The only time I put more than 2 hinges is if it's a really big and heavy gate

Yea. People will just say, "use bigger hinges" but on heavy gates (especially privacy ones that suffer way more wind stress) you're either plugging it full of fasteners (which looks janky) or carriage bolting it (which tends to end up turning into a bunch of slop). Hinges have weight ratings but people forget it's more than just the weight of the gate. The force of it swinging shut, flexing in the wind, (or god forbid) swinging in the wind because it didn't latch.

Try comunello 445-90... They're a weld-on unit, they have longer as well which have a top and bottom weld piece, which I think are 445-180.. both are rated at 800kg per hinge. That's a heavy gate! About $35 per hinge, why people don't worry about them. But do it once, do it right, get the recommendation from them to their mates about your work quality. Don't have to show them the breakdown, $70 for 2 hinges... No thanks. The dearest I've seen are $140 each cost.. 6036 aluminium, fully adjustable tension from nothing right up to slamming a gate shut, they've lasted really well for about 5 years now and the customer hasn't come back with any complaint. He might also be retired from life, was quite old when we done the job, got it perfect for his needs... But dunno, he had a pretty feisty woman at the time by the sound of his life story. I listened, I was getting paid to sit and eat big, sweet oranges from his tree and listen to some old bloke who had much to say about everything, whether politically correct or not. Anyway, buy big and throw an extra $100 on every quote for overheads, whether you need to or not. It'll pay for the time you need it but didn't quote it.

Go look at commercial or farm gates.. 2 hinges. When I do big gates, I just buy hinges that have a higher rated load and also have brackets that extend further from the edge. This guy's hinges barely make it into the 6x6

With 3 hinges, the second that post settles or those boards warp the slightest the gates going to bind. The heavier the gate, the faster it’s going to happen. The amount of companies gates I’ve had to repair due to this is ridiculous. Just learn to build a gate right.

I am a cad technician for fit out companies I spend most of my days reading spec sheets and I can confirm. These hinges tell you “heavy doors need more hinges” and the size of the door is irrelevant more will not bind if installed properly which isn’t hard to do.

Your right, easy to install properly. Its the making mother nature cooperate that is harder. Make the soil not compact/erode, keep water out of the wood so it doesnt warp....etc.

Standard gate kits I have used come in both 2 or 3 hinges most companies just prefer to use the 2 hinge kits to cut down on costs.

House door hinges come 2 to a pack, but always take 3 hinges. Middle one doesn’t bind up the other two, either

The middle hinge will* bind up if the door ever moves positions......which can happen for a variety of reasons, that's why he said not to use 3 hinges. My view is if hundreds (probably thousands) of engineers have determined 2 hinges is the best for doors I am going to stick with their research.

Just like a door, it depends in the size and weight. For example, a hollow core interior door only needs 2, but a solid wood exterior door needs 3.

Mine was never a hinge issue. It is always a post issue. Put that post down below the frost layer. Not just 2 ft with concrete around it. The posts needs to be solid.

Nothing wrong with it: Sure. If your fence posts are set properly, ground swelling do to freeze thaw cycles aren't a problem, you don't have frequent drastic humidity changes. For a Building door - set inside a set frame, especially if it's a steel frame, but - a properly built wood frame is pretty much just as good - the issues you will get are basically zero: Especially if you have a temperature + humidity controlled envelope that frame is apart of. The problem with a fence gate is: All of the problems found in paragraph one can apply. If ground swelling during a freeze/thaw occurs it can cause those posts to twist unpredictably, and the more points of contact you have - the more likely you are to get a bind. Same goes for if you lack proper clearance between the gate and the adjoining fence posts.

It's generally recommended to install three hinges on a wooden gate, especially if it's large or heavy. The extra hinge helps distribute the gate's weight more evenly, reducing the strain on each hinge and preventing sagging over time. For lighter or smaller gates, two hinges might be sufficient, but if there's any doubt about the gate's weight or size, opting for three hinges is a safer choice.

I’ve always heard that if you use posts that are adequate to carry the weight of the gate(s) and if you get the posts down below the frost line, to prevent heaving, then use the number of hinges that is optimum to carry the gate without over stressing the hinge, maybe two, maybe three, then you take the time to align the hinges properly… Well yeah. I guess it all sounds like a lot of work, but I’ve always heard that doing it right the first time means you probably won’t have to do it a second time.

putting in more than two hinges means that not only are you sure they are perfectly colinear - you are also sure that they will forever stay that way regardless of material expansion/shrinkage, general wear and shifts of the ground/anchors. the only reason your third hinge doesnt bind is that they are usually cheaply produced with large tolerances.

House doors usually have 3 hinges. It's about using minimal effective fasteners, not avoiding bad failure conditions.

