My painting master was asked about trends, styles and his success. His advice has stayed with me "Don't paint to trend. If you are lucky enough to pick the right one, you'll sell for maybe six months, tops, and then you'll be right back where you started, if you are lucky. Don't develop a "style". You'll end up painting the same thing for twenty years and that's not growth or improvement. Create what you love. It will take longer, but you will find people who love it too and they will stick with you". And I take that advice into whatever I do, especially my little YT channel.

The KZbin algorithm is recommending your older videos to me and I'm totally okay with this. This is one of my favorite videos from you. It deserves more views. When you started talking about how you chose your audience - how you chose me and the rest of people who watched this video - I felt that.

WHAT A GREAT VIDEO. This needed to be said and you did so very eloquently. KZbin has become a myriad of clout chasing and money grabbing and a lot of creators who forget why they truly started. A couple weeks back a young man in high school woodshop downloaded my free plans for hexagon pencil holders and told me he was going to use them to make gifts for his teachers, friends and family. THAT was the moment I knew this is what I want to do. When I had concrete proof I had inspired someone to craft and build something out of their comfort zone. Thank you for this video Roberto! There's a lot of "how to grow your KZbin channel" videos out there. They talk about producing what the audience wants and not necessarily what you want. But then you have a boss dictating everything you do. When you were talking about photography I thought, "yep, Roberto and I have something in common. We can't take someone dictating want we do." It's just too stressful, confusing and stifling. I didn't start KZbin to get an audience, I started KZbin because I thought I had something to give. If I worry about trying to grow my audience, I won't be giving what I started out to give.

Great subject matter on this video Roberto! So many great points... You ask "who am I creating content for?" It's funny because I realized about a month ago that I was creating for me, I wasn't creating anything that really added any value for people coming to watch my content since all I had was Adobe Illustrator Speed art videos. I know there may be some value there but not very much!! 🤔 So I am now focused on creating content that is going to benefit up and coming Graphic Designers and Vector Artists. I've been working in the graphic design field for nearly 20 years. I love creating content - not just videos, but vector illustrations, characters, typographic works... the list goes on. Time to get focused! Thank you.

This has to be one of the most powerful Honest Thoughts videos I've seen from you. Right from the title you were essentially pinpointing my KZbin origin story. I jumped into this community in 2011 because I felt like I didn't have a voice in my town and that no one cared about the things that I loved. I turned to KZbin because I thought 'If people in my town won't listen, there's bound to be someone in the world who will." I can't agree more how people have lost their passion for creating content because they've only sought after other people's validation by creating what's popular even if it's not what they love. Being a small content creator is a fabulous thing! I have freedom to create what I love without stressing over not "making" the view count on a video. The only reason I really want to get big is so the KZbinrs that inspire me to keep going and that I look up to will see me as someone to collaborate with. I'm with you on 'add value to their community and content' train, but I also believe numbers do play a huge factor in that. I've been adding value to two individuals' fan bases for a very long time yet when I propose a collaboration and offer to do the bulk of the work there's still no response.

Sound advice, felt like it's just mirroring my exact internal thoughts, used to draw things i like, then fell into the trap of drawing to get others attention. Saw what i was doing and stopped that, paid more focus on doing what i wanted. Also can resonate with that situation where you are working for someone design wise, suddenly your creativity is no longer in your hands. Having the realities dawn on you feel crippling. Need to give the journey time, racing towards the finish line without understanding what you are getting into is just reckless. Even if you want so much to be successful, delayed gratification.

