I went to your store and I was hoping to find some tanks since you were stressing the fact that they needed to be in certain kinds of tanks. The ones I've seen get low reviews or don't have the proper filter or a place for a heater and I'm very frustrated trying to find a proper tank. I just lost one of my betas that I really loved and it's really freaking me out because I have another beta and I don't want to lose him.

I remember when I was younger I had an amazing red female betta fish named Claire. She had a huge personality for a fish. She was also extremely smart. My seven year old self managed to teach her several tricks, and when I walked into the room she was in she always would get excited and jump above the water. She sadly passed away after 6 years of having her. After years without another fish I got another betta around 9 months ago. His name is Phil Ravioli Swift (haha) and he’s a blue male. Thank you!!!!! I've been taking care of bettas for 6 months now and my family doesn't understand why I'm "treating them like royalty." No matter how many times I explain it, they simply don't understand that the decorations I get for them, the filters I spend weeks choosing, the medicines I buy, even some toys (like the mirror one) are so that my babies can live and not just survive. "BuT tHeY'rE jUsT fIsH" yeah okay, but it's also a living creature that I have taken into my care. Not my fault that I can see these little fishies as my babies and love them like they were any other animal.

My family is the same. A month ago, I didnt really know anything about keeping fish. One day, my mom showed up with a 10 gallon tank with a filter and two goldfishes. She filled the tank with plain tap water and DUMPED them in. Tank wasnt cycled, she didnt acclimate them, and didnt dechlorinate the water. Its no surprise they died 5 days later. Whats funny is my mom blamed me for their death. When I started to point out all the things she did wrong, both of my parents said, “Forget about it! Im not spending anymore money on a fish. They dont need all that. Believe me. I kept a goldfish in a bowl before and it lasted months so stop wasting my time.” CANT YOU BELIEVE THAT 🙄 They gave me, a 15 year old, a fish tank and some fish, then told me that its my responsibility. You know what I did? I cycled my tank, spent over $100 of my own money for fish supplies, and bought a betta. My parents still yell at me for taking care of a living thing.

I wouldn't recommend keeping two chihuahuas in a 75 gallon like that. Both tend to stay towards the bottom of the tank and can be aggressively territorial during feeding time. Chihuahuas weren't meant to be kept together. I'm glad you did a species-only set up, but a chihuahua would be much happier without any other dogs to compete with. As a side note, a bare bottom tank is easier to maintain, but I find a dark substrate really brings out their color and gives more surface area for bacteria to break down their waste.

As a pet store manager I can definitely offer my input as to what goes on, and the misconceptions customers have. Yes bettas can definitely 'survive' in something small, and there are reasons as to why they can survive that way. But there is a difference between surviving and thriving. In a pet store, the way that animals are kept are for temporary selling purposes, and not because that's how they should be kept for the rest of their life. This is the big mistake customers make. I keep the fighters in our store in something smaller, generally 2-3 litres, but at home I keep them in about 20-25l. But when I explain this to customers they often say 'well you keep them in something small here'. Yes it's true, but pet stores also keep cats and dogs in a pen, and 50 goldfish in a 100L or less aquarium. We get paid to maintain these a lot more regularly than you would want to spend years doing at home for free, and these animals are there for a short amount of time, generally a few days to a week. I literally get my phone out and show them my tanks to prove that they can be in something bigger. The other issue, is that a lot of pet stores are required to sell small 2l 'betta tanks'. I have them, and I hate them. I literally tell customers 'look, I sell them because I have to, but these are the bigger options I have that would be more suitable'. Please do proper research before buying an animal, and don't presume that the way you see an animal displayed in a pet store is how they are required to be kept beyond the week they spend there.

