I bought a firman generator a few years back after losing $500 worth meat in my freezer. I hated spending $1,000 on something that would mostly live in my shed. Turns out we lost power about 6 times that year. The best $1,000 I ever spent.

Somewhat similar take on this end. My existing generator was giving me hell and power outages can last days or weeks after big hurricanes. So, I went to stores (that Google said were closed) and found the last one HD had in-stock, just before someone else walked up to it. I didn’t sweat the price because my thinking was that the price jump isn’t any worse than ALL the food we’d lose in the fridge and freezer PLUS keeping the family comfortable. No brainer. Now, I want to see what the details are on this “beast”.

I had to give up on Hondas due to ethanol fuel clogging carburetors. It's Dual or Tri -Fuel for me! Easier to store propane long term.
@davidnovakovich5583 Жыл бұрын
My approach is different: I go with the smallest generator that will meet my maximum basic need, anticipating that fuel may be hard to get, and smaller generators typically use less fuel. And they’re going to be quieter. Living in Alaska, I don’t want my pipes to freeze in the winter, so I need to power the circulating pump on the gas boiler. Put food outside, don’t need a fridge. Maybe power a couple of lights. In the summer, I don’t need heat or lights, but do need the fridge. Propane keeps indefinitely, so better than gas, and doesn’t clog up the carburetor, but is less efficient. Easily stored. I agree, don’t use gas in it, except for initial testing, then run it dry, drain the carb bowl, and later run your periodic tests with propane after that. Having a generator can be very useful, but keeping it it’s box until you need it on a cold, dark, windy, wet night without any break-in period or familiarity, or test runs, and without knowing more or less specifically what you really want to accomplish, and not having all the infrastructure in place, may make for a less than desired experience. Having the natural gas option with the tri-fuel setup is ideal. Have a plumber run a gas line for you, using quick disconnects. In all of our power outages over the years, the gas has never been out, so in theory we have an endless supply of fuel. But there’s no guaranty of that, so have plenty of fuel (propane is my suggestion) stored away. And however much you have stored, when the time comes that you need it, you’ll probably wish you had more. And for a long term outage, my fuel will be reserved for cooking and purifying water, not running a generator to power the house, if need be.
@BryanTorok Жыл бұрын
I like your philosophy on back up power. If we have lots of rain, I need to power my sump pump to keep the basement from filling up with water. But, I plan to install a battery operated backup pump. That way I can run the generator periodically to recharge the battery. I can rum the genny as needed for heating or cooling and for the fridge. Batteries will do for lighting and again charge those when running the genny for some other reason. This is not as convenient as the automatic whole house systems, but much cheaper to buy and operate, and makes the fuel last longer.
@InspiredCraftsman Жыл бұрын
I'm of the same philosophy. I have a small diesel generator sized to carry just critical loads. I also have sensitive electronics and fridges on small ups units. Keeps them running through the change over to the generator and cleans up any voltage or frequency fluctuations from the generator.
@jmackinjersey1 Жыл бұрын
As someone that has tried the "little as possible" method, I'll tell you that that is a fools errand approach. You'll make your generator run harder, longer. I've grown up and lived on the Gulf coast, where hurricanes and major storms come through quite often, which means zero electricity for days and weeks, or even months. Get one that will power your entire house, and then add 10%, something like a 13000. When your smaller generator is running full force, it is drinking as much gas as it possibly can. However, if you are able to hit the low idle switch and the house is still electrified, then your generator is much more efficient, and not sucking as much gas as it is WOT. Also, instead of buying the smaller, refillable bottles that you hook up to the grill, you can always get larger tanks and have the truck swing by and fill it. The fuel in those will last a long time.
@InspiredCraftsman Жыл бұрын
@jmackinjersey1 are you referring to natural gas/propane or diesel gensets? The diesel units last longer when worked hard. Too much idle time or light loads can cause excessive engine wear. If your needs are 4-7,000 watts, then run a 7,000 watt genset. Why run a 14,000 watt unit? The smaller generator is also a lot more fuel efficient. Without rationing running 5,000 watt load, the kubota gl7000 will burn about 10-12 gallons a day. The gl14000 will burn 15-17 gallons carrying the same load. A 250 gallon fuel tank will get you 2 weeks of power using the gl14000 and over 3 weeks with the gl7000.
@davidnovakovich5583 Жыл бұрын
@@jmackinjersey1 I think you missed my point. I'm not trying to power as much as possible with as small of generator as I can, I'm only powering the basics so as to eke out my fuel supply as long as possible.

