First off- Dannie* has ZERO remorse or apologizing for these click bait titles she's been coming up with- they give her a good laugh and she doesn't care who she annoys in the process! Today I'm on my way back from Toon Town to the Peg cause Dannie* has some 7-11 Nachos waiting for me! Listen, you can hate how I build cars and you can hate the primer, the hood scoops, the merch, the breathing, the wheels, but you CAN'T hate just cruising in an old hot rod. There is nothing that beats that feeling, so that's what we are doing today.

Thanks for a fun road trip! Back in 72 I used to road trip my 71 dodge 340 from Marquette to Ann Arbor to pick up weed. First stop was Sunoco to fill up with Sunoco 260. That 340 really woke up & was a blast to drive! Got stopped one time on I75. State Trooper said he followed me for 20 miles & I was averaging over 100 miles per hour! Had 2 pounds of weed in trunk & was smoking it from Ann Arbor to Cheybogan where I got stopped. He didn’t mention the smoke & knocked the ticket down to 20 over! Some fun!

FYI Dan… I road tripped my big-block Chevy Biscayne (461 cid/ 500hp) from SW Florida to Colorado, ran Rocky Mountain Race Week (going up Pikes Peak and back down in the process), and back home… FIVE THOUSAND miles! She ate a lot of fuel for sure, but never missed a lick… Ask Drag Week John about it (our mutual friend) 😁

Dan, have you looked at the Progression Ignition Distributor? It's programmable via an app and lets you adjust everything, including vacuum advance, and timing using your phone, while driving. So you can lock it out when you want and use vacuum when you want. Also has an anti-theft feature threat will kill the ignition via the app.

Progression Ignition Distributor. Set all timing with your phone. Drive, while watching at the active settings, change timing while driving. No springs, no weights. No starter kick back while starting at 10 advanced, up to 50 degrees adjustment after start up. Set timing for RPM under load or for cruising.

The second you said you were leaking oil from the valve cover I knew that they had no baffles. You can fashion baffles out of a piece of sheet material and JB weld them to the underside of the cover. I've done this on stamped Moroso covers a couple times with no problems. Also I used to heat soak and destroy starters until I wrapped the headers.
@corvettejohn4507
@corvettejohn4507 22 күн бұрын
Yes on the baffles. I've made those for most of my valve covers out of cut up license plates. They are good for that. And don't forget a PCV valve, or turn an old junk A.I.R. pump (aka smog pump) into a crankcase vacuum pump. Or you can put A.I.R. pump one way check valves on your header collectors to pull vacuum on your valve covers during cruise.

In the old days it was called a road draft tube. Simple concept that keeps the valve cover gasket from leaking or blowing out.

Some valve covers you can run a breather cap if you are not running a Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. Aka PVC that reburns the crank case fumes so it doesn't contaminate the oil or actually blow up the engine as those fumes are volatile and will ignite. Being a big block with power a vented valve cap is not going to keep up. It leaking because to much compression in the engine that has no where to escape. Your gaskets on your valve covers, both front and back intake manifold and harmonic balancer and rear engine seal n oil pan will leak. Before emissions they would run a pipe with canister that was packed with brillo pad. Then they re introduced those volatile fumes into the intake system to get reburned. Dan you need a PVC system.

I drag raced big blocks from 60's through 80's altered Hilborn injected then two different blown alcohol funny cars. A 468 then a 540 Rodeck. Always my lady would be cleaning the oil off the windshield after a pass. Same trouble, Valve cover leaks even with big 1 inch hoses routed through frame rails to rear breather puke tank. Of course made worse by the 10 -71 blower over driven 40%. Never did cure it but valves run after every pass, more gaskets and silicone and retighten. Good luck buddy from retired west coast big block guy

Well done, Dan. A couple of thoughts...a PCV valve as has been suggested will help with the oil no matter what valve covers you run. The ultimate fix is a belt driven vacuum pump but they ain't cheap. I ran one on a extremely healthy 368 SBC years ago and it was good for 15 HP on the dyno as well...better sealing. A good starter should be able to crank that thing with 33-34 degrees of timing when it is hot...maybe a heat shield on the thing, and make dang sure your battery cables are good, and ya got a high cranking amp battery...

Dan just hook your distributors power wire to a toggle switch so you can run all the timing you want, and when your ready to start the engine, just wind it over with the key and flip the toggle and it'll run, and never drag with high timing again...

Dan, if you use the vacuum advance the way you talk about using it in the vid, your total advance at wide open throttle is only going to be 22 deg. (what your initial timing will be set at) because the vacuum advance adds nothing at WOT. That will kill your power. What you need is a non-locked out distributor with vacuum advance. Set it up with 20 deg. initial timing, have a mechanical advance curve that adds 14 degrees all in by 2,000 rpm. Then add the vacuum advance to ported vacuum to give you additional 10-12 degrees for better gas mileage during cruise. Set up this way you will have 20 deg. at starting, 34 deg. at WOT, and around 44-46 deg. cruising down the interstate at 80 mph. The extra timing at cruise will add at least 2 mpg if not more and lower engine temp.

I believe that if you did not lock out the distributor and put a relatively fast advance curve coupled with a working vacuum advance hooked to ported vacuum, you would be a lot happier overall. You have a drag car setup on a street car.

Hey Dan I'm sure you know this and if not it will help you splice into your hot wire going to the distributor and put a toggle switch and keep it off turn the engine over hit the switch you don't have to fool with the timing it's easy on your starter I use that for locked out distributors and high compression engines I hope this helps you.

You want more than 32 timing at cruise because of the leaner mixture at cruise and idle. It will also run cooler because you won't have a much heat soaking into the cooling and exhaust. 12 or so initial, 32-36 total mechanical, then an adjustable canister which mine could only go down to 14 . Manifold vacuum and try it. I am telling you it makes a huge difference in how it drives.

I thought that when you ran manifold vacuum for the dist advance that when you crank to start you have full timing and when the engine is at idle running it will pull the timing back. when you apply throttle the manifold vacuum goes down which will let the dist advance due to the vacuum decrease.

10 mpg? On the highway? I used to have a '75 Ford F-250 with a tool box utility bed on it. I carried parts and tools in it. It weighed around 6200 pounds. Had a 390 four barrel/C6. got around 8 mpg in town, but did 12-14 on the highway. I got rid of it mostly because it had no A/C in it, which is not good here in Phoenix, AZ where it is 110+ degrees F half the year. No snow though. 170-180 degrees is great. Most new "cars" (or whatever you want to call them) run around 220-225 degrees. I have 165 degree thermostats in all three of my old cars. I run two of them unpressurized. Go to a Lowes or Home Depot and get a piece of pipe insulation. A lot better than those pool noodles. Should last forever. And get a Garmin GPS. I see Canada has a lot of tailgaters too.