What I took away was focusing on what we are passionate about. Since we are so new, we should focus on that instead of trying to create videos we "think" people want to hear and see.
@amaracea5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Plus, we all live on the same planet, so as weird as you may be, it’s probable many others are just as weird and that, in fact, the only reason it’s “weird” is because everyone is fitting themselves into social standards that nobody likes but are afraid of being judged. Worse, you do get judged, because people feel if they don’t judge you then they’ll be judged by others who think they agree with your “weirdness.” It is an extremely sad social system and the only way to break it is to create for yourself, not for the masses. In short, we must stop caring what other people think. Judgment is the core of all evil. You can’t actually name a single sin nor trigger (to things like sadness, anger, desire, etc) that can’t be traced back to judgment. Yet we tend to make creative content based entirely around judgment from other people. Something is very wrong with that.
@FreewayFlippers5 жыл бұрын
@@amaracea Completely agree. You can relate fear of being judged to so much. I was afraid to leave my job as a teacher because I was afraid of what my coworkers, families, and friends would think. I was an AWESOME teacher, but it didnt fulfill me as a person. My true passion is helping others go against the grain and flip something "norm" in their life. Whether it is how you live (we live in an RV) where you work (I sell things online) being married without kids. Not having that standard "life" society wants us to live. I actually commend your channel - it is unique and shows me who YOU are. 😀

Roberto you only speak truth!!!!! I was talking with my husband about this same topic this morning over breakfast. My “audience” is the new mama, but I find it so hard to be laser focus on one particular niche. I create content about motherhood and also infertility awareness. I told my husband how frustrated I was because I really want to be laser focus on something, but at the same time, the thought of just restricting myself so much that I can’t talk about anything else in my videos freaks me out. Is there anybody you can recommend that work with creators to help them find their specific niche? Thank you so much for your words in this video. You are always so authentic

Thank u i been saying that. i started KZbin 4 3 reasons 1. Was to build a online business because there is a reward for people who take it seriously in the long run.. 2nd was to share with the world who we are as a family because in my community were well respected and loved by many ,so doing what we already do but just leveraging the platform to reach a broader audience and connect with other families and individuals that are 100% REAL!! 3rd. For my kids self esteem and confidence being on camera getting out of there comfort zone and developing some great skills that will help them grow in life for seeing themselves on TV / online having raving fans my kids friends at s school think we're celebrities and they all support us keep in mind i have 3 kids 1 in daycare and 2 in elementary school.. so we just creating content that people will enjoy and we loving every moment of it. So ya i totally agree with you Roberto we will never down grade ourselves and we have less than 300 subs but i feel like i have 3 milly so no biggie ...👍🏿✌🏿🙏🏿

Roberto, God bless you bro. This is actually the best video I’ve ever seen regarding being a content creator. It’s finally settling in that the quality of subscribers matters so much more than the quantity. Wow. I think everyone needs this amazing reminder that’s it important be our genuine selves, to figure out who we want our audience to be, and to make content that we genuinely love instead of just chasing the algorithm. I needed this reminder and I truly appreciate your honesty and the hard work that you put in to teach and encourage us. Thank you and keep up the amazing work ❤️🙏🏾😘 Fernelle

Thank you for this message, it is really profound especially in this day and age on trying to grow in youtube and everyone telling you you have to hone in on vids that are doing great in watchtime. Even though it is not always the type of video you enjoy making. I am planning new content at the moment and I am really keeping in mind what I think is interesting to talk about, so I will keep motivated and keep having fun

Good point about not really being able to find one's voice if one is chasing attention.

You made a lot of great points in this video. It's tough when your audience is reacting well to the content that you're tired of making. And then when you try to shift to something you are more passionate about, there's backlash. There are videos I haven't made for fear of dislikes or negative comments. But if I continue on the path I'm on, it's only a matter of time before I get burned out and stop uploading all together.

I’m creating for people who want to see the world through a new lens. I believe that people don’t need to go to far off locations or put themselves in danger to have an adventure, but that an adventure can be had right in your own backyard. I create for curious people, to hopefully inspire them to stop and smell the roses, and then consider the little things that call those roses home.

Keep killing it, Roberto! You’re one of the reasons and inspirations behind me getting my KZbin channel off the ground. Working on new content as we speak and trying to “find my voice”.