@@TheScottmittel Doesn't matter! The AC Unit alone should use more than 12000W for startup even with a softstart on it you are looking at 8000-9000W for startup. That well pump depending on how big, will need a couple 1000 watts to run. Best case scenario, to run what he is talking about should be more in 13,000-15,000 watt range. And yes, the probability of the AC, Fridge, Well Pump and a few lights and TV running at the same time is pretty high. Look at the way the electricians calculate the service entrance size to a house. Some circuits can be derated so that a 200 amp service may have more than 200 amps of circuit brakers, but some things cannot be derated like AC, range, water heater, pump motors. That generator is twice as loud as a Honda 7500. At night, I have all my sensor lights only on the sensor, not light, so nobody knows how you knew they were even near your property. I put black tape in front of any red lights on my cameras. Totally black as midnight but totally night vision capabilities. Purchase some ThunderBore Blank rounds, and if a wolf comes prowling on your property, let one of those off with hearing protection folks, then you have your 00 Buck! These types of videos should come with a disclosure statement. Most people hear the words whole house backup, that is not a 100% true. You were running 4500 watts with the water pump on if you would have kicked In the water heater, you would have tripped the gen breaker. If you would have turned on your stove it would have tripped the gen. Breaker. Even running the microwave at the same time as the ac unit could trip the gen breaker. A 9kw gen running watts is only 37.5 amps at 240v. Most 3ton AC units pull about 24 amps or 6000 watts and the surge amps can be 6 times that. Not trying to down play your video or push people against buying a portable gen, these are great units for a temporary situation. Just know they have there limitations and that you can't back up everything on your 200 amp panel with a 50 amp generator.

I mean, saying the 50amp outlet is only 30 amps unless parallel is just wrong. It's 50 amps in 120v, which is likely to be the most common way it's ran.

Price? I am wondering why you opted for a less powerful/lower output generator than you previously had?
@aday1637 Жыл бұрын
You might want to find a straight in type plug as the one you are using is being pulled out of the socket due to the recess on the the genset. There seems to be a bar of metal right there. Are you also powering an electric hot water heater at 4500 watts?
@HaxmanXTRA Жыл бұрын
I have a gas water heater
@howardradford1985 Жыл бұрын
How big is your electric water heater that it pulls 4500 watts. I have a larger size but relatively new water heater which only requires 2400 watts. Maybe it's new so it's more energy efficient than a older model but I don't think my older ones pulled 4500 watts.

A generator is something you Never need, until you Need it! Make sure you do not store gas in generator tank. Store it in good gas cans and add Fuel Stabilizer. I have a DuraMax12K, Dual fuel and I added NG to it with ease! Exercise it every two weeks for 5 minutes! Keeps oil and seals lubed!

I'm Obsessed about the idea of converting the current Ford Explorer police inceptor, into a 'series hybrid' full electric drive, powered by a drop in and out generator like this. lol. People are actually doing this now, EdisonMotors is using a diesel engnie to power a full electric drive truck, very little battery needed as its not the main source of mileage.
@brentschuler27953 ай бұрын
Get a diesel generator save your money a diesel will operate on a 1/4 to 1/8th of the fuel a typical 10,000 watt generator will run on a gallon of diesel for about 7 hours and gasoline generator will consume close to 5 gallons

