Here are my reasons: 1. Size. I go on lots of long hikes, I walk with 3 dogs, and the heavier the camera around my neck, the more annoying it is. It may not seem like much, but 500g vs 650g is about 30% more. If I combine it with a nice prime, I can get it less than 1kg. Great for holiday travel too. Takes less space and weight in the pocket, bag, etc. If im walking to the top of a mountain for a fantastic photo on holiday, i'd want this camera 2. The flip screen is handy for recording videos with myself in. 3. Real-time eye detection in video is very handy 4. No record time limit 5. Its more modest size will garner less attention, be less intimidating, and look less expensive. Particularly useful on holiday or in places where a professional photographer might get more attention than you'd like. Yes, its not a hardcore market-breaking camera, but I don't think its designed to be. Rather, a camera to tap the market of people who are buying smaller cameras like the A6000 series with a full frame option. Not everyone values raw power, and may be happy with a convenient lightweight camera that does still take good quality photos and videos. Brand new, they are basically the same price, so if given an option of the two, people might want the smaller travelsized version As well, from Sony's perspective, its a niche market with little competition. Good, yet small full-framed cameras.

Because its simple, it isn't for photographers and I don't see many people saying that it is. For someone who wants to get into Sony full frame, flip screen works perfect for my talking heads and top down shots, better port doors, I don't have to take it off the tripod to access the SD card, improved AF. Its literally the perfect camera for someone who does KZbin like myself hence why I have it. Upgraded from the a6600 and no regrets. 1000% not for photographers but its not a bad camera.

I actually agree with you. For your described use case, the A7C is a very good choice. Even though I am not in a rush for the A7C, I am strongly thinking about it. I have the A7SIII... the A7C would be an excellent B cam for the A7SIII due to the improved video features and having double the megapixel-count wouldn't hurt for stills. I also like the size/weight of this camera and would be good for street and travel photography.

Some reasons why I would buy the A7C, even though I completely agree that it sucks ass from an ergonomics and pricing pov. Trust me I really really think it's stupid. If the A7C was at $1500 or lower, fine. But re-using nearly every single part? Doesn't sit well with me. Still... 1) New autofocus. The touch to track would make things a lot easier, I can tap on my model(s) and just fire off. I don't have much experience with the A7iii (I'm using my company's A7Sii - which obviously sucks more than my entry level $600 Canon in photos). But when I rented the A7iii I was either on wide mode, and let the camera play whack-a-mole in deciding who to focus on, or single point and using it like a DSLR. Focus - recompose, which shouldn't ever happen in a mirrorless body. Focus - recompose works for normal portraits, but I have to shoot workout in gyms, so unless I can move at light speed, it doesn't work for me. 2) Flippidy screen. I'm a hybrid shooter, I like having a flippy screen, and it's the ultimate best solution. Finally after so long Sony listened. Often times at work I'm lying down on the floor like I'm trying to upskirt people at a gym just to get low angle portrait shots. With flippy screens, I just rotate and shoot. Also protects screen in transport. I'm still salty as hell about the useless untouchable screen though. It's like using a camera with 2020 tech built in a 2005 body. 3) Improved buffer. I shoot a lot of action, so it's spray and pray most of the time. When I rented the A7iii I had to wait for the card to write. That was too annoying. 4) Gyro data. Useless for photographers, a godsend for videographers. I can finally do handheld shooting without worrying as much because Sony IBIS is useless in video. 5) There's no other alternative for my needs now as a hybrid shooter. Canons are portable induction stoves, Nikon can't even give sharp external ProRes video. I was considering getting the Panasonic S1 or S5, but apparently its autofocus is soooooo bad even native Sigma L-mount lenses don't perform well. Sigma is clearly part of the E-mount alliance. L-mount alliance is a complete joke, just like Panasonic's autofocus. I really really want the S1/S5 though. The video features blow Sony out of the water (not counting the A7Siii and cine line) 6) Not sure how I feel about buying the A7iii now. I don't want Sony to low blow me with the A7iv suddenly next year and I'll feel like I wasted my money. I could buy a used A7iii, but I can't. I'm broke, and still new to the videography industry. I have to buy everything brand new and use installment plans.