Door technician here (man doors and garage doors mostly) we usually install a thing called continuous hinges on heavier doors because regular old hinges tend to sag down and bind the door up. Continuous hinges don’t tend to fail but what usually tends to fail is the motor or concrete filled door frames and they “fail” when they sag after years and years.

Depends on how far your hinges entend into the door. The ones on his door are pretty narrow for that size of door. Where the ones you show are wider therefore they have more leverage. The technically correct answer is to use 2 hinges appropriately sized. But styling and mounting space limitations requires some sacrifice .

I like three. Even if you've done the proper size hinges for the weights, kids try and swing on it, weather and time do their thing, it will sag. If you had a strong enough hing, you could do a single one in the middle, but you devide the work and everything becomes more stable and durable

You are 1000% correct. As the wood warps the ground shifts or kids clamber over it, the middle hinge will hold strong and force the others to pull lose. We use two hinges of 300+ pound cattle gates.

I like to put three, the top and bottom 1/10 the height of the door in from top and bottom and the third 2/10 from the top. This gives extra holding force so the door doesn’t sag as easy. And I find this to be most aesthetically pleasing.

I do finish carpentry which involves installing a LOT of doors. On our production sites we just switched to 3 hinges for each 6"8' door. We had too many customer service calls for the door bowing. We also started using 4 hinges on our 8'0" doors. They don't bind use more hinges for more weight.

More hinges balances the wear better. Using ball bearing hinges or at least regularly lubricating them with heavy grease will also help keep the knuckles from wearing prematurely. The heavier the door or gate, the more/heavier duty hinges or pivots you need

If you're going to install more than 2 then install 4. You can evenly space them or you put 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom together

I install glass showers everyday and we only ever use 3 hinges when 2 hinges can't hold the weight of the door. We can use standard size or larger ones which hole more weight but they have their limit and the 3rd hinge always binds and fights two hinges.

What’s the average weight of a picket gate? Most henges support around 100 lbs a pair, and I just don’t like that number with how much wood it takes to build one.

When installing cow gates we always did 2 lags into a post. Never seen em with 3 and I know that bottom one takes most of the weight. So im not sure if 3 is going to help. Then again idk, doors use 2 to 3 hinges and I assume there are benefits to the third. Prolly just distributes weight more.

You only need 3 if you’re doing a double drive with leafs bigger than 6 foot. Or use 3 if your doing a 7+foot tall gate

Imo, it depends on the hinges and the purpose of the door. Shrimpy hinges might need a third just in case someone ever leans on the door. If the door needs to be able to take impacts (i.e. a front door, or semi-secure gate), then more hinges can really increase sturdiness (of course, shrimpy latch then becomes the weak point, ymmv)

The hinges come in packs of 2 for a reason. You use 3 on one side, and 1 on the other for additional support. That way you never have to worry about the gate moving, which can bind up the hinges.

I'm a 3rd Generation fence man my dad was a fence man for over 50 years and I've never put more than two hinges on a gate unless it was an enormous chain link gate. If you want to put more than two hinges I would just install a full length hinge.

It has less chance of moving if you use 3. It if moves... then it isnt square. So cheap gate just use 2. Otherwise it's going to rub up against the trim and make it look stupid so that's situation where you got nice and tight fit then you need to use three and install them correctly

In my house every door has 3 hinges, they are almost 20 years old and they all hold up just fine with heavy use. Not the same as a gate, but the constant stress on them does go to show 3 hinges isn't a real problem and is likely more to do with improper strength hinges say a 50 pound rated hinge on a 60 pound swing gate

Well it depends on the weight of the gate/door. It also depends on the size of the hinges. Say you have a solid wooden door, you will want 3 hinges but you dont want 5 inch hinges. Probably 3 inch or 4 inch.

With 2 hinges you could probably twist the gate pretty easily. With 3 it seems it would be immensely difficult to twist the gate. If you have dogs jumping against it or whatever, the gate would be liable to twist or sag with just 2 I’d bet.

2 Hinges is all you need, but they forgot to do the reversed Z on the door for extra stability. 3 Hinges looks good though, don't think it hurts either.

Honestly? I prefer piano hinges (continuous hinges). But you only ever need two if your hinges are rated for the leaf.

It's funny, 2,3 or 9 hinges unimportant when there is no Z for stability in the Gate. I'm a Woodworker/Carpenter in Germany, you always have to make a diagonal from down the side with the Hinges to the opposite corner.

Notice that you can buy hardware that holds more then 1000 pounds. Just charge properly and get the right stuff. Menards hinges that hold 100 pounds are not the same as "heavy duty LL hinges"

I've always felt "we've done it this way for decades" usually had a reason behind it. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it's wrong. I always felt sag was the issue and a third middle hinge ain't helping that unless you skimped on hinges or screws.
