This has Toyota listed. Toyota does not have Factory orders! Only allocation, which translates to you are not going to get what you want when allocated vehicles with options the dealer doesn’t control arrive at the dealership.

For added security I would include the following statement on the buyer's order: "[Dealership Name] agrees that vehicle shall not be sold to another buyer without the expressed written consent of [Customer Name]." I've heard stories of customers factory ordering vehicles and placing deposits on them, but when the vehicles arrived they were sold out from under the original buyer to a higher bidder.

Yes, no dealer will agree to that as you can string them along forever, never taking delivery but never allowing them to resell the vehicle when it comes in.

Disagree. I tried to "order" a 23' BRZ at my local dealer. It's an allocation system and it took them 4 months to get my allocation. After they allowed the vehicle to be damaged by hail, they refused to negotiate at all. They insulted me. They had their insurance repair the vehicle that they "own" through a floor plan and planned to sell it to someone else. I had to drive 3 hours away to get a different Subaru allocation.

@@tgoods44 That's that particular dealer, and it's great that they revealed themselves to be the jerks they are. Yes, they are alocated but they can place custom orders WHEN they have an allocation just as with any other vehicle that can be custom ordered. For example, if you try to order an Outback, you can, but the dealer has to have an allocation for one.

I can agree with you I just ordered a 2024 crosstrek for my wife and I got exactly what I wanted for $1000 under MSRP. It was a great experience. I can’t say the same for Acura though. I was going to trade my 2019 civic Si in for a integra type S but they wanted $10,000 in accessories and a mark up of $8,000 so I walked they would not move the price at all. It’s been 2 months and the car is still sitting there. I guess no one thinks it’s worth it.

I've ordered every new car (domestic) I've bought since 1986. One thing (I learned a few years back) is that during negotiations I always remind the salesperson that they need to take into account that my sold order allows them 100% of the holdbacks, and 0% interest on the dealers floor plan. Basically let's them know that I'm not some uneducated chump they can take advantage of when making the deal.

@@caydensinger6175 Every manufacturer has a "build & price" section on their web page. Just click on the link, pick the vehicle you want to build, get it done, print it off, and head to the dealer. Just take your time, and you'll get the hang of how it works. Keep in mind dealer lots are full, and you may not be able to negotiate a good deal on a special order. Dealers want to sell the vehicles on their lots so they can get them off of their "floor plan" debt. So you may be able to get a better deal if you can find something on the lot that is close to what you want. Good luck.

Reminded me of my first factory order. As a high school senior I ordered a 1973 Vega GT. Medium blue, no stripes, light saddle interior and automatic. Was about $3k but I traded in my 1970 340 Duster. Was very exciting waiting for it. Picked it up on my graduation day. Unfortunately, doubt many high school seniors today could afford to do this. The Vega looked good, but not a well built car. Traded it three years later on a 1976 Celica GT coupe. One of best cars I have owned. About a decade later ordered a 1985 Dodge Lancer ES 5 speed. Ordered from a family friend who owned the dealership. One of the worst cars ever owned. Throw out bearing went bad in a few months. Engine knocked constantly. Dealer said it must be a lemon, he suggested I paint it yellow. Traded it after six months on a 1984 Chevy Celebrity station wagon. Turned out to be a great car. Love your videos

Great video. I can't speak about other Japanese brands, but I've owned 3 Subarus and each was factory-ordered with the equipment/colors I wanted, one from Indiana and the other two from Japan. Each time I just configured my build on the website and sent it to the dealer, negotiated an OOD price, and then they ordered it. Emails were the documentation, but after watching this video I see that other manufacturers/dealers don't make the process so simple. I guess I have a really good dealer and must help that I have a history with them too.

I've talked to 8 dealerships, so far, on a Toyota Supra. I learned, back in my 20's, you must always have the mindset that you must walk away from car negotiations if things go sour. They will likely go bad. Now that I've walked away 8 times, I've accepted the fact that I won't get this car. It's a specialty car but prior to the pandemic, they were selling below MSRP. I will still look but my expectations are low. There is no way I'm going to pay 5,000-15,000.00 on mark-ups and pay the tax on the greed of these dealers. All the dealers tell me the same thing, it's in the market we're in now. Not true, some dealers do not add the mark ups but they work on a first come, first serve sales. When dealers tell me that it's just the market, I tell myself OK, there's the opposite side to that equation. I don't have to purchase the car for that price. It's the market we're in. It works both ways... sellers and buyers. The sooner the populace learns that, the better we're all going to be in.

Something to consider with ev insurance... The new design is a battery structure in the middle, a connected rear frame, and a connected front frame. So if the rear or front frame is damaged that can actually be replaced where with ice cars if any of the frame is damaged too badly, the entire car is totaled. Also the battery cells still have full value if the cell block is damaged as the cells can be repurposed to replace bad cells on other cars so the insurance company can easily sell the damaged battery blocks in mass. Also the fact ev's are 6400 times less likely to catch fire than ice cars. All of these things are good for insurance companies. I will concede though, because the BMW i3 has a supercar carbon fiber frame/chasis it is high to insure if you want full coverage from the 1 quote i got for full coverage. But thats not how evs are usually designed. Its more of a concept vehicle.