Professional start using the a7c in photography/video because they said it is impressive and half the price of a7siii for video and really stunning photo. Look at Areesz Gandhi Studio. The guy is a fashion photogrqpher, and you will see his photos are stunning. He has no probablem with the ergonomy, he preferw the flip screen anyway to shoot. No need for the bigger viewfinder. I tested myself the viewfinderr, and despite its smaller it was very clear picture. It is more difficult with glasses. But i could see very clearly without my glasses. The a7c is really superior to a7iii, don’t buy an old 3 years old camera. Autofocus is really inherited from a7siii in the a7c and is very important to shoot photo and video, the transition speed settings, the color science, the gyro data. The only thing i notice is the autofocus eye tracking does not work at high framerate 100, 120fps. It is working at 24/25/30/60 fps. The a7c has one of the best quality picture in the market. I downloaded from digital resource imaging the raw files from nikon canon and other sony camera like the a7siii and the a7c beat canon r6, nikon z6ii, sony a7siii. A7c has finest texture even at 51200 iso, the other camera does not have the same details and have more noise. www.imaging-resource.com/

@@professionalpotato4764 but consider the rumors for sony a7iv that could make it inferior to a7c : the bigger sensor 30mp by experience will have worse performance in low light. In one year of development they cannot resolve that or the a7siii wouldd have a 24 mp... it don’t because it is not possible. So a7iv will be inferior to a7c, it won’t be as portable. Also the 10 bit 4.2.2 if the a7iv rumors are true required more computer processing. So the real advantage would be 4k60, and active stabilization (again from rumors) but a7c With a gimbal will be better than a7iv without a gimbal. And because a7c is more lightweight it don’t required expensive pro gimbal. I don’t think a7iv will beat a7c in photos and video quality if thhey go to 30 mp sensor.
@professionalpotato47644 жыл бұрын
@@CC-gt3ro It won't be a huge difference in low light performance. You're overestimating the impact of just a 6mp increase in resolution. And if you're shooting over 12,800 ISO, you should be using lights, especially for client work. The Siii does not need 24 MP, because reliability for video professionals is far more important than just pure sharpness. Improving readout speed, low light performance, and heat issues is worth more than just sharpness. We saw how much of a failure the R5 and R6 is. And you're comparing apples and oranges. 12MP to 24MP is 2x the pixel pitch. 24MP to 30MP is only 1.25x the pixel pitch. Usability is far more important than portability. I won't use full frame for holidays and travel unless I'm rich enough. The lack of custom buttons make the A7C not as good as any other A7 bodies for photography. Using the EVF is also better for composition than the screen. At least in my experience. It's easier to nail composition with EVF. Gyro stabilization has it's limits. You need a powerful computer to render it, and there are limitations. If you have like only 1 client a month, maybe it's doable, but if you have a constant stream of work, unless you invest in a $5000 rendering pc, it's not suitable for most people. A $400 gimbal does the same job, at a lower price, and faster time. As people always say, get it right in camera, not in post-production. 10 bit 422 doesn't even make a difference in editing performance. It's the All-i vs LongGop compression that does. The current 8 bit 420 is still horrible to edit with. Have you compared All-i vs LongGOP yourself? It's quite a game changer. That said, I use proxies, so it doesn't matter. However if I have to render proxies, after gyro stab, I probably need Apple to release like a quad M1 chip computer to do it fast enough for work.

you asked for 5 reasons to buy the A7C over the A73: 1. real time tracking autofocus - I'd argue for any sport/event photographer that feature could be worth it alone, it is so much better and makes my a6600 a lot easier and more fun to use than my a73. 2. the smaller form factor. 3. the fully articulating screen - not my preference but would be for many. 4. unlimited record time in video. 5. the rangefinder style of the body. All very legitimate points that could sway someone towards an A7C over the A73 depending on their needs/wants. I'm considering picking one up as a second full frame camera that I can also use for my "fun" photography like sports and landscape, that I just don't really enjoy using the A73 for. I can only think of a few of reasons I'd favour the A73: better EVF, two card slots, more custom buttons and a front dial...after that I'm really struggling for reasons to go the A73 over the C - price is equal in the UK right now for both. So for me it really depends on what features someone wants and deems more important - both very capable cameras.

