70 (if they could have afforded it), especially true if the social security income is on the lower side. A major bill, such as a medical expense, can put a huge dent in savings, but a larger social security check later on can make a real difference. The young folks on RS rarely consider how medical bills and such can change an entire financial outlook in your later years. It pays to do your research on this and there are some excellent books out. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any or this comment will get booted off.

The daughter from Mexico is great for caring enough about her parents future. With $23,000 US and if they spent $14,000 for a car that leaves them with $9,000 US in savings, no debt, and 3 properties and his $3,000 US a month in come. Awesome daughter!❤

I’m rolling when she talked about giving Lucas a whoopin…I’m thinking of that episode of the office where Michael Scott’s nephew, Luke, got a whoopin in the middle of the office🤣

I feel bad for Michael. My rent and utilities are also about 1750 a month, and I bring home $4,400 a month. I'm a single woman with no kids or pets. I can't imagine having to support two other human beings with my current income. I'm just getting by.

Thank you for sharing. Financial education is crucial today to show incredible resilience and discipline in the volatile market, masterfully balancing strategy and insight for success. This dedication to continuous learning is inspiring...managed to grow a nest egg of around 2.1BTC to a decent 15B TC in the space of a few weeks... I'm especially grateful to Linda Wilburn, whose deep expertise and traditional trading acumen have been invaluable in this challenging, ever-evolving financial landscape..

The problem with George's theory on taking SS early is that if you take it early, it limits the amount of income you can make from working.

That sounds great to take SS early and invest it. But at 63, I'm still working full time and my understanding is that I would be limited on how much I could earn if I take it now. I don't want my earnings to be limited.

I don't think the divorcing guy realize how much his wife's income, which sounds like it wasn't much did contribute to keeping them afloat. Jade is right he's gonna have to sell the house and get something more affordable.

I’m a total Ramsey fan BUT I believe George’s comments about taking social security early (at 62) were misleading and inaccurate. Up until target retirement age any work earnings over $22,320 will reduce the amount of SS you receive. Here’s what SS site says, “If you are under full retirement age for the entire year, we deduct $1 from your benefit payments for every $2 you earn above the annual limit. For 2024, that limit is $22,320.” Taking retirement early and investing all of it doesn’t take into account what you are going to live on. For me, I’m investing social security after reaching target retirement age so I’m not limited on what I can still earn.

This was mind boggling advice that could spell disaster for many people. I hope they correct it.
@Trustbutverify26519 ай бұрын
I've made many comments about this - and almost all of them get removed. The problem w/ taking SS early is that no one knows what costs will be around the corner that will wipe out investments, especially medical costs. Taking SS as late as possible means at least one source of income that is relatively stable b/c it would political suicide and a nation-wide riot if SS were done away with completely. I would rather take my chances on taking it later for the maximum amount (which is what we did) knowing at least that amount we can count on coming in each month. We have found that with no debt and a paid off house that we can actually live on very little and even if medical debt or some other unforseen disaster wipes out our investments, we can still manage very nicely on our SS.
