Don't Build a Flip Top Tool Stand, THIS Tool Storage Is Better

To help organize my wood shop, I built an alternative to the flip top tool cart. This one allows you to store your oscillating spindle sander inside an existing cabinet, and pull it out and lift it up to a comfortable working height when you need to use it. I'll show you how I built it and how I got the measurements so you can build your own.
Did this video inspire you to build something? If so, I'd love to see it! Please tag me on Instagram @full_steam_designs and Facebook @Full Steam Designs

I really love your tutorials and have notifications activated to ensure that I never miss one. You have a unique gift of easily overcoming potentially troublesome issues. May I ask one big favour please? Any chance you could wind down the rock music in between narration, don’t get me wrong I am a fan but I do find it just a little too intrusive. I realise I’m probably in the minority, just saying as I don’t think it needs to be that loud. Cheers.

Man, you just made my life a living hell hahaha I have been designing my fliptop cupboard for the last 2 weeks and now I come across your great video and it has told my design to get lost hahaha A video really well done and the project is amazing, thanks mate! Also, I went to look at your channel and saw you have a few videos only. Judging by the excellent work you have made, like the table for your mitre saw, you should make more videos... Holy crap. What a great solution. I use a wheelchair in my small (garage) shop and have been struggling with coming up with a flip-cart design that would accommodate my sander (I have the Bauer (Harbor Freight) branded version of the same sander) as well as my DW735 thickness planer since space is at a premium. At my height, getting enough flip-clearance and not end up with the sander table too high is difficult. I spent the last two days making a cart with the DW735 on top and the sander on this type of lift and the result is fantastic. It puts the sander table at just the right height (essentially my slide out drawer is just a flat tray with sides - no riser necessary) and stows away easily under the planer when I don't need it. The only drawback is that I don't have much clearance behind the sander with the planer there, but I've never needed that really and with the weight of the planer I can pull the drawer out a bit to offer more clearance if the occasion does present itself even though the whole thing is on a rolling cart. Thanks for this idea!
@FullSteamDesigns
@FullSteamDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea. Have a mobile cart with your planer on top and this sander below it. I wonder if somehow you could fit 2 tools below the planer. They could each come out on the sides so it wouldn’t block the planer from being used.

Have followed with great interest your "under the workbench" project and must state = for stationary, fixed (large / long) workbenches with sufficient free space under the work surface, your idea / implementation is certainly a gain, absolutely! BUT - if you have to get along with little space, stow machines and move in the room, the flip-top cabinet also has its justification. You just have to adjust the proportions, if necessary implement a handle for more safety, the larger machines you attach to the turntable and you just have to be careful when changing the tools / turn the work surface. In any case, I would not use the statement "THIS is ...". Conclusion: It is a pleasure to watch you implement your projects, have already taken one or the other suggestion, thank you for that! Please keep up the good work!

I was going to build a flip-top for my spindle sander and belt sander. I have VERY limited space and having a flip-top would free up some of that space but this concept is much better. I can have 2 or 3 bench top machines lined up along the wall and with this "flip-up" idea I wont have to drag the flip-top out to access them. And that also gives me much more, valuable, work bench space. Thank you! Glad I found this.

Thanks for a great idea. I have a Blackstone 22" griddle on a pullout in my outdoor kitchen. The only complaint I have is that it is lower than my counter height. I am going to re design the pullout and incorporate your lift system to bring it to above the counter, a better height for grilling. I will write back with the results. Cheers

Nice build. I made a flip-top stand for my planer/sander, but incorporated a drawer in the base. I keep my accessories in ziplock bags inside the drawer so nothing gets lost. I am mixed on this. This is another storage solution but it doesn't eliminate the need for a flip top design. Filp top design allows for two machine to be held in a smaller footprint on the floor. Most shops have more unusable/wasted vertical space. Floor space is at a premium always. Still a cool design.

Great job and fantastic idea! I just started building a base cabinet to store my bench tools in and to have a work surface to use them on. I've looked at flip tops, ceiling tracks with pulley or winch lifts, and even lifts similar to yours. I finally gave up and decided to keep it simple by placing to tools on pull out trays and just lifting them manually onto the bench. Your idea is by far the best I've seen, and I'm so glad I stumbled upon your video. I'm sure this application will work great for at least some of my tools if not all. Thank you so much!
