Let’s be real here, you’ve already watched Linus’, Steve’s or.. Steve’s video on these new chips. You know how they perform and how they compare to last gen and Ryzen 7000. So let’s shake things up and do something a little different. I’ve spent the last week overclocking and testing the i5 13600K to see if it’s even worth doing - and I’ve found some rather interesting results.

Tom's hardware did an overclock on the 13600k at 5.6ghz on an rtx 4090 and it matched the 13900k stock in most games. So the reason you aren't seeing gains could be a gpu bottleneck not the cpu

@@obamalastname34 Whether you will have a bottleneck or not depends entirely on what you are doing. If you are doing something GPU-heavy, then it's most likely to be the GPU that is the bottleneck, and if you're doing something CPU-heavy, like e.g. code-compiling, CAD or such, the CPU is going to be the bottleneck.

maybe its actually worth it to buy a 13600k , for a DDR4 system in case you got a ton of fast DDR4 laying around, and just clock the snot out of it, for a 3090/4090 system. at least if you dont need the 14+ cores of the big chips, and only really game. ALSO, PLZ start telling people what system you test in, its a bad trend that more and more reviewers are forgetting this. Put it in the intro or text under the video. we need details, or comparisons to our own stuff is imposible.

Yeah buildzoid turned off e-cores and got the 13600k to 5.6ghz core 5.4ghz cache. Can only imagine what you can get with hyperthreading off as well maybe even 5.9ghz core. There are some cheap z690 boards out there too that can be combined with crazy fast ddr4 that’s pretty affordable compared to ddr5 low end memory.

Trying now to OC my 13600K in an Asus Prime Z690-P. But it won't allow me to change the multipliers in BIOS and all the options are greyed out in Intel XTU. Only when I use the "OC tuner" option in BIOS, it then increases the turbo boost freq to 5.2 or 5.3, but that's it. The CPU still runs at stock freq. What could be the problem? I have to switch something in BIOS to allow OC?
@FlyingCsongor
@FlyingCsongor Жыл бұрын
Update: Problem was that I had to update the ME drivers on the motherboard downloaded from Asus. After that OC was working. Now my 13600k runs at 5.2-4.1 GHz with -75 mV undervolt to get temps under control. This also keeps power draw under 150W. Now I'm content with my setup, won't do more OC, at least not without a proper watercooler.

@@PokèMyBalls Although I've always built my PCs for gaming, I didn't use them for it very often because I was exclusively a console gamer. I fully crossed over to PC about 2 years ago. Haven't been able to afford a new build until recently. I should be good for the next decade now, as long as I periodically upgrade my GPU. Also, I never had any interest in AMD platforms, although I used to only buy AMD (ATI) video cards. I don't remember why I was so loyal to them, but maybe they were better back in the day.

The powerlimit slides/analysis at the end of the video are flawed. Setting 120 W limit will have no effect on most games as the power draw when gaming is way under 120 W. My 13600K pulls 25-65 W when gaming (144 fps cap) running at 5.4 GHz on pcores at 1.20 V. At those settings, the CPU will not pull more than 130 W at full load in CB23, so a power cap isn't needed anyway. At default my mobo was applying a massively excessive 1.36 V at load, when actually it's fine at 1.16 V at stock, and 1.20 V at 5.4 GHz on all pcores. Most boards will do the same. The best gains come from removing the mobo overvolts applied by default.

I dont think its fair to draw conclusions about the cpu performance in gaming, when you tested with a 3060. People buy cpus for >5 years, so if you upgrade the gpu later, the cpu is still the same. You should test with a better gpu
@FinalStigma
@FinalStigma Жыл бұрын
Well, from the results I saw from other testers, the conclusion is if you're using anything less than a 4090, then you're not gonna see much of a difference with CPU performances at higher res because those would depend more on the gpu. And since he's pretty much only testing at 1080p and 1440p low to high res, there's really no point in using a 4090 to see the differences in performance. Besides, he already said in the beginning that you probably already saw those kind of tests from the more popular testers, so he's just gonna do something different instead.

I neither agree nor disagree. I just think that claiming ´not to bother overclocking the 13600k´ equals saying ´save your money, get a B760 board and get a 13500 instead. But I guess people want to have the option (so do I), so it´s perfetly valid, regardless of it being better out of the box. Not being judgemental here. I myself am still deciding between 13600k and 13700K. I had just 2 PCs in the last 2 decades. Hence my preference for a long-term i7. But If I were planning on changing every 4 years or so I´d pick the i5. Maybe I will, cause I hate watercooling.

Im pretty sure your OC was far from stable. For 5.7 Ghz should need at least 1.4v(of course silicon lottery needs to be taken into account) core voltage to be fully stable. 5.5-5.6 Ghz all core seems to be the sweet spot and run pretty stable even with just 1.3v(manual set) vcore. The E cores should be left alone, as ocing them adds 0 gaming performance. Ocing of the 13600K makes definitely sense(as it's even faster than the 12900k afterwards) and every K series buyer should use this free performance. Still a lot of people believe into the myths around "ocing is bad for you CPU", completely ignoring that such SKUs are made to be pushed to their architectural limits.

Agree with most of the other commenters: this is a bad test methodology. It’s a red flag that the system is gpu bottlenecked if fps is exactly the same between configurations (undervolt, stock, OC). Therefore the gaming benchmarks here are totally irrelevant: the rtx 3060 isn’t good enough for this test. The productivity numbers tell the real story: 10-20% uplift with OC. Up to the viewer/reader if that is “worth bothering”.