@tecwzrd

@@DanishButterCookie you misunderstood his point. He works for a major retailer, and the company requires that he sells 2l tanks as part of his stock. As he mentioned he does point them in the right direction to buy a proper sized tank. I'm 50 and have have kept fish since I was 8 starting with a 10 gallon freshwater to a 150 gallon reef tank. My 14 year old has a Dumbo betta in a 10 gallon tank with only a few 2" Amano shrimp for company. That's as small as I would go personally for a betta with or without tank mates. Also I'd have a 20 gal long if you plan to have a Bristlenose Pleco, Clown Plecos, Kuhli loach, Cory catfish (6+ in a school) Neon Tetras (6+ in a school). Keep to the 1" per gallon "general" rule for freshwater if buying schools of fish. Make sure if buying a Pleco you're getting the smaller versions and have at least a 20 gal long tank. The larger ones get up to 18" while the Bristlenose Pleco & Clown Plecos stay closer to 3" max.

I agree with you. I bought a female betta and she was mostly a white colour with a bit of pink and blue, within a couple days her the pink and blue took over the body and she was so vibrant and happy, she was placed into a community tank that was 40 gallons, sadly all my fish froze earlier this year fro a furnace going out, but I had never seen such a great change from a store fish coming home. I doubt she would have changed to such a happy bright colour if I placed her into a tiny tank.

Hi! I work at a pet store and I want to let you know the reason we keep bettas in cups. I got my first fish when I was about 7 or 8, and I feel so bad for him! My mother told me she knew ALL about fish keeping. She put him in a tiny little bowl with a single plant, no filter, and fed him regular food instead of betta pellets specifically for bettas. Me, not knowing any better, just thought it was cool to have a fish. He died a few months later when my mother damaged his tail and he became unable to swim well. However, I spend more time with my father now, who actually DOES know how to take care of fish and has a 55 gallon tank with thriving fish at the house. He inspired me to try again at having a fish, so now I have another betta, who lives happily in a well maintained, 5 gallon tank. I do not regret anything I've done with my current betta and am so happy I can provide better lives for these fish. :)

My kid’s school had a fair two years ago and one of the booths gave away tiny goldfish as a prize. Needless to say my kids came home with 4 tiny goldfish. Fast forward 2yrs later and those 4 fish are still alive and are currently in a 36gal aquarium. Fun fact, our 4 fish are the only ones to survive longer than a month. All the other parents I know who took home fish said theirs died within the month (some within the week). It made me sad because I know most of those goldfish were tossed into a fish bowl. Goldfish aren’t my favorites to keep, but I refuse to condemn them to a miserable life. It’s not hard to do the right thing, do a little research, and have a quality setup that won’t break the bank. These 4 goldfish did jumpstart my interest in having a freshwater tropical tank. We are finally at the part where we can buy the fish and introduce them to our second 36gal tank. I also blame quarantine for my sudden interest in keeping fish. (And my son’s terrible allergies to all things furry)

In elementary school I had a teacher that brought a bunch of fish, frogs, and snails to show for classes. We had them for 2 or 3 weeks and then she didn't know what to do with them. She asked who wanted to take any home so I got some fish and snails. I realize now how irresponsible she was because A. She never though through what she would do after she taught us? And B. She never asked any of the kids parents if they had the means and equipment to take care of the creatures. Luckily I did Have several tank waiting to be housed with fish and a smaller one that i just kept the Beta and a few snails in. But the fact she used all these animals without thinking what she was going to do afterwards is a bit frightening

But here’s the thing- all these years later her mistakes are teaching exponentially more people what NOT to do, by your sharing this story, than she could have possibly achieved through the completion of her original lesson plan for the class. Not only that, but she (failed) to think the whole thing through- all of this had an incredible effect on a child, seemingly a lifetime ago most likely, and this knowledge has been passed down to, and for, the benefit of so many others! Super cool! Thanks for sharing!