Did you misspeak or do you actually have to run 2 generators to get 50 amps? I thought each positive prong on the plug gives 30 amps but since you use both prongs on the 50 amp breaker you get 50 amps.
@bertveldhuizen8699 Жыл бұрын
To get 50 Amps you need a 12,000 Watt generator. 50 Amps x 240 Volts = 12,000 Watts
@howardradford1985 Жыл бұрын
@@bertveldhuizen8699 You know, I should have known that. I forgot it was only a 10500 watt even on gasoline. To get 50 amps the volts would have to drop to about 200V or less since he is running on natural gas

When the power is out, so is the power at gas and propane locations, at least in my area. One of the ratings that would be most helpful in choosing a generator/invertor would be fuel usage in pints per hour at 80% or 90% load. Why do they give us usage at 50% load while we are trying to size the gen to our usage? Manufacturers list 50% load but do not tell us at what throttle percentage the unit is operating at. Fuel usage is not proportional to load.

Bingo, during Beryl in Houston, I had stored up 3 x 5 gallon cans and filled my F150 with 20 gallons thinking that should be plenty for the anticipated 2-3 days of power outage. Thanks to the wonderful work of Centerpoint Energy and discovering my F150 has an anti-siphon device in the filler tube, I found my 15 gallons only lasted about 2.5 days of the week long outage. We had to drive quite a ways west of Houston to find gasoline. I now have 8 x 5 gallon cans and am thinking of buying a 100 gallon drop tank that can be filled during predicted storms. I would think propane would be even harder to find during an outage. So unless you are prepared to spend another couple of grand to put a 500 gallon propane tank in your yard, and then $1500+ to fill it, gas still offers a more convenient and efficient option, IMO. Dollar for dollar propane is much more expensive to run. The energy density of gasoline is very hard to beat. I have an all electric house with no natural gas available so that compounds things also. Electric range, Electric Hot Water Heater, A/C, Electric Heat, Electric Clothes dryer all adds up pretty quickly. One needs to be strategic when deciding what breakers to turn on when. It is more practical, IMO, to think it terms of portable heaters, and window AC units.
@brianhope58536 ай бұрын
@@tommaxwell429 Sorry that you had to find this out "the hard way". But, hey, there's no such thing as a free education. I actually chose to use a small portable 4300 watt LP generator that puts out 120 volts only. It uses only one (1) pint of LP per hour @ 80% load. This little generator gives me 30 amps of 120 volts that I spread across both 120 poles of the breaker box. I do have to turn off all 240 volt breakers for this to work. I live in a very rural area, so I already have a 1000 gallon LP gas tank which stays at 50% or better at all times. And I have a LP gas water heater and a LP gas range. So, the only things that do not work in a power outage is the clothes dryer and the AC/Heat Pump. I also have a 95% eff. LP gas furnace as part of a dual fuel HVAC system that WILL work on the 120 volt feed. Most of the time when the power is out, and the generator is running you cannot tell any real difference. Plus, the fuel lasts FOREVER, lol.
@tommaxwell4296 ай бұрын
@@brianhope5853 Nah, not the hard way. Just a natural progression of understanding and experience. I've had a 9000 watt generator since Hurricane Ike back in 2008. There is no good answer for all electric homes. Running lights and a TV are nothing! Heck a flashlight can give us light and a weather radio can keep us updated. The challenge is convenience and comfort and that takes heat, hot water, AC, maybe a clothes washer and dryer, dishwasher, range, toaster, can opener, garbage disposal. Those are big budget items. There is no good answer. So it becomes a choice of big $$$ full home solutions or picking and choosing. I can't justify a $20K whole home commercial solution. I can handle the inconvenience for a few days to a week. I just need to stock up on more gas ahead of time.
@brianhope58536 ай бұрын
@@tommaxwell429 Well, an all-electric home in the climate you live would be a challenge for sure. I'm lucky enough to live in WV and even the summers are tolerable enough. It's the winters that are the real challenge. I use a TRC AECM20020-3-012 plugged into an outlet that beeps if someone turns on one too many things and forces a voltage drop below tolerances. We lived for a month on a generator in 2011. 2 weeks from a derecho in July and 2 weeks from a blizzard on Halloween the same year. Fuel availability was a real problem for most. But with our setup the only challenge was the oil changes, lol.