You can also order Italian brands, but most want you to have bought one off the floor first. At least that's what I was told in the 90's when I was actually shopping. Also, you can negotiate on a special order, but you usually lose any manufacturer rebates. If you listen to the ads on TV they guy speaking really fast at the end usually says, "must take delivery from dealer stock". Ray, if you negotiate that the rebates will be honored, does the dealer add it to their "stock" and then sell it to you? One more milestone the dealer should inform you of... When the VIN has been created. I believe that's the first milestone.

At that time for domestics, there weren't computers. You filled out an order sheet with everything that was supposed to be on that car. The top copy went to the manufacturer, and the second copy either went to the customer's file of the stock order file. Then you kept track by looking at the computer sheet the factory sent every week, and you can keep track of the order. Very few mistakes that way. A retail order at that time took 6 to 8 weeks,

I’m in the same boat. Every one will only sell at MSRP. If they are going to a non-negotiable price model, they need to get the inflated MSRP down and offer an extra discount to the factory order process to account for them not having to carry the money for a lot purchase. They seem to act like they don’t even want to sell. Greedy bastards.

I was able to go to our local Toyota dealer in Feb. 2023 and factory order a 2023 Toyota Sienna at MSRP just the way I wanted it. Color, AWD spare tire ect. I picked up the van a couple weeks ago. At the time of order I was told it would probable be until around Oct to Dec for delivery and they send me weekly emails and text messages letting me know they are still waiting and they have not forgotten about me. And then updates on the build and delivery dates ect. The only thing that happened was I only received one key and the second key will ship later. I did some research and found out Toyota has been doing this for awhile because of a chip shortage. I believe the keys won't be in till sometime in the first quarter of 2024. With the way I was treated at the dealership I have no worries that I will get it. Just not happy about only having one key. ( I did receive an extra key that is slid inside the key fob just not the fob.)

You got lucky. Toyota does not factory order. The dealership gets vehicles based on allocation and have no control over options, only hope or try to get a match from another dealership if possible and other dealer willing to send. I recently had this confirmed by Toyota at their headquarters in Plano. For many years I had a business relationship with Toyota.

@@Jim-s6i3b I went online at Toyota and was able to build the Sienna with the specs I wanted and get a price. I printed it out and brought it to the dealer who ate down with me and ordered it. They told me they do not do dealer mark ups at they do not work on commission. The van arrived just shy of the estimated delivery date. Yes you can do pre orders from Toyota. Maybe some dealers do not want to do it because they want the mark up price. They may have had to stop temporarily because they are waiting for the specs on the 2024 models.

I know they have this for many car dealers but I do the BUILD & PRICE setup, now is the price that is shown, is that the MSRP? The dealer is going to show you the WHOLESALE price/cost, correct, because that would give you information to negotiation. When you are going over the out the door price, is there a rule of thumb as to how much you should be looking at to buy the car, like a good price to purchase a car, would be like 10% below the MSRP, I would think that would vary depending on the car/price but is there a percentage you should try or expect?

As a salesperson. I wouldn't let them negotiate on the sale price if it's an order. My manager wouldn't let it go down anyway. They and I both know that if they waited approximately 3 months for their car and put a $500 deposit down then they're not going to walk away from it.

Odd that the manufacturer sites all have a "Build and Price" section that let's you build the car the way you want it. Virtually all the Asian brands have these features on their sites, so what is the point of that?

True. Toyota has their "Start you Reservation Now" on vehicles in build process which the dealer has in pending acquisition. It took us less than three months, which, in the scope of many other wait times, was somewhat reasonable. But, people are impulsive and emotional buyers and many customers want to drive a new car from the lot at purchase. So, they settle for other brands. Some with outrageous dealer mark-ups.

However this is not a factory order like Subaru does. Read above comment on how Toyota’s allocation system works. Toyota states in their policy you are not guaranteed to get the vehicle with the exact options that you requested.

Toyota policy is no factory orders with the exact options you want. It is based on allocation. You got lucky or they Were able to get an exact match from another dealer who was willing to transfer the vehicle that was a match. 8:59 I have recently had conversations with Toyota’s sales leadership at their Headquarters in Plano, Texas and they confirmed this. Only allocation system, dealer doesn’t control options on allocated vehicles.

Subaru does allow customers to order but this simply targets a vehicle in transit. The fact that Subaru options are quite limited means that an order can be fulfilled. If the car was heading to another dealer, do they take that car away before it hits that dealer? Yes. A customer order trumps a car coming for dealer stock. Been there, done that. I've also ordered a Chevy with a supplier discount and a Jeep.

In 2023, I should be able to go online and customize exactly the build I want. And not just packages. None of this, 'Oh you want a rear view mirror? Then you'll need our premium deluxe package with remote start and 360 cameras.' Unless a combination creates a physical issue with production, I should be able to pick every option I want and none that I dont. And then the car should be delivered to my driveway. Instead of dealerships there should just be regional showrooms where people can view and test drive vehicles.