I bought my Beta fish knew nothing about fish so I bought a male in a little cup . I bought a little 1 gallon bowl at wal.mart had no filter. I was told I would be lucky if he lived 3 to 6 months well he was doing so well. I upgraded him to a 2 gallon tank with a filter . It's been a year he is doing well . I am up grading him to a 3 gallon tank he does have 2 snails for tank mates. I also recently found out about the benefits of moss balls in the tank to help with nitrous I bought him 4 of those to help keep his tank cleaner and to help with oxygen I also bought him a heater this year . I am 51 enjoying my beta fish Since he is my first fish I am learning as I go . I am sure I have made some mistakes ,but I am.trying he seems happy he seems to adore us he swims to the side of the tank and when we kove to another side he will follow me even if I put food in he stilk.perfers to follows me around the tank to eat . Can’t thank you guys enough for all the info I’ve gotten from your videos. My 6 year old got a Betta fish last summer for his birthday from a relative. He was given to us in a small bowl with plants. After a few weeks i noticed he was loosing fin tissue and looked very lethargic. I never thought i would ever take care of a fish and therefore was very misinformed about them. After a few days of youtube and google i found out we were not providing the right care for this beautiful Betta. My kid and i went to the store and bought him a 5 gallon aquarium, heater, better filter, better food etc. i feel bad for those couple weeks of mistreating my fish 😢. But now he is my second child and i love him so much. He is happily swimming around and more beautiful than ever. Never thought how much happiness a little being can bring you

I guess one could equate it to the same thing is, is your fish any less alive than your cat or your dog? We give cats and dogs and four-legged creatures respect. Bettas and Goldfish are living, breathing creatures as well. But because they don’t throw or bark, or sit on your lap so many people are in different to their needs. Treated properly a treasured Betta, will interact with you, and can be a wonderful companion. And yes, if you have the time, you can teach them simple tricks. My beta, is in a 10 gallon planted to tank, Water changes weekly, special food treats twice a week, He requires little care other than weekly tank maintenance , and his favorite time of the day is when he sees me take the blue cap off the Bug Bites container.....lol, he actually recognizes the blue cap as feeding time now.

I wish I hadn't of been as young as I was and knew more, that way I wouldn't have kept it in the small bowl given to us and would have asked my mother for a filtered tank Q-Q I tried my hardest, fed it daily, changed it's water weekly, but it just wasn't enough in the end, the poor thing probably had a horrible life.

The best solution for feeding a betta blood worms from a frozen cube is to place the frozen cube on a piece of plastic wrap. Fold the plastic wrap so it covers the cube and smash it with a meat maillot. I then put the smashed bloodworms in a container with a lid and place it in the freezer. When I want to feed the fish, I can simply grab a little bit. I do this because I have little fish and smashing the cube breaks up the bloodworms to little pieces.

Excellent video, although I HATE all those dinky "aquariums" the stores surround betta fish with. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than 5.5g. My betta is in a 10g (black water) and is very happy. It's a fish, put it in a real tank like any other fish and do away with the tiny "tank" marketing crap. I had a guy at LFS criticize me for wanting to put a betta in a 10g. He said "you're gonna get a 10g tank for ONE fish?" He then proceeded to show me all those dinky so-called aquariums and told me that's all I need. This, in my opinion, is a big part of the problem.

Those filtered nano kits are definitely better than an unheated or filtered bowl, that being said those only one I would even consider buying is the fluval spec, seeing as it comes in a 5gal size. The minimum for a betta is five gallons, even then a ten is much more suitable. Bettas are curious, energetic, constantly exploring they’re environment, building nests, interacting with things, etc, If that’s not your experience with them, than you are doing something wrong, or the fish is old/sick. The misconception of them being lazy fish comes from how they’re treated. If their water isn’t warm enough, or if they’re in pain they will be VERY sluggish. And, long finned bettas are a bit slow because their finnage is so heavy, but their still veryyyy active. They don’t like dirty water, they like tannin rich water. They don’t like small spaces, they come from knee deep marshes that go for miles and miles. They often have constipation from overfeeding sure, but it’s also due to the fact that they thrive on a frozen/live food diet, as they are carnivores that need lots of protein and fiber. Back to sluggishness, It could also be that the filter flow is to high and pushes them around, or they feel much to exposed and would benefit from more plants. Basically, all the betta misconceptions come from a lack of understanding of their needs. ANYWAY rant over I just like bettas a lot haha Mine are very precious to me, I’m currently setting up a 24gal riparium for a wild betta, and a new ten gal!

