Don't buy a New Battery for your Sony A6700 until you watch this

The Sony A6700 does not come with a battery charger. You have to use the USB-c Port to charge the battery. Unless you do what I did and purchased a Smallrig Battery Charger with 2 Batteries and a PowerDelivery Wall Wart.

UPDATE: A few days after posting this video while using the SMALLRIG Battery something was not acting right. I could not play back a video that I had just shot. Error Messages came up on the camera. Then When I tried to playback some photos I took also the camera gave me a Card Reading Error. I went and got my REAL Sony battery that came with camera and all was fine after that. The Smallrig Battery was at about 42% charge so I am not sure if it had something to do with low voltage or what. I will not be putting these batteries back in my camera. I will keep the Charger tho and use it.

That extra USB-C opening in the charger is to plug it into a power supply with a longer cable if you need it. Great info on the “off brand” batteries. Most of us (me included) don’t realize that when we buy them!

The capacity of the Smallrig batteries in this kit are just slightly lower than the factory battery. It was really a nice kit for $53. I realized after I made the video that the USB-C port was exactly what you mentioned ha ha.

Hi Ron. I’ve been enjoying your videos lately. I recently pulled a video offline about an aftermarket battery charger and batteries, so I wasn’t leading anyone down the wrong path. My batteries were the same capacity as the real deal, and worked perfectly. Everything was fine until I updated my camera’s firmware (FX30). As they’ve done to batteries in the past, Sony disabled the aftermarket batteries by adding a warning and killing the battery indicator. My guess is that anyone updating the firmware in their a6700 will run into the same issue with the SmallRig batteries. I ended up going back to my genuine batteries and buying a third. Of course the charger works fine.

Greetings Marko, Thanks for the info. I had a similiar experience on my Nikon Z6ii with an after market battery. It seems the manufacturers want to force you into buying their products and not third party and they have found a way to do this. I will consider pulling my video also. Thanks again. I like that those batteries come with protective covers. I was surprised when I opened my ⍺6700 and the battery didn't have one. I also bought an extra genuine Z battery and it didn't come with one either! I think the TSA folks prefer that you have those on there. I guess I'll put some tape over the electrical connections of my spare battery if I ever fly with it.

Don't charge the small rig batteries in the camera unless you are desperate, use the small rig charger. All the manufacturers chargers I have tried have undercharged 3rd party batteries to make them appear insubstantial. I experimented with 4 different makers and without exception after the official chargers had declared charging to be finished I shifted them to the chargers that came with the independent batteries and charging started again and one went on for another 70 minutes. The best indicator of a battery capacity is it's weight, which shows how much chargeable matter is used in it's construction, this includes throw away batteries.

Same problem with phones. Apple started, blame them. I charge my a6700 while working on my computer through the USB C connector.

Neewer does a battery charger + 3 batteries for £82.99, the charger charges all three in one go. They are also 2280Mah.

Hmmm, smallrig does some good things but their batteries are not among them, IMHO. Folks like their charger though. I opt for oem on expensive electronics. I just paid 3x for 1 battery and a charger from sony. Nice tip on the wart.

The last camera I purchased didn’t come with a charger. I guess if it has in body charging you don’t get a charger anymore.

Branded by small rig. Not made by them. I have similar chargers for Sony and Fuji with a Chinese brand on it. Sony hates making or giving battery chargers

Don't we all have a drawer full of chargers from cellphones? I bought a real Sony battery with the official Sony charger. Good enough as those batteries last and last. On the road, good idea to buy one of those cellphone size battery banks. Good for charging phones and camera batteries, or anything that has a usb-c connector.

Those small rig battery’s made my Sony a7iv glitch when shooting video. Threw them in the trash bought 3 oem sony batteries problem solved. 😊

@@rdphoto2 hmm I think it’s just the small rig batteries that came out defective also third party batteries, I’ve tried other third party batteries in the past and they all do similar things like if I am at 30% battery then I take a photo and now I am at 17% overall i recommend Sonys oem batteries it makes the camera work to its full potential from 1% to 100% I like to charge my batteries when they hit 20% I also kept the small rig dual charger it dose the job no issues. I am going to buy a a6700 soon such an awesome little camera! 😁

This helped me a ton because I had the same problem with my brand new $2000 Sony camera and charging its battery. Literally one of the ONLY KZbin videos that helped, so yeah it's kind of important.
