#5 - Not many people probably knows about this, but since AMD released FSR the community have already developed an FSR mod which give you basically free fps in your old laptop with old GPUs (like RTX 2000s/3000s, anything below isn't really preferred). I know this because few months ago I was searching for a new laptop (a replacement to my Legion 5 Pro 3060 that I bought 2 years ago) because games have been increasingly demanding, but thanks to this mod it basically extended the lifespan of my aging laptop for like another year or 2. FSR3.1 is also coming this year (integrated into some of the newer titles).

If you play AAA games like me you will start to notice that games are catching up with the laptop hardware recently especially my laptop's specs (eg. Horizon FW in my laptop can't consistently keep the fps on 60 average - w/o framegen but with DLSS). I fear that I won't be able to run Ghost of Tsushima aswell. If you play AA or Indie titles then true, you're good for atleast 2 - 5 years more.

I only play Halo Infinite which it is capable of running at medium settings and high enough frame rates. Game runs well. Heating well controlled. Gaming on a budget. It has only 6 GB VRAM so it cannot run modern heavy graphic titles at fancier high or ultra graphics settings. But still , considering that is a luxury as is gaming in itself, 3060 is alright and I believe need not to spend more, unless one is a professional and does competitive gaming. Medium graphics also look beautiful. If you only have to play games then better get a desktop than a gaming laptop, better performance at lower price.

I have a Legion 5 Pro with 5800H/3070 and I really want to upgrade but I can't find any new laptops that fit my needs since 4K laptops are pretty much not made at this point (I get that it doesn't make sense since a 4K screen is hard to drive on a laptop) Basically what I want is 16+ size screen and 4K+ screen with a refresh of at least 120Hz - it doesn't even need to have a dedicated video card or powerful CPU since it's mainly for media consumption.

Gaming Laptops have improved so they don't die out as they use to buy getting 'cooked'. But Gaming Laptops seem to have motherboard issues to this date. I still think though, that normal notebooks and thin and light laptops are the better choice for most people. Gaming Laptops have rather become very good, but they are clumsy machines and still niche. More a portable desktop. Now even laptops are old school and tablets and smartphones, and may be in future VR are going to be the dominant devices for the masses. Otherwise enthusiasts still build custom PCs.

Alright so I'll list the specs quickly, the first one has an AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS, it comes with 8gb ram upgradable to 32gb (DDR5 4800 MHz) and comes with a 512gb SSD upgradable to 2TB. It comes with an RYX 2050 (4gb) around 50W TGP. The 2nd one however which is a bit more expensive is the 2023 model which comes with an i5-13420H RTX 3050 6gb VRAM 75W TGP, aside from that it comes with DDR4 instead of DDR5 - everything else is pretty much the same. So is it worth spending 60-90 more dollars on it or would I be better off getting the 2050 AMD Ryzen 7535HS? I'll have to use this laptop for the next 4 years. @@JarrodsTech

I think I'll wait for rtx 5000 laptops. Since the 4050 is too weak, the 4060 price is far from 4050 and close to 4070, and the 4070 only has 8gb vram, all this while older 3070, 3070 ti, 3080 leftovers models are being sold cheap although with no framegen. Would rather wait for 5000 series for no compromises

In Europe RTX 3000 laptops are more expensive than RTX 4000 series. For 999 € we can have a I5 12450H + RTX 4060 8G HP Victus laptop. For a model with RTX 3060 add 300 more euros. But things gets worse as things are no more logical. Laptops with 3050 at 1400€, laptops with 4050 at 900€.. The shops are making this very confusing, nothing are correlated.

Why there is almost no 2024 gaming laptop with Intel Ultra 9 185H ? It should drain less power than 13th/14th H series with equivalent performance. For instance Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i has a full 100W 2175 Mhz 4070 in a thin chassis this year and performs very well. Same for Zephyrus G16. I am the only one who want a good gaming device with a bit of power efficiency and design in mind ?

Well, because intel cpus still suck in terms of battery life. If you wanted a laptop with good battery the only choice you have is ryzen since the core ultra cpus run horribly on lower wattage

You didn't mention the new Intel Ultra processors. I wanted an Alienware x16, Ultra9 but they have disappointing configuration limitations, as they do with the M16. Being as the M16 is soldered, and I can get 64GB of ram...I went with that. I had some lengthy shipping issues and I decided to have the order canceled (rerouted to Dell's US facility) for a full refund. I'm going to wait. I will only buy Alienware or Origin PC laptops so I'll wait until Alienware comes up with a decent screen brightness and less configuration limitations.

A friend of mine recently asked me "Hey. What kind of laptop should I upgrade to? My laptop has R7 3750H and GTX 1650, and I recently got back into gaming. I just hate meddling with the settings (and he wants to mostly max out stuff). I want something where I'll mostly NOT touch the settings apart from the High/Very High presets. I have like 2K EUR rn, but I can save more in a few more months". Immediately I was like "get a desktop" but he outright refused, he is a mobile person. Looking at the options, 4070 laptops look in his budget(ish) etc, but THAT 8GB VRAM, I JUST CAN'T RECOMMEND IT TO HIM ONLY TO BE A "BAD FRIEND" IN A YEAR OR TWO, WHEN HE'S F#$KED BY VRAM LIMITATIONS. 4080 (and above) laptops are WAY too expensive. If only 4070 had 12GB VRAM, I'd have easily recommended it to him. Wish Nvidia could do a bit of a "Super refresh" for laptops and bring more VRAM to midrange GPUSs, otherwise it'll be a LONG wait until the next gen laptop GPUs come out 🫠

One advice I can give you is to buy the laptop you want in one go and don't settle for less. Too many times I bought a cheaper laptop than the one I wanted, ended up selling it for a loss, and buying what I really wanted at the end.

Last gen models are getting phased out. Very limited options. But luckily Lenovo/Asus and Acer have provide some actually great value for money RTX 4050 and 4060 options. The efficiency of these 40 series models means they provide similar gaming performance to last gen Full powered 3060/70 laptops which were more expensive that these new 40 series laptops cost now! Lenovo LOQ 4050/4060, TUF F15 12700H 4060, Acer's Nitro V/16 4060 have actually brought tangible value for money increase as this level of performance was generally more expensive in 2022/2023. Yea but 4070 messes up the whole stack.

No this is just for gaming laptops and nothing else. If you really don't not care about spending a extra couple hundred dollars on laptop because you haven't gotten an new laptop in years. Get an 2024. If you want to save a couple hours dollars you can get 2023 laptop because their isn't much different in them. If you get an 2024 laptop look for ones with Intel Ultra CPU's. Intel renamed their CPU line with Ultra also with Ultra it comes with NPU Neural Processing Units which LLM can use for it's AI workloads there isn't really an use case for NPU yet but I'n the future their is. Please do not get an Intel 14 Gen CPU with Intel Ultra CPU's out they are an Waste of money.