Nothing smaller than 2.5 gallons. I asked them why corporate even stocks those smaller tanks? They said they don’t know but I have definitely seen them refuse to sell a Betta fish to someone trying to purchase a .5 gallon tank so I think we are moving in the right direction. I added ottos and a pair of corries last I added A pleco. Over 9 months. My goal was to add a betta. Something just wasn't right. The preset heater just wasn't cutting it. The tank was at 72 degrees. I knew a beta would be ok but not thrive. I wanted my rescue beta to thrive. My least heater gave out. I bought a new heater and while I was buying the heater noticed they had Betas on sale. So after the new heater stabilized I went to buy my Dream Betta. Keeping in mind the tetras might be fin nippers a "common" Betta would be a good choce. For $2.95 (there was 3 to choose from) I choose one that was lavender with pink fins. My husband asked why not all, why not buy the more expensive. I responded only one. This is the one. His food was3X what he cost. He is amazing! His colors responded!! He went from lavender to a blue body to red fins. He is so sassy.. He doesn't take anything from the other fish. He has so much personality.

my older sister wants to get my barely 2 year old nephew a betta because he likes looking at mine. i can tell you now that that fish wouldn't last a month in her household. she's so clueless and obviously my nephew doesn't understand how to take care of a fish either. i started to tell her that you can't just chuck a betta into a tiny bowl and call it a day. i began to explain cycling and temperature requirements and having to get a filter and heater and how often she would have to clean the tank and she was like "forget it!" i think i potentially saved some betta fish somewhere from a cruel fate

I once bought a Wal-Mart betta back when I was in college. All of its surrounding mates were dead. I some how convinced them to give it to me for half the price. I'm no aquarist, but I kept Chronos in a 3 gal and an air stone and he was the longest living fish I ever kept. Then when I graduated I brought him with me. Set a 10 gallon, cycled and within 2 months he passed. I was so sad, had him for about 2 years. So the video made me feel a little better when it mentioned life span. I eventually got another and named him Atlas. Chronos started a trend.

Lisa one time I went into a Petco where they had Betta in cups at the register and the cashiers told me the reason why they are in cups is because they are vicious fish that cannot be put in a tank with other fish or even another Betta so they have to be in the cups alone :( So I never bought one. I always hated that those fish were in those cups I thought there has to be something wrong about that. So happy that you are educating people about Betta because they are so beautiful and deserve to have a real fish life in a space they can thrive. How long can a Betta live in a covered cup in a rack display? Thank you ♥

We had a betta when I was growing up who lived for nearly 10 years, five of that in my mother's classroom, after I left for college, with no problems. He was vibrant and curious. He would have lived longer I think, but one of my mother's students put handsoap in the aquarium, and the shock was just too much for the poor fish. I currently have a copper betta who has almost a rose tail, who we've had just a few days who was a rescue from a pet store (he's got a positive buoyancy issue, and the pet store was getting ready to get rid of him because he was just floating. He's recovering well after the right treatment, and looks like he's going to make a full recovery!) I forgot how joyous a betta tank was to keep, and he's got a 5 gal cylindrical tank all to himself (I may introduce some ghost shrimp into the tank after he's made a full recovery, since I've had luck with them in the past pairing well with bettas)

Very informative. Betta are one of my favorite fish. I had a female sorority in a 45 gallon for 5 years. Loved it soooo much. I had cardinal tetras in with them. Sadly my last female betta pasted last year, she was almost 7 years old. The tank has evolved into an angel tank now, although my very old albino cory cats are still in there. My male betta was very happy in his 10 gallon with his black neon tetras. He passed at 5 years of age. Betta as with any fish, do your research before purchasing. This is a very good list to consider before purchasing. Well done.

