Having both, getting new valves and not needing seats, a piston, cam chain, and gaskets are about $500. I need to do that every 80-ish hours. On my 125, its $150 for a piston and gaskets every 15 hours. It all depends on how you ride them too. If your pinning it on a MX track they will both wear out quick. If youre putting on the trails they both will last a while.

No way. You mix gas and oil to the specs of the oil itself and not the bike. My CR 250 is supposed to run at 32 to 1 and I run it at 52 to 1. I have less problems and the bike runs better. Too much oil will just make your bike run like shit and foul the plug. To mix oil at 32 to 1 you have to get oil that mixes at that ratio. Not the oil I want to use.

I use Golden Spectro 12 ounce in 5 gallons. One spark plug last me five years. At 32 to 1 you will change plugs every other time you ride. I’ll take the word of a good mechanic that works on these bikes every day and knows what happens to them after five and 10 and 15 years riding over the manufactures word any day. 100 to 1 they want you to wreck that and buy a four stroke.

The two stroke will break more often but are cheaper to fix than a four stroke, so if you want something that doesn't need much maintenance buy a four stroke. If you want something that requires no maintenance, go with Hondas. No joke, I have a sportrax 90 that hasn't had the oil changed in over ten years and it still runs fine. 😂😂😂

@AndyTrampke
@AndyTrampke 7 жыл бұрын
Thats really not the best idea. Theyre limited in range they can open because when flexed further the metal theyre made from suffers from fatigue much quicker. Last thing you want is your 2 stroke inhaling a piece of reed valve.
@alasdair4161
@alasdair4161 7 жыл бұрын
Some engines with crankcase reed chamber need the flex limiter to prevent the reeds touching the crank at high rpm. It's all over real quick if that happens. They are there for a reason, the limiter is also shaped to force the reed to flex along its entire length evenly, that's why they are curved, without them in place, the reed will only flex at one point near the root, it will fatigue really fast and snap. Your piston will munch it all the way back to zero rpm..

@@WorksForMeBro Me too, I learned the hard way with my leaf blower. The piston ring got stuck to the piston, the cylinder got scored. I fixed it by a little clever sand paper work on the piston and bore. I ported it a little to restore the power. Todays fuel is 10% ethanol, running 32:1 is good, or even 25:1

Numero Uno is you need to learn how to read spark plug color and how to do plug runs, new plugs fitted, ride full throttle in all gears and cut engine ignition and pull clutch, roll to stop and pull plugs and check color, if you do that you wont get caught out with piston seizures. Re fuel once you premix fuel it goes off faster so don't use fuel that has sat for long periods, modern oils less so but it's a good practice to mix on the day if you are touring or racing or at least replace after its been stored over winter etc.. 2 strokes produce the most power right before they grenade a piston because the mixture also provides cooling, a correct mixture will provide some cooling of the cyl and piston at the expense of power, so as it goes into too lean territory power increases however its too lean to survive it for long, so if your 2 stroke starts to produce more power and you're thinking wow engines really bookin it today, well it might not be for too long so best you get that spark plug out and check the color regularly.

I lol'd when he said 2 strokes are a "little" easier to work on then a 4, they are not a little easier.....there a lot, I can literally replace a top end on my rm250 in about 1hr for about 100.00 using only a couple sockets and a couple wrenchs, jetting and maintaining a 2 stroke is not anywhere near as difficult as this guys makes it out to be