Here is why a portrait photographer would choose the a7c over the a73 ... 1) when shooting fashion its super helpful to shoot at waist level- this is the only Sony FF higher than 12mp stills that has a flip screen making this possible. 2) The AF s much better in images and video- when you shoot mostly humans you dont need extra buttons or a joystick to shoot with a7c- just set to AF Tracking and wide ... when it can see an eye or a face it will track that- when it cant it will track everything else. 3) lack of dual card slot isnt crucial- unlike the a73- this camera supports wireless tether. in the studio just have it tether to your computer and no issues. 4) for video- no recording limits, better color, and better af. 5) portability options- pair this camera with stellar compact primes like a 55 zeiss or 24 1.4 g master. Bottom line- for lots of portrait pro like me- a7c is the best option Sony makes. I have an a7r4 and it sits in my kit alot these days. PS: BTW- 1/4000 of a second is not a big deal- just buy a nd filter. 1/8000 of a second is one stop difference. Not major- a simple ND4 will cover you.
@joseluisphotoReal4 жыл бұрын
BTW- if you are shooting flash or strobe outside without an ND filter in the first place- I think you arent getting the best performance out or your strobes forcing them to always be in HSS. Just buy a quality ND filter its no big. The bigger issue is that its flash sync is 1/160 not 1/250 .. DONT shoot HSS with strobes outside unless you plan on taking less than like 40 frames before your lights over heat. Anyway- get a ND filter- and these are all non issues and you will get better performance from your strobes

Seems for under 2k, there are too many compromises for hybrid shooters. 4k 60 is likely to come in the a7iv with a 2500 price tag which will stop people buying it, same reason no one bought the r6. And the a7iv will likely not have a fully articulating screen so it won't appeal to hybrid shooters. So the a7iv will be just an expensive a7iii which as a photographer, you will probably just stick with the a7iii. Very frustrating.

Anyone that shoots some video, should pay some attention to the a7C. I'd hope anyone who wants to shoot wide open on a sunny day would have NDs (on the topic of shutter speed).

preach it. As a photographer, I found some of the omissions of this camera perplexing.. No way to disable the electronic front curtain shutter? 1/160 sync speed? 1/4000 max shutter? No custom buttons? No aperture ring? Firm nope..
@Chris-ey7zy3 жыл бұрын
Aperture ring is based on lenses. Look at new aperture lenses by Sony. 1/160 isn’t bad. If it was pro it could be 1/500 but it’s not a 5k camera. It has less custom buttons. Some lenses add another one

I can find 5 differences quite easily... 1. A7C has Eye AF in video mode and updated AF algorithm ... 2. A7C has unlimited video recording... 3. A7C has gyro data... 4. A7C has Multi-Interface hot shoe... 5. A7C has flip screen... ... but yes. I do agree the price is a bit much. There’s a few more minor differences between the A7C and A7III(s.o.o.c. colors and AF sensitivity controls), but they could have done more such as full touchscreen UI similar to A7SIII. To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t get a A7III at this point either. In my case, I’m not a working photographer and can standby for the A7IV. I’m going to enjoy my A7SIII in the meantime!

None of which matters when the A7C has a single card slot, 1/4000 Max shutter , no custom buttons, and priced stupidly compared to the A7lll
@GrayGhostDog14 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonColePhotography ... I personally think it comes down to an individual’s use case. This camera should not be considered as targeting the professional, working photographer. Can it be used in working environments? Yes, but it’s going to have its limitations. There are other cameras that when were initially introduced to the market not only had a single card slot, but were priced on par or even higher than the A7III. Why it doesn’t have the same 1/8000 s.s. as the A7III is beyond me, but quite a few cameras out there max out below that speed and that includes all of Sony’s APS-C cameras... and there are many that do not plan on shooting with off-camera flash or on-location. It lost a lot of customizability, for sure, but they wanted to go with this more compact form factor. I’ve always thought Sony was trying to offer as much features as they can in a smaller form factor compared to the other manufacturers, but you see the slight increase in size/weight of their latest products(A7RIV, A9II, and A7SIII)... it appears that they might be going for a different demographic. Technically, the A7C does not cost more than the A7III... Sony recently lowered the price. It sounds like I am defending this camera... yes and no. I believe Sony should have included the updated full touchscreen UI. I think the price should be lower, but I see that situation virtually nixing the A6600($1400... not including Black Friday savings) as a viable option. I actually like the form factor. Depending on the lens, I would much prefer this to lug around for street, travel photography over a larger, professional-type bodied camera. I wouldn’t mind separating my “fun” camera from my “work” camera.