I agreed with p much everything in this video. When it comes to tank mates and even tank sizes for betta fish everyone has VERY different beliefs. I personally feel the minimum size tank for a betta is 2.5 gallons, while I have a close friend who wouldn’t dare put a betta in less than 5 gallons of water, and in fact another friend who will preach a minimum 10 gallons for a betta. The aquarium hobby is based on your OWN individual experiences and that’s why we all have different standards. I kept a veiltail in a 2.5 gallon who lived for 12 years with weekly water changes, and another female veil tail in a 3.5 gallon who only lived for 3 years with the same weekly water changes. I’ve had many experiences. If you are a beginner don’t even bother with tank mates. Think of yourself as your betta’s mate, or get them a marimo moss ball as a mate. And to be honest, if you have the space, the bigger the tank the better! Because your tank needs to stay heated at 78-80°F the water will evaporate much faster in a smaller tank. If you are not gonna stay on top of that smaller tank on the daily, go for a bigger tank you can maintenance weekly, or a giant tank you can maintenance monthly. That’s why I say 2.5 gallons minimum WITH A LID is MY standard because I’ve been in the aquarium hobby since I was 16 years old and love doing daily aquarium work. The lid will help keep evaporated water from completely leaving, it’ll collect on the under-side of the lid and trickle back into the tank, plus these fish JUMP HIGH! A lid is a MUST.
@MadCheshireHat
@MadCheshireHat 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, personal experiences and especially the fish's personality varies and matters. I think 2.5g is fine for some people, provided they maintain it well and have all the necessaties, but not everyone will do so. Yes, they will jump! I remember as a kid, I once had a female betta in a net moving her to a tank, and she jumped out of the net, hit the ground, and was flopping around wildly while I tried to catch her.

Betta splendens still get a lot of benefit from tannins in blackwater though. I have a Petsmart rescued half-moon male in a blackwater 5 gallon Fluval Spec now, but when I rescued him, half his tail had been eaten up with fin rot and I took him home and all I had on hand was a 2.5 Aqueon Minibow. But I never intended that to be his permanent home and he spent not even 3 months in it before his new actual home was ready. He's already growing back his tail now that he is soaking in those tannins and he's only been in the Fluval for barely two weeks. He is one happy fish now.

This is a TOTALLY EXCELLENT presentation. I really REALLY appreciate your comments on the serious mistreatment of Bettas - and other fish - that is unfortunately so prevalent even in major fish markets - like where I live, in Bangkok, Thailand, which has one of the largest markets in the entire world. In fact I haven't gone to that market for many, many years, because seeing the way many fish species are kept gives me nightmares...Yes I'm a little batty - I don't even EAT fish! - but I would never, ever, even at the point of a pistol, put ANY fish into a small cup or use as a centerpiece. I keep my own fish - swordtails - in very large planted tanks with constant filtration and water changes - and when a tank gets crowded I move a portion of the fish into other large tanks. People walk, birds fly, and fish swim: and it is incumbent upon a fish keeper to give all his fish enough space to swim. KEEP UP YOUR GOOD WORK - I ADMIRE YOU ENORMOUSLY!! Thanks for posting.

The most expensive thing in my tank is the substrate and that's just because i wanted to do a planted tank. I think for everything I have for my tank (Tank itself, Filter with a venturi tube, heater, super bright light, plants, tubes for shrimp, thermostat and substrate) I have spent less than $50 and it's 2x the size of those crap nano tanks with horrible filters and lights.

