I am 56 and have ZERO plans on ever converting a bus into a home but yet I just spent 36 minutes watching how to do it. Passion is why Judson will be a success in whatever he does, passion to create the best, no matter if it is a bus, a you tube video, or just a flight on his paramotor. Don't ever lose that passion kid, it will serve you well.

YES, you hit the nail on the head with your comment! Just turned 60 and absolutely love the idea of a bus conversion, but realistically I probably never will. That didn't stop me from watching and enjoying this entire video.

Hate to say but, you could've bought 120V outlets that have 2 USB ports built into them, I put them in my place and use them all of the time. Easy upgrade where you need it! Excellent video, pls stay safe, thank you for sharing.

You made some great points in this, I currently have a bus very similar to yours, 30 ft midsize, I made a video about the topic of vehicle choice as well and I agree with what you said, especially with things like painting the bus making a difference, I had to do the paintjob as the first thing to get it registered, it definitely becomes yours once you do that. I see people smile ear to ear almost every time I drive it around because it looks clean and unique and I highly recommend a clean build for many reasons. Some further info I can give is that: - havelock wool just came out with some more rigid batts of wool insulation that might be good for buses, and should be pretty much the best insulation option it seems in my research. - I was told that insulating the floor is not that important, because you can put some removable rugs down and have the rest of your bus insulated without losing much insulation value and still have warm feet. - Signature Solar is the best place to go for your energy system in my opinion, I can also help people get a discount if they want to use it, their equipment is the best middleground between victron and renogy in my opinion and according to the people I have met in buses. - I recommend a 48v electrical system for maximum efficiency and scalability. - If you are having issues deciding on a style of bus, I recommend going to some events that have people in buses to see them yourself like going to the tinyfests. - Handicap buses are often really good choices because of a few reasons, they usually do not have wheel wells to build around, they have less seats to have to remove, they have wheelchair mounts/L track already installed, they might have a functional Wheelchair lift on the bus, They have an extra wheel chair lift door on the side of the bus, they can often be taller on the interior, mine is about 6'5"-6'7". - If you need a place to convert the bus, there are places called "makerspaces" where creatives share tools and space and share a cheap membership to get access to tools and sometimes even classes about different skills like welding and metalwork, there is also a set of makerspaces that is currently expanding around the country called Wanderlust Waypoints which I believe are primarily intended to support bus builders with space to build, experts to support the build, and ofcourse lots of tools. Let me know if anyone wants to discuss this stuff further or collaborate on anything...

Wow Judson, great video. I too have no interest to restore a bus yet found this very informative. I’ve followed you for some time and find you to be an interesting and very talented guy. I especially like your haircut. You went through the entire bus build explanation without running your hand through 😊it to keep it out of your eyes. I say this because having had beautiful hair myself, growing old, and losing mine, I’m flat ass jealous of your “do!” Keep up the good work.

Your bus looks awesome Judson - awesome work & thanks for sharing the video. Re: wiring - why not stick in some extra PVC tubing into the walls (in addition to the planned cables & pipes) so if you want to pull wires through the walls later, you can (using a fish tape).

Something to consider when building a banging solar and electric system WITH air conditioning, is that the solar panels will add an extra layer of radiant protection from the sun hitting the bus roof. I converted a bus in 2002 and while this represents a seriously solid build, it would not be for everyone. If you are prepared to do this kind of build, as Judson said, do NOT scrimp on the bus you buy. The uplift will be way more expensive than the bus and you will regret putting $30K on a $3k bus.

Makes me want to sell up and get a bus in the US! Come a fly Wales and see my bus with no wheels which is 120 years old. An old shepherd's cottage. 😁

Years ago I looked hard into doing one myself. Didn't go through with it because I'm so tall I'd need a roof raise and then nobody will insure it because the vertical CG changes. At the time, I couldn't find a company that would insure.

I would not recommend a flat nose bus. They're not good in accidents at high speed they are mostly meant for city buses that would have low-speed collisions😮

Awesome video. I’ve been watching you (and Tucker) for a long time. Any issues with insurance or registration on a schoolie I’m still deciding on a schoolie or an overland, pros and cons to both but I’ve got time to think and plan.

Great video thank you. I’m looking at a bus - coming from the truck camper or rv towable trailer world. I think I would design “the wall” between living and driving areas to be strong enough to provide some safety isolation from flying household objects and appliances in case of an accident. Is there a good place on line to look at design methods for this?

Good info. Do you recommend a generator backup? What total KW would you recommend for inverter? Do you recommend using something like a complete system like a eco flow pro.
@JudsonGraham3 ай бұрын
Really the absolute only reason I would need a generator with my setup is to run the block heater of the engine (≈1.5kwh to heat up the c7) and if my batteries were low, which would probably be most likely during a cloudy cold spell. Otherwise I’ve really never had to plug this in. I would definitely just buy your own parts. It’s much cheaper and I can’t see where a complete “kit” would help out that much. All your wires will be custom length. You’ll have to mount your Solar yourself (Skoolie.com has a kit) then get a solar connector kit, make your runs in to the charge controller, plug in the battery and boot it up.

If I was going to build a bus, I'd do an EV restomod. I can MAKE electricity no matter where I am, I never have to come in except on my schedule. Imagine being able to forget about fuel because its everywhere and anywhere you go. ;-) I am beholden to nobody at that point, especially now that we have at least three ways to get decent internet off grid in most cases.

He's challenging Don'B to build a bus without watching this video
@jackcole11203 ай бұрын
I don'b think that's the case...I'm pretty sure he had a typo when spelling BUILT and wrote BUILD on accident...and his name is Don'b... and he's speaking in third person. Don'b built this bus without watching this video...because that would be factually correct. And if you don'b see that's obviously what happened then you must be a retar'b.