I think you should qualify something here. There are a lot of variations in the 4 stroke world. I can swap out the entire top end of my old 1cyl OHV 4 stroke air cooled motor in...an hour, with 2 wrenches, a flat head screw driver, and one socket. Heck, a brand new head with a gasket costs all of 70 bucks, Toss in a new jug, piston, and base gasket for another $90 if I really feel like going to town, then I only need 1 more tool to remove the wrist pin retainers. On the other end of the spectrum, my liquid cooled DOHC 4 valve would take the better part of a day. That said...I never have to do a "top end" rebuild. 47,000 miles on that OHV and it's still as fresh as mile 1.
@71druss
@71druss 7 жыл бұрын
OddBallPerformance He's not talking about old 4 strokes, There is no way you can rebuild the top end on a modern 4 stroke in a hour for 100.00. And I call BS on anyone getting 47000 miles out of a modern 4 stroke mx bike. And yes I did read that u said u where getting that out of a ohv bike and not a modern 4...Unless it's a xr, those bikes run forever with proper maintenance, I use to own a xr600, was a great bike. So your comparison with your old ohv is not anywhere close to being relatable. It's takin over 30 years of engineering and evolution, fuel injection, crazy high compression ratios on a engine that cost thousands to rebuild if u over rev it, of a modern 450 4 stroke to even come close to developing the power of a 500 2 stroke built in 1985
@OddBallPerformance
@OddBallPerformance 7 жыл бұрын
71 Druss, this was never an argument about power. Also, calling BS? hahaha. Ok. www.bigdogadventures.com/WR250R.htm Read that, and get a clue. That isn't the only one either. There are plenty of CRF250L's out there pushing well past 40K. A guy I ride with has a DRZ400 with almost 60k on it and has yet to need any major rebuild work. So tell me more how it's impossible? You are basing your information on your biased personal beliefs, which are wrong btw, instead of actual facts. Also, impossible to rebuild the top end? I never said rebuild. I said check the valves. My $100 figure was IF I, for whatever reason, HAD to rebuild the top end of my old OHV motor, it would cost very little, and is literally doable in an hour. 4 strokes don't need to be rebuilt every 3 minutes. Valve "jobs" in most services are literally checking the clearances. The process isn't that much different. Now, yes, at a certain point things may be out of spec, but as long as it was maintained, most modern 4 stroke engines can log quite a lot of miles before that possibility arrises, and then it simply depends on the motor and valvetrain as to how involved that is. If it has lash adjusters, that's it. Adust them and done. If it happens to be a shimmed cam on bucket - feeler gauge, use chart or do quick math, figure out new shim size, get said shim(s) at dealer, install. The shims are cheap, and I am assuming anybody having this debate is doing their own work, so there is no labor costs to consider.

I guess if you buy a bIke near a mountainess area, you may may need to check the jetting. living in Missouri, there is not much elevation change around hear so it is less likely to buy a bike that the jetting is way off.

At first I was scared of all the valves and reliability of a fourstroke. But at 80 hours my intake valves finally started wearing out. While it was apart, I checked the piston and cylinder. All still in brand new spec after almost 30 hours on the piston and 80 hours on the cylinder. the new valves and getting them shimmed was just under $300. Ill take about $500 every 80 hours to do valves and a piston every 40 hours to changing my damn 125's piston every 15 hours. Four strokes are not hard to work on the worst part for me is getting the timing right on the cams and getting the gas tank back on haha.

Of course, blame it on the bike...guys, if you put windshield liquid on the oilpan for sure 4 stroke will blown. One friend goes on Romaniacs, very hard on the bike (300cc 2 stroke) and change the piston when it doesnt have good compresion, over 200hr. So for sure is lot cheaper than a blown 4 stroke with broken timming chain, valves, etc. Both engine requires basis mechanical knowledge and meintanance to run properly. Also I own a 300cc 2 stroke, had in the past 4 stroke. All I miss is engine brake of 4 stroke but nothing else.

Well when the new 2018 2 Stroke KTM comes out. You dont need to worry about jetting or mixing gas. The jetting will adjust itself to the altitude. And when you put oil in your in bike you poor it into a separate container and it mixes it for you. :)

My experience (and lot of other I have heard) is that if your engine suddenly runs a lot better then normal it is running lean and what happens next is a melted piston... 4 stroke engines get a little cooling from the oil on the underside of piston, 2 strokes do not have that advantage and melt pistons a lot more easily when getting to lean as it get more of the cooling from the fuel.