Bettas are beautiful no denying that. But they are mistreated. A lot of people think that they can live happily in a 1 gallon or less "tank". I like using a 5 gallon tank for 1 betta. And a 10 gallon tank for a betta and a few other fish. ( not other bettas ) But you can go with a 2.5 gallon tank for 1 betta. Just getting this out of the way because people should know that small "tanks" or containers aren't good for bettas, and that the minimum for a betta is 2.5 gallons. More people need to know that. I believe that is the biggest unknown fact about bettas. And pet stores won't just tell you that. I know because I have had multiple bettas and when I did my research before I bought them was when I found that out. And not one pet store employee told me that. So I'm just trying to make sure more people know. Some people's comments have helped me. I hope this one helps more people.

Such as temperature recommendations. ie, Ideally between 76 - 81 degrees, or 75 - 81, or 78 - 80 (your guests recommendation). I know it's just a slight difference! I get anxious because I don't want to do anything to cause his demise or have an unpleasant life. Each of the sites are dedicated to betta care by the way. I like your videos, the information is helpful and informative. Do you have a go-to place you go for betta care when you don't know something? I will keep watching your videos. Thank you!

My fish lives in a 10 gallon tank. When I got him he was in a cup which in my opinion looks better than the tiny glass bowls my previous fish came in. He looks happy in his new home.

Reminds me of when my Mum said she remembers being able to go to the fayre, win or buy a goldfish and just keep it in a bowl until it died, no more than a MONTH later!!! Very sad how fish are mistreated. Keep up the message and spread the word of treating fish properly!

I would love to see a top ten list about methods for adjusting pH in your aquarium - either up or down. It would be really helpful for people like me who live in very hard water areas and struggle with this problem. Thanks! Love your videos!

I agree, I would like to see this too. We have hard water too and I am getting a Betta soon. The waters fine for my sons goldfish but I want to have fit right for the betta as they seem a bit more complicated than goldfish.

I just recently bought a sick betta (he got early signs of swim bladder disease but he's doing good now) and at the store I asked the woman at the register to put him and a few other things I bought behind the counter because I forgot to grab something, well when I came back because they didnt have the item i needed and I asked another woman if I could get my bag from behind the counter WITH the fish in it. She ended up just picking it up not knowing that there was the betta in it. The little man was left unharmed but we both freaked out wondering if he was alright. Needless to say I learned that you should always mention that you have a fish in a cup/bag when going to checkout so they dont get shaken up.

Just got a betta. Got in an argument with a lady at walmart about the tank I was buying. I had a 3g round tank with a 25g per hour filter. She was tryed to tell me I was wasting money on a tank that big. She then told me I should get a candle holder from the craft department for $1 instead. Then the was critisizing me for getting gravel. That I should get those half marble glass beads also $1. And that the aquasafe was a scan she owned a pet store and know all about fish. She insisted that the betta wouldn't be happy in more then 3 cups of water. I about cryed. i told her my family has had fish for all my life. That I got my first Betts when I was 6. 2 if my dads coworkers brought bettas to work to fight them. My dad stoped them and brought them home. One went in to the 250g tank the other came to my room in the 3g tank the guys bought to fight them in. 3g is as small as I will go for a betta. I just took the candle out of the holder I have it holds 2 cups of water with a quarter inch to spare with just water. That would be inhumane

I would've fought that lady right there. She obviously had no idea how to take care of a fish, and if she really had a pet store i feel bad for every animal in there

@@XX-nl9sx Same, sadly I've been in a few arguments over Betta fish care. The most common argument I've heard is that they live just fine in a small tank. Which they may but their not happy, which then people will argue that they don't have feelings...

When I was 23 I was going through a hard time, I'd been fired from a well paying job for reasons pertaining to a mental illness of mine. I was trying to medicate myself, and it was a mess. I'd mentioned wanting a betta, and so my mother had my cousin bring a surplus from a church summer program to me. I named him Kaiju because he had a big attitude, and he was blue, the color of the blood of Kaiju in Pacific Rim. He lived close to 5 years. I loved that little fish. First thing I did when I had money from babysitting was get him a 2 gallon tank with a filter, and high protein pellets. I wouldn't mind having another betta sometime soon, I kinda miss having a fish.
