Great information and entertaining story about how best to behave when passing through customs. One thing I wanted to mention from my own relatively recent shipping experience is the cost of shipping Balikbayan boxes at least from the US depends on where you're sending from and where the final destination is in the Philippines. I shipped 5 boxes when I moved to Dumaguete last September and it was 140 US dollars per box. I didn't live on the west coast so it's likely a bit more expensive to transport the boxes from the interior of the country to a port and then there's also additional cost for shipment from Manila to Dumaguete after arrival in the Philippines. Something else that viewers may or may not have noticed is the best method to prep the boxes includes completely covering them with good quality shipping tape. The boxes are heavy duty cardboard but they will get exposed to significant amounts of moisture during the journey and the tape definitely helps to preserve the structural integrity of the box.
@PaulWorldZoom Жыл бұрын
Yes, a ton of tape is necessary. Go overboard on it. That is a lot on the cost. I usually hear $80 to $120, but not bad. Thanks

Ouch..expensive lesson! I'm surprised he got mouthy with customs/immigration being Australian. The Aussies are one of the strictest countries in the world when it comes to what you can and can't bring in. I saw a woman get 'ripped a new one' by a female officer in Sydney over an apple she was given as part of an inflight meal. Found in her bag she admitted she got it on the plane the officer said "not allowed it will be siezed and destroyed as a biohazard." Passenger said "No I got it on the aircraft you are not taking it." Officer told her "It is a prohibited item it IS going to be siezed. If you refuse it will be taken from you and you'll be issued with a fine for making a false declaration on the card you signed saying you had no prohibited items!" Aparrently they have a lot of problems with Asians bringing in Asian Food and medicinal items like plants and seeds! These people in uniform can ruin your day in so many ways! Thanks for the information about cellphones and Balikbian boxes. Very Useful😊

I have been to China many times before Covid and brought my pain medication and gifts for my ex girlfriend, and I never had a problem there. I had more trouble bringing things out of China then anything else,and they also held me hostage in the airport for three days when I leaving in November of 2019.

That's a great point you made about Customs and Immigration officers. They are indeed law enforcement officers and have the full authority to enforce laws within their specific jurisdiction. A Philippine customs officer can search almost anything - including you! And immigration officers actually have statutory arrest powers. Some foreigners have learned the hard way that Philippine immigration officers have the full authority to deny you entry into the country at their own personal discretion if you become verbally abusive or insulting. Too many people mistake these people for powerless low-level security guards. I see far too much bad behavior at airports - especially from Americans. It's never wise to argue with or insult any airport personnel including an American TSA agents, regular security personnel, ticketing agents, or flight attendants. Any airline can deny you boarding, and any plane captain can bounce you off his aircraft. If you have problems with these employees, take it up with their supervisor, the corporate office, or your attorney.

Yes, my Filipina wife told me about it from what the moving company in Davao said to her which was to deliver my items in Davao. Therefore, we took care of putting the shipment in her name. I am assuming Filipinos get a break from customs while expats don't. All I know is that I only paid a quarter in customs fees on my shipment of household items with a lot of expensive stuff than I paid on what I carried in my luggage when I flew through Manila. I was soaked by customs upon arriving by plane although the customs agent only opened one bag. Thank goodness I did not argue and dutifully paid since I had much more in my other bags like real Gucci purses and shoes and designer dresses for her. She's probably the best-dressed Filipina in Davao. I never buy fake stuff.

You do want to bring small bills for the purpose of eating or buying things at a international airport on your lay-over. For example Japan you pay with US dollars but get change back in Yen so if you don't have small bills you will receive alot of Yen that you don't need, then have to exchange it back to US dollars at a reduced rate. You will be paying to much for anything you buy. So bring small bills to get close to the actual cost and get only a small amount of Yen back in change. When you return to the US you have the same issue. You can use a credit card to avoid this, but getting a small amount of Yen you can give to someone as a souvenir or keep yourself. I have small change from many countries as a keepsake of my travels through those countries, if you use a credit card you wouldn't get that.

One time coming back from the states my friend said he had nothing to declare when he had one bottle of whiskey which would of been fine but he got hauled in and they tore his car apart and found the bottle and he then had to pay a fine. When I moved here I brought what I needed and all my meds. I did ship 2 boxes here but didn't include the meds in case the boxes got lost. I was told I could put anything in the boxes except electronics or power tools. I had them shipped to a friend. As for the money I brought a set amount below what I would have to declare and my bank gave me mostly 100's but some 20 and 50. Most places would only exchange the 100's at the higher rate the others they offered way below the rate.ltook back the smaller bills and later found a place that exchanged them at the full rate at a money changer at Ayala mall in Cebu

Extremely hard to find a money changer change them without it, in my experience. So now I only steal the new hundreds from people when I rob houses before my trips. Wait, I mean.... I always check the 100s before I leave the bank before my trip. 😅 And absolutely correct regarding not bringing small bills.... extremely hard to find anywhere that takes US currency for payment..... even if you offer triple the cost.... no joke. The shipping boxes.... I've used them. Great for anything that is not time sensitive. And like you said regarding your experience with time, I always figure AT LEAST two months for delivery. Bring some cleaning wipes with you. Notice when you pick up your baggage at the airport. Some of your boxes have X's ❌ on them. Those boxes went through a scanner x-ray. You have questionable items in the box. The customs may open these boxes and charge tax on some items or take them. Clean the airport workers markings off your box. Then customs won't open them, cause trouble, make you wait. And you can never seal up the box like you did before.

Why do they say loose lips sink ships? If they talked too much (had 'loose lips') they might accidentally provide the enemy with anecdotal information that might later cause their ship to be tracked, and bombed and sunk, hence 'Loose lips sink ships. ' Later, it came to mean any excessive talk might sabotage a project.

Hey Paul, I saw you on The Filipina Pea channel. She has a lot of good information on her videos but I've never heard about this shipping method! Balikbayan boxes are purchased where? Would you know if they have boxes big enough for guitars? I disposed of 7 of them but couldn't give up 3 of my babies... I'm moving to Dumaguete City in May and I was told not to ship anything as it was too costly. And what about diabetes and blood pressure meds? I've decided to ask for a 90 day supply until I hook up with the American VA. The docs have me on about 11 different meds supposed too improve my health, but it seems to me us old vets are being used by pharmaceutical industry much as they use guinea pigs in a lab... I'm not wild about trusting the pharmaceutical industry... Hey man, sorry to chew your ear off! Have a great day!
@PaulWorldZoom Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for that. They don’t treat the BALIKBAYAN boxes very nicely. I don’t think I would try guitars. The shipping takes about 3 months. No worries with meds. They are available and not too expensive for diabetics. The VA can be difficult. The pharmacy orders take about 1 week from Manila to Dumaguete. Thanks so much

I researched a while back and every place I checked was super expensive while Xpats were saying these huge boxes were shipped from the states to the Philippines for $99 but I never found them even near that price, it was way higher. I sent my Filipina a very small box of items about 5lbs and it cost close to $90 using USPS.

Yes you can send balikbayan box as many as you want. If you have expensive items in the box make sure you’ll write everything to the papers that they’ll give you and they’ll give you the copy so in case someone will steal it the company will be liable.

@@Chris-wp3ew you can sealed and tape them in your house. I used scotch masking tape and tape around the box to protect it from the moisture or wet surface, make sure you don’t leave space inside the box fill it up with used clothes or towels or else it will deformed the box before it reaches the destination. Also write the sender and receiver’s addresses outside the box before you tape it. I’m a filipina and I send lots of balikbayans boxes to my family and poor neighbors.