The title should be more that you know nothing on 2 strokes. Your rules apply to 4 strokes as well! Bad fuel! Bad air filter! Jetting to altitude! It applies to every single combustion engine.Your knowledge of 2strokes is limited and your doing an ed video on them? Get facts, simple facts, to change rings and piston on a 2 vs. 4 is way way easier. Call a professional shop get a quote on a top end service for a 4 and 2 stroke 2005 yz 250 and 250f same make same year. There is a more involved labor process in a 4 than 2 that the shop has to charge for. So how can you say they are harder to work on? I can completely remove motor and split the case, have it back together in the bike running in about 3 hours on one sons yz85 and youngest kx65. My other sons crf150r is about a 5 hour job just on the motor itself. I have done the cranks in all of them.

If you do not know about the tm400 it was known as the widow maker because it would advance 30° timing out of nowhere and you'd be at for torque and full speed immediately in every gear. I disagree with ya man, 2 strokes are way more reliable, don't need half the knowledge to work on or maintain, and every bike I buy I check the carb the see what Jets they have and the needle clip position. I ride with a group of people, 2 and 4 strokes, and the 2 strokes are all still running. 2 Honda's need cranks(can't tell you how many Honda cranks I've done). And when your 4 stroke goes, get ready to take out a mortgage on your house. But everyone's got their preference. Good vid man.

two strokes a stupid easy to maintain if you know or learn a couple basic things, clean & oiled filter, Carb boot not torn, reeds in good working condition, good packing in the silencer/ no soot blocking the spark arrestor screen, correct jetting, oil in fuel, coolant in radiator, oil in gear box, adjust the air screw at different elevation and temps accordingly, I run 300 hours on my pistons and 150 hours on my rings ktm 300 xcw, It cost me generally $200 to do a top end rebuild opposed to double or triple that for a 4 stroke.

thats bs about 4 strokes runnin better i had to take my 450 to the shop because there was a hole in the air filter and it some how ruined my valve clearance which inevitably caused my engine to blow up, you get the same issues with both bikes the difference being when my 450 blew it cost me nearly a grand however if i wanted to have my 250 rebuilt i could do it in my shed for 100$ (not that i would use 100$ engine rebuild kit) but the point is still there 2strokes are just better they make you better at riding amd teach you so many amazing things about motorcycles a one you learn to ride 2stroke even a 125 you can ride any bike even a leader the power to weight will just always be superior

Basically what he is saying is that 4 stroke are more reliable and if you ride with proper care you can get many more hours on a engine than a 2 stroke. My kx85 has been through a lot and I've rebuilt it and it took maybe 2-3 hours but my klx110 was a pain to rebuilt setting the valves and the timing and making sure it was at top dead center and that took the entire day. I'm not a master mechanic but if you ride them like they're stolen neither will last long but ride with care and you'll get more life out of them

it's explained in so simple way. people who bash down something such as 4-stroke engines are obviously people who don't really respect the engineering behind them. everything has it's pros and cons. if you took a small effort to learn them , they really aren't so difficult. i know a lot of "bike enthusiasts that only know how to change the oil and never really took any effort to learn how to do shit them selves. i would be afraid to drive/ride something i know i can't take care of.

he got a point.i love 2 stroke and very fast engines but theyre sensitive.if your mixture fucked up or just a little dirt sucking into the cyl,the piston dies in a sec.look at guys with very fast machines.theyre fast as a mofo but after every race need to replace pistons.piston and oil eating machines :D and is not fun when u have a lc engine.waste a lot of time to refill the coolant plus check squish blabla.4 strokes are lazy like diesel engines but they not really fail so fast.but when they fail...

This guy is talking sense . And to run a racing engine at a competitive level, the top end needs stripping after every event. You would never buy a second hand race bike and take for granted it had been put together correctly. Personally I would strip the bike completely and start again. But that's just me . It costs a lot of money to get to a race meeting and doesn't make sense to take the chance that it won't break down through lack of maintenance.

I may be mistaken but most of your points are up to you the owner to run proper oil/gas ratio, to run a clean and whole air filter, to jet your carb correctly, etc.... I would say that if these things are off when you buy the bike, it points more to the seller's lack of proper maintenance and then buyer beware, not what you will do with the bike once you buy it.