A7c is superior technically to a7iii. Better autofocus in photos and video. Better version of the processor from a7r4, better color science from a7siii, no record time limit in video. In photos better autofocus is important in fashion and sport photography. And some people does use only the screen bigger than the viewfinder anyway and more practical in any angles. I totally disagree with your review. The a7c is superior to a7iii and is good for photos. Compare the a7c in 51200 iso with the nikon z6ii and canon. R6 and the sony a7siii, and you will see the a7c has finest textures reproduction and less noise. If two persons do photos with a7c and a7iii, i am certain that the a7c will win in every condition. Look what Areesz Gandhi Studio can do with a7c, he is a professional photographer, and its photo are stunning. You need talent for photography.

Hum.....someone gave me your video to watch it, because we were discussing about this camera and i must say, that is not a huge deal for me 1/4000, or the lack of buttons, actually i knew this from the very beginning and thats why i bought it. It has many good advantages, and ive shooting for 13 years with 1/4000. I think i got used to deal with the hardware in such a way, increasing to 4 the apperture and maybe a ND filter or whatever, you just play around.... if i really want something specific. At the end, you adapt to the hardware you are using, you learn and you controll at the end the situation, not the camera controlling you. and as professional flamenco photographer in Japan, i must say that this is just a piece of hardware that fits perfectly well for me, maybe not for you, but that´s ok. I begun shooting with analog cameras when i was a kid, you can imagine all the stuff i had to control almost "blind". With the A7c is just about having fun, literally.

Totally enjoy your review from a photographer's perspective. I'm newbie looking to buy either the a7III or a7c. Everybody seems to talk about the C for vlog'ing but nobody talks about it used for photos. Your comment regarding the stop lost on 1/4000 of a second. What about the lower flash sync speed? Is that a big deal too? I was surprised you liked the EVF though. Good points on your rant 😊
@devinhelgeson4 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate knowledge you're bringing that no one else is here on youtube. However not all photographers have the same use case as you. "On location" looks different for others. Some people, like me, stuff a camera in a small back pack and climb a hill on foot or on a bike for 4 hours. When you're in that situation some things are worth the full stop of light, the missing front dial, the lack of 100% photo insurance (2 sd cards). What's worth all of those compromises is the amazing full frame image quality in a smaller and lighter package. That's why I bought an a7c. I just comment to give you a different perspective... For a situation like yours, people should buy an aiii. Hell, even an aii. You put your camera in your car and walk with it on the street. But not everyone is like that. I completely agree that reviewers should be more responsible, but I think that entails saying who it is for, and not that no one should buy it. Does that make sense to you? What are your thoughts? I'm curious because I do understand you clearly have a lot of knowledge. With this proposition do you still think it's a fail?
@BrandonColePhotography4 жыл бұрын
Very good insight and that’s what these comments are for. For views and to talk and that’s great. The one big thing you missed is the price. The A7c is 1798. That is super expensive for a camera with so many short comings. If that’s the case you might as well get the a6400 or even the a6600 with ibis and all and that would be a better investment then the A7c
@devinhelgeson4 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonColePhotography I completely agree it's so expensive and don't even get me started on the lenses for sony full frame. What do you think would be a fair price? I really don’t understand the gripe here. This isn’t aimed at pro-photographers,. It’s an entry level full frame camera aimed at people like me, who were debating whether to get an APSC one for the price and size, but were willing to pay a bit more for the full frame. As for why I’d get this over the A73, this one has better auto focusing, including live tracking on video. It’s also lighter and more compact, which I like on long, multi-day hikes and travelling. If you’re a pro photographer shooting in the studio, then I’m going to guess you’re going to look at the A9 or A7R. It’s ironic that you’re complaint about the reviewers not thinking about real world use, when you’re not doing it, either.

There are some slight differences between the a7C for sure, but essentially it’s the same camera and might be better suited to people who don’t like to attract attention. How many situations do we use 1/8000? Sometimes, but not many. The a7iii has come down in price a lot, and this is aimed more at vloggers rather than photographers. I think for people using as a casual small camera with a small prime lens -- it works. Or for those who want the ease of use of an a7s iii for content creation but don't have the funds -- I think it works. Now -- I would never pay full retail for it, but I don't buy anything brand new so that's neither here nor there. We can agree that it's overpriced. I think retail of 1500 would have been reasonable which would have put it around $1300 or so used. That's a lot of used camera for $1300.
